Rock'n[2] (ロックン[3] Rokkun?) is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced Badnik model created by Dr. Robotnik.

Appearance[]

Rock'ns are disguised as breakable sand blocks found in the Sandopolis Zone. When they rise up, they will protrude a pair of cartoonish black eyes and a robot-like gray lower body with gray and blue legs.

Overview[]

Sonic & Knuckles[]

In Sonic & Knuckles and the lock-on game Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Rock'ns appear as enemies in Sandopolis Zone Act 1 and 2. In gameplay, they are not easily discovered due to their resemblance to the local sand blocks. Rock'ns usually remain stationary, pretending to be a normal rock, until the player approaches them. At that point, the Rock'ns will rise up, revealing their true nature. A while afterwards, they will begin pacing towards the playable character.

Rock'ns do not have any offensive attacks to use against the player, nor can they deal direct damage to the playable characters. However, they can push the playable character into harm's way, such as crushing pillars which unsurprisingly are placed close to them. They can also often be found blocking corridors, slowing the player down. Rock'ns cannot be smashed by Spin Jumping on top of them due to their outer shell protecting them. Instead, the player must use the Spin Dash or Spin Attack on the Rock'ns lower half to defeat them, destroying both the Badnik and their rock disguise with them. Upon their destruction, they will release an Animal and award the player 100 points.

Trivia[]

  • While the name "Rock'n" comes from Japanese material such as Japanese Sonic Jam Official Guide book,[3] game design documents of Sonic the Hedgehog (Didj) confusingly lists this Badnik as "Corkey" alongside its Japanese name,[1] despite the fact that another Badnik with the name Corkey already exists at Launch Base Zone.
