The Rock Drill,[note 1] also known as the Tunnelbot Mk. II,[note 2] is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced Badnik created by Dr. Eggman and used for the first time during the second part of the Angel Island incident.

Appearance[]

The Rock Drill is a large Badnik that resembles the Tunnelbot from Sonic the Hedgehog 3.[1] Most of its metal is either orange of silver. It features four tall, thin drills, with two being in each side. The Rock Drill also has a small, flat head with a small, cyan light.

Game appearances[]

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles[]

In Sonic & Knuckles and the lock-on game Sonic 3 & Knuckles, the Rock Drill appears three times in Lava Reef Zone Act 1, once in Sonic's story and twice in Knuckles' story (depending on if the player takes the upper pathway behind the robot). When the player is on the area the Rock Drill is standing on, it will start drilling the floor, which will make it collapse. The playable character can also hit the Rock Drill with a Spin Attack, though it will not affect it.

Sonic Mania[]

In Sonic Mania, and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, Rock Drills appear again in Lava Reef Zone Act 1.

In gameplay, the player faces off with the Rock Drill in the iron fence area. Once again by drilling at one place, the drone causes the floor to crumble, while falling down to the lava pool. Midway through Act 1, one Rock Drill is seen causing the lava pool to raise, as the player has to escape it, while the Rock Drill once again falls down to the pit.

The boss of Lava Reef Zone Act 1, the Drillerdroid, is an advanced model of the Rock Drill with a heavily-armed head drone and bulkier parts around its drill attachments.

Trivia[]

  • If the player manages to passes through the Rock Drill safely, they will usually find a monitor on the other side.

Notes[]

  1. While not listed in any instruction manuals, the internal files in the PC release of Sonic Mania refers to this enemy as "RockDrill."
  2. The internal files in the PC Sonic Origins release of Sonic 3 & Knuckles refers to this enemy as "GakinMKII," the Japanese name of the Tunnelbot with Mk. II added.
