The Rip Tide is an Item Box power-up that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a Trap Item used primarily to obstruct opposing rivals' path.

Description[]

The Rip Tide's icon takes the form of the Aqua Ring spills water out from its hole. In gameplay, the Rip Tide will send the Aqua Ring to the right of the track, spilled out water which forms as a river.

Overview[]

In gameplay, the Rip Tide can only be obtained at random from Item Boxes by Sinbad the Sailor. As with most other Items, Metal Sonic and Metal Sonic Mach 3.0 can also use the Rip Tide if they use the Steal Item, or Fortune Teller Amy if she uses Lucky Draw or Wall of Cards to steal it from the aforementioned user.

Once obtained, the player can utilize the Rip Tide by pressing its icon on the bottom of the HUD. When used, the Rip TIde will spawn the Aqua Ring some distance ahead of the user's current location. However, it appears to the right of the track, and spills water out, forming a riptide, which covers all of the lanes. If a character step on the riptide, including the user themselves, they will be left floating helplessly in the air temporarily while slowing down momentarily, then they will be lost control and moved two lanes away to the left before they can control back for moments. To avoid the riptide, the playable character must jump over it.
