Rouge 3

Rouge the Bat, from Sonic X.

Rouge appears in the Sonic X anime series and its comic series published by Archie Comics as an agent for the President and friend of one of his agents, Topaz. She was recruited into GUN at some point after she was transported from Sonic's home world that is in parallel dimension to Earth. She fought in the Chaos Emerald Martial Arts Tournament and during after returning back home, she mainly sided with the heroes on their adventure to defeat the Metarex.

Sonic Prime[]

Rouge is interested in a new shiny object: the Paradox Prism. She has no problem working with Sonic and friends, but she states she usually likes to do things her way. However she is shown to have a genuine friendship with them. Due to the Paradox Prism's incident, Rouge is displaced across different dimensions from the Shatterverse. Her alternate counterparts are: Rebel Rouge from New Yoke City, Prim Rouge from Boscage Maze, and Batten Rouge from No Place.

Archie Comics[]

Rouge the Bat Archie

Rouge the Bat, from Sonic the Hedgehog: The Complete Sonic Comic Encyclopedia.

Rouge appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series. Very much like her video game version, Rouge is an agent of G.U.N. with a fondness of riches, especially rare, beautiful gems, and has often searched for or stolen jewels. She had many run ins with various people on Mobius, such as fighting Bunnie Rabbot to a standstill over a misunderstanding, dated Evil Sonic for a bit before he turned into Scourge, had several run-ins in the past with Fiona Fox and Nic the Weasel, often beating them to rare treasures, and thus has something of a former rivalry with the pair, and forming Team Dark as her game counterpart.

Theme songs[]

The background music for the stage Security Hall (titled "I'm a Spy") in Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle is generally attributed to Rouge, despite technically having no relation to her. Like most characters, Rouge is associated with a genre of music, specifically smooth jazz/bossa nova/fusion with some feminine sighs thrown in (similarly to how Knuckles is associated with the rap genre). It is interesting to note that the background music in her Club Rouge stage from Sonic Battle also has feminine sighing. No other BGM in the game has any form of vocal.

Upon Rouge's introduction in Sonic Adventure 2, many game reviewers commented on her similarity to Knuckles,[10][11] including such critical remarks as "Knuckles with bat wings and breasts",[12] whilst some further criticized her design.[11][12] Her "daring attitude" and narcissism received further comment.[13][14] Rouge appeared on GamerRadar's list of "The Sexy Lady Beasts of Gaming", in which she is described as "proof that voluptuous curves, thigh-boots, sexy eyes and rubber gloves can make any animal in the kingdom an object of lustful perverted desire. No matter how freaky-looking their real-world inspiration might be."[15]

In an official Sonic character poll by Sonic Team, Rouge was voted the tenth most popular character in the series, marking her as the second most popular female character next to Amy Rose.[16]

Rouge has been featured in many advertising campaigns and advertising for the Sonic the Hedgehog series in North America and Japan. At the launch of Sonic Adventure 2, Rouge and a few other characters were featured in a line of plush toys advertising the game, available in claw cranes in Japan.[17][18] Sega in cooperation with McDonald's and Fisher-Price released a series of LCD Sonic-themed Games at McDonald's in 2004 bundled with Happy Meals to promote the North American release of Sonic Heroes. Rouge was featured in the game Amy and Rouge Volleyball in which, "Players are challenged to move Amy from side to side to return Rouge's serves and volleys.".[19] The remaining merchandise of Rouge throughout the 2000s was for Sonic X, including a 5" action figure released by Toy Island.

Great Eastern Entertainment later made 8.5" and 21" plush toys of Rouge in the 2010s. In 2021, Jakks Pacific announced a Rouge the Bat figure for a 2022 release in wave 8 of their line of their 4" articulated Sonic figures. It is the first action figure of her to be released since Toy Island's during their Sonic X line, as Jazwares previously cancelled their planned Rouge figure.

