All of these sections can be skipped altogether if the player chooses, and sometimes it is worth it in order to collect certain power-ups.

Ring Shooters[1] are gimmicks that appear in Sonic & Knuckles and later in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II. They are devices created for taking the playable characters to different sections in the levels via circles of yellow light.

Description

The appearance of Ring Shooters varies between games, but its standard feature is sending the users traveling short distances through midair by making them pass through yellow rings. All the while, the yellow rings will guide the users to a different area.

Game appearances

Sonic & Knuckles

In Sonic & Knuckles and the lock-on game Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, Death Egg Zone features Ring Shooters as Spin Dash launch pads next to a cyan-colored gates with a 3 second timer and high-voltage fuses on side of the gate. After the countdown has gone to zero, the player is launched through a line of yellow rings as Sonic or Tails are on the Spin Attack mode while flying around the yellow electricity rings. The arenas are large, where the player flies, while doing loops around and other swerves until the player will guided to the other side of the arena along with speed. The event is automatic as the player is unable to control the character.

Ring Shooters are usually found on huge open arenas of the zone. All of these sections can be skipped altogether if the player chooses, and sometimes it is worth it in order to collect certain power-ups.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II

Ring Shooters are seen years later at Sky Fortress Zone Act 3 in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II, where they are redesigned as yellow, bizarre-looking cannons with a plastic cover over the top. When Sonic and Tails use the Homing Attack on the Ring Shooter, they jumped in and got launched through yellow rings before depositing them in a cylinder that rotates and dumps them on another Ring Shooter at different section of the zone.
