Robotnik's space satellite was a large, egg-shaped orbital laser cannon that Robotnik used to fire a death ray laser beam at the Emerald Hill Zone as part of his grand plan to transform the face of Mobius (a short time after his takeover as dictator). Sonic raced halfway around the planet to stop it, which he did by creating a giant mirror out of beach sand (by using his hyper-speed on it) and then using the mirror to reflect the beam back at the space satellite and destroy it.[1]
The satellite's shape and function bears several similarities to Robotnik's Death Egg satellites, one of which had been destroyed some before[2] and one of which was built some time after.
