The Robot Bee[1] (ポービー[2] Pōbī?, lit. “Poh Bee”[note 1]) is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, bee-based Badnik model created by Dr. Eggman.

Based on bees, Robot Bees appear to be upgraded Buzz Bomber models. They have yellow thoraxes with small transparent wings on their back, and black abdomens with a yellow stripe which have either rail cannons or chained maces attached where their stinger would be. They also have black eyes with green sclera, red antennas and yellow mandibles.

Game appearances

Sonic the Hedgehog CD

In their debut in Sonic the Hedgehog CD, this Badnik appears as an enemy and is referred to as Robot Bee[1] (ポービー[2] Pōbī?, lit. “Poh Bee”[note 1]). In this game, they appear in Wacky Workbench and Metallic Madness.

In gameplay. the Robot Bees come in two types, each with a different attack pattern. The first type is found at Wacky Workbench. Similar to the Buzz Bombers, they fly through the air and fire fireballs at the playable character from their stinger when the player gets close. After attacking, they just fly forward. In the Bad Future or sometimes in the Present timeline of the Round, Robot Bees show signs of decay. They also fly slower and are unable to fire fireballs.

The second type of Robot Bees appear in Metallic Madness, which have two maces attached on their abdomens by chains. These Robot Bees come as well in different variants: some may only have one mace while others have two that hang from chains of different lengths. For attack patterns, they fly back and forth while swinging their maces in different directions. The player will take damage by touching the maces, but can pass through their chains without harm. In the Bad Future or sometimes in the Present timeline of the Round, they show no sign of decay, but they fly slower and only have a single mace.

Both types of Robot Bees can be defeated with the Spin Jump. Also, like every Badnik in the game, they are powered by Little Planet flower seeds which will pop out of them after being defeated.

Sonic Mania

In Sonic Mania, and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, the Robot Bees appear as enemies, unnamed in any material. In terms of design, they look exactly like their pristine versions did in Sonic the Hedgehog CD. In these games, they only appear in Metallic Madness Zone. In Encore Mode, the Robot Bees look virtually the same, except they now sport orange scleras.

Only the Robot Bees with maces attached to their their abdomens appear in Sonic Mania. They are also usually found along the Zone's unique pathways in the background. In gameplay, they behave like in their debut game: they fly back and forth while swinging their maces around. Also, when destroying a Robot Bee, it will release an Animal.

  • Robot Bees and Tonbos loosely resemble each other design wise for having similar transparent wings, antennas and different colored eyes despite being based on different insects.
