The Roller Shocker[1] is an enemy that appears in the Sonic Boom series. It is a mass-produced model of Destruction Troops created by Lyric the Last Ancient and a variant of the Roller Recoiler which can create electrified trails.

Appearance[]

The Roller Shockers strongly resemble Roller Recoilers. They consist mainly of a giant light blue eye with a slit-like pupil and green sclera, which has a thin gray and yellow leg connected on each side by a gray disk-shaped joint. Additionally, each leg disk has a small yellow-green glowing cylinder attached to it. On the bottom of their eye, they have several layers of yellow plating which can slide over their eye for protection.

Overview[]

The Roller Shockers were made by Lyric the Last Ancient about a millennium ago to aid with his plans to destroy the earth's lifeforms and conquer it. When Lyric was imprisoned before completing his plan, the Roller Shockers were shut down.[2] However, Lyric left some of them behind to be found as a contingency plan so the finders would set him free to learn the Roller Shockers' secrets.[3] Following Lyric's release in the present, he reactivated and/or reclaimed all his Roller Shockers to have them aid his schemes and battle Team Sonic.

The Roller Shockers are not common enemies, only appearing in the last levels in the game. The player first encounters them in Creeper Gorge, and later in Lyric's Lair. In battle, the Roller Shockers can launch a stationary attack up close by shredding with their moving eyelids, which they signal by glowing yellow just before attacking. Their most potent attack however is their Spin Dash-like maneuver where they surround themselves in a blue aura and launch a rolling dash towards the player three times in a row. Should the playable character try to move away from the Roller Recoiler while it dashes however, it will adjust its direction towards its target until the last moment, so it is best to stay on the move when they launch their dash. Also, a long as they glow with their blue aura, the player can neither damage or faze the Roller Shockers. Additionally, the Roller Shockers leave a temporary electrified trail in their wake when dashing which inflict damage upon touch.

By comparison, the Roller Shockers have more health that enemies like the Swordsman Troopers, but less than the Crusher Brutes, making them moderately tough to beat and especially dangerous since their electric trails can trap a player. When defeated, the Roller Shockers release three Rings and a varying amount of Robot Scrap.

After Team Sonic defeated Lyric, all the Roller Shockers were subsequently scrapped.

Personality[]

The Roller Shockers are essentially mindless and silent drones unwaveringly loyal to Lyric the Last Ancient, having been programmed to obey his every command.[2] Their loyalty is only superficial however, as the Roller Shockers are just soulless machines adhering to their programing, meaning their allegiance can easily shift when someone else takes control of them.

Powers and abilities[]

The Roller Shockers can curl into a ball and then spin forward with a quick dash to crash through opponents, similar to the Spin Dash. As their unique skill, they can make the surface they move across emit electricity, thus electrifying anyone who touches it. They can also temporarily cloak their entire bodies in a blue force field, making them invulnerable to harm.

Trivia[]

  • The Roller Shockers' name was not revealed in the final version of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. However, their name is listed in an unused biography for the game.[1]
