The Robot Butterfly[1] (パタバタ[2] Patabata?, lit. “Pata-Bata”), is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, butterfly-based Badnik model created by Dr. Eggman. Robot Butterflies are seen flying around in many places without having any significant attacks.

The Robot Butterflies are based on butterflies. They have pink metallic body with wide eyes, yellow feelers and proboscis. As seen in Sonic the Hedgehog CD and Sonic Runners Adventure, they had round yellow wings, which are either clear or have holes on them in certain cases.

In their debut game in Sonic the Hedgehog CD, this Badnik appears as an enemy, and is referred to as the Robot Butterfly[1] (パタバタ[2] Patabata?, lit. “Pata-Bata”). In this game, player encounters them in Palmtree Panic

In gameplay, Robot Butterflies fly around in a zigzag pattern, so be careful not to hit them on the way up from a Spring, when the playable character is vulnerable.

Robot Butterflies are seen broken down due to age in the Bad Future of Palmtree Panic or sometimes in the present. Damage to them in their degraded state include holes in their wings which causes them to fly slower. Regardless, they can be defeated by a single Spin Jump. Also, like every Badnik in the game, they are powered by Little Planet flower seeds which will pop out of them when they are defeated.

Sonic Lost World

In the Wii U version and PC version of Sonic Lost World, the Robot Butterflies can be found in Desert Ruins Zone 2. At certain points in the Zone, during which Sonic skydives, he must avoid multiple groups of six of these butterfly Badniks flying in circles. These Badniks however, are redesigned with blue wings and orange highlights, two holes in each wing, and a silver metallic body with a visible abdomen. Because Sonic is skydiving, he is unable to attack and therefore must avoid these Badniks instead of destroying them.

Sonic Runners Adventure

In Sonic Runners Adventure, the Robot Butterflies appear as enemies. In this game, they retain their design from Sonic the Hedgehog CD with the holes in their wings, though this does not affect their flight speed. The player encounters them in Green Hill.

In gameplay, the Robot Butterflies slowly fly towards the player. Other simply hover in place. Also, upon their destruction, they release an Animal.

Powers and abilities

Thanks to their wings, the Robot Butterflies are capable of flight.

Sonic the Comic

In the Sonic the Comic series published by Fleetway Editions, the Robot Butterflies are a part of Dr. Robotnik's Badnik army, although they only made a few appearances during the comic's run. Stationed in the Palmtree Panic Zone, the Robot Butterflies got relocated to the Green Hill Zone, where they began destroying the local inferior Badniks until the Seven Badniks brought them under control.

  • Interestingly, this Badnik shares its Japanese name, Pata-Bata, with another Badnik, Hoverby Mk II. The Hoverby Mk II are likely related upgraded models, due to their similar features.
