The Rocket Shoes (ロケットシューズ Roketto Shūzu?) is an Item Box power-up that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Available only to Sonic the Hedgehog, obtaining this power-up allows Sonic to fly through midair for a few seconds.
Rocket Shoes are a pair of footwear similar to the Power Sneakers. What makes them special is that they have rocket engines set on their heels. In addition, they can only be used by Sonic the Hedgehog. After opening an Item Box containing the Rocket Shoes, they will be strapped on to Sonic's feet, and he will immediately begin flying around while wild background music can be heard. While using the Rocket Shoes, the player must use to steer Sonic. With it, the player can gain or lose altitude or change direction. However, controlling the Rocket Shoes can be tough as upward rising and descent can be rather quick while turning in the opposite direction can be strenuous.
After using the Rocket Shoes for a short while, they will disappear and Sonic will fall down to the ground. Also, if the player bumps into a hazard, the Rocket Shoes are immediately lost. Also, since Tails cannot use the Rocket Shoes, their Item Boxes are replaced with something else in his playthroughs.
First appearing in Sonic Chaos, Rocket Shoes video monitors can be found in Sonic's playthroughs of Turquoise Hill Zone, Gigalopolis Zone, Sleeping Egg Zone and Mecha Green Hill Zone. Due to the short layout of Sonic Chaos' Acts, it is almost possible for Sonic to fly through the entirety of an Act with the Rocket Shoes. While playing as Tails, monitors with Rocket Shoes will be replaced with Super Ring video monitors.
In addition to the normal Zones, the first Special Stage consists of Sonic flying through the sky with a unique set of Rocket Shoes that do not have a time limit. These Rocket Shoes are needed to reach the Chaos Emerald at the end of the Special Stage before time runs out, collecting Rings and bigger rings worth ten Rings along the way.
Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble
In Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble, Rocket Shoes monitors can be found in Sonic's playthroughs of Great Turquoise Zone and Sunset Park Zone. In this game, Sonic has the ability to perform a mid-air flip attack by pressing / while flying with the Rocket Shoes. When playing as Tails, Rocket Shoes and Jet Board monitors are replaced with the Hyper Heli-Tails monitors, which are Tails' equivalent of the Rocket Shoes.
In Atomic Destroyer Zone Act 3, Sonic will come across a Rocket Shoes monitor at the beginning of the Act that the player has to use to proceed. While flying around with these Rocket Shoes however, Metal Sonic will suddenly start following Sonic and hit him from behind, making the player lose the Rocket Shoes and initiating a duel with Metal Sonic.
