The Rollers Mk. II are a crimson and black incarnation of the standard Rollers. They also have yellow V-shaped ears and cartoonish eyes with black pupils.
Overview[]
In Sonic Mania, and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, the Rollers Mk. II appear exclusively in Mirage Saloon Zone Act 1 (Knuckles' version only) and 2. Like the original Rollers, they will, in gameplay, curl into a ball and attempt to attack the player. Unlike the original Rollers, hitting a Roller Mk. II in ball form with a Spin Attack-related move will not hurt the player. Instead, the Roller Mk. II will bounce off the player and uncurl. Also, unlike the original, this Badnik will actively pursue the player rather than roll forward continuously, turning around if the player goes past them.
In order to defeat these Badniks, the player must use a Spin Attack-related move to bounce into them and make them uncurl, then quickly destroy them with any attack before they curl up again. Alternatively, they can also use Mighty's Hammer Drop to crush the Rollers Mk. II instantly, even if they are rolling. Upon their destruction, they release an Animal.
Trivia[]
A similar, gray-colored Badnik can be found amongst the scrap during the battle against the Big Squeeze in Flying Battery Zone Act 1. Since the Rollers and Rollers Mk. II look identical to each other apart from the color, it is unknown which of these Badniks are referenced.
The Rollers Mk. II's red and yellow color scheme, as well as the animal species it is based on, give it a resemblance to Mighty the Armadillo. This is further emphasized in the Badnik's description in Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia.[1]
Additionally, the sound effect that plays when the Rollers Mk. II initially curl up to attack--as well as their method of attack--is directly taken from Sonic's Drop Dash ability, which was also introduced in Sonic Mania.