  • Prima's Game Guide for Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) states that there are rumors that Rouge has feelings for both Shadow and Knuckles,[20] although it is unknown how much of this is valid due to the book possessing a large amount of errors and contradictions. It also erroneously says above that in Omega's back history that it was his rampage that unleashed Rouge from Eggman's base.[21]
  • In Sonic Adventure 2 and its re-releases, Rouge's character model features breast physics; that is to say, her chest bounces often when landing, changing direction, etc. This is most easily visible in the brief pause before her intro sequence for multiplayer in the Dreamcast version. The only other game to feature this trait with her has been Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
  • In Sonic Riders, Rouge has blue eye shadow, but her icon on the race results screen appears to be using her Sonic Heroes model, erroneously making her eye shadow pink.
  • Rouge may have been named after the jewel, the Rouge, relating to her jewel obsession. Her name could also come from a type of makeup applied to the cheeks, which is also called blush.
    • Her name is also a pun on the capital of Louisiana, Baton Rouge, due to her first name being Rouge and her being a bat. Her name also means "red" in French, possibly named after Knuckles' color or the fact that red is a color symbolizing love and Rouge is having a flirtatious and romantic attitude.
    • Another possibility is that her name is a play on the word "rogue" (pronounced "rohg"), often used as a synonym for "thief", mirroring how she often steals other peoples’ jewels.
  • Although she told Knuckles at the end of Sonic Adventure 2 that she was done with jewelry, she is still hopelessly obsessed with jewels in later games (unless she meant that she's done with jewelry without reason).
  • Not counting team members in the support class, Rouge has the least team POW moves in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, with only one.
    • Also, Rouge is the only character with an Armor-Piercing move that hits all onscreen enemies instead of targeting one enemy. She is the second member of the Shifter class, and the only Shifter class member in Team Dark (Shadow and Omega are both in the Power class).
  • In Sonic Heroes, while selecting Shadow or Omega to be Team Dark's leader, if you use the first-person camera to look at Rouge, she will occasionally turn her head in the player's direction and wink.
  • Rouge and some other characters have a few locations named after them in Empire City, as seen on the street signs of the level's day time stages in Sonic Unleashed.
  • At one point in Sonic Battle while Rouge was around, Sonic says, "I smell perfume. Maybe Rouge is around.". This might mean that Rouge wears perfume, or Sonic was only making a joke.
  • In both Sonic Battle and Team Sonic Racing, Rouge is revealed to have a mother. She is the first character to mention a mother without appearing, the other being Zomom.
  • After Shadow the Hedgehog, the wings on Rouge's in-game character models are one color instead of two.
  • In Shadow the Hedgehog, Rouge's unitard appears to be a purple/lavender color in game, but her main character artwork for the game has the outfit in its regular black color.
  • To date, Rouge has never appeared in any Sonic game without Knuckles appearing in the same game, cameo or not.
  • In her alternate outfit model in Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, her belly button is shown. However, it is not present when in her Sonic Riders series outfit.
  • Between Sonic Adventure 2 and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, Rouge's fangs appear to be absent.
  • One of Rouge's unused lines ("Pleasure before business!") from Sonic Adventure 2 is used in one episode of Sonic X.
  • Rouge shares some similarities with Morrigan Aensland from the Darkstalkers series, both being flirty bat girls with a heart motif. While some people think Morrigan has lead to Rouge's inspiration, this has not been confirmed.
  • After Sonic Adventure 2, Sega decided to change Rouge's outfit (explaining why she wore something different in Sonic Heroes) to make her look less provocative, but they ultimately decided to change it back as they found the new outfit to be even more provocative than the old one.
  • Rouge can be seen in an early roster mock-up for Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing as a placeholder alongside Vector, Espio, Blaze and Silver.
  • Rouge may be able to speak French, as one of her lines in Sonic Free Riders is "magnifique!" French for "magnificent!" She says this whenever she lands a trick.
  • Rouge is the third female character, following Sally and Amy, to appear in multiple television series, doing so in Sonic X and Sonic Prime.
  • Sonic Dream Team is the first Sonic game in which Rouge appears and Shadow does not.
    • This fact also shortly applied to Sonic Speed Simulator as well, until Shadow eventually debuted in a later update.
  • Rouge is the first and only female character that has ever physically fought against Shadow.
  • In Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Heroes Rouge would extend her arms forward when using Glide or Triangle Dive, similar to Knuckles, but starting in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Rouge instead glides with her arms held back near her sides.
