Rhea Island (レイア島,Reia-tō?) is the fourth Open-Zone area in Sonic Frontiers. Despite being considered a separate island, it is actually located on the same landmass as Kronos Island, and as such, resembles a lush area dotted with ancient ruins.
Rhea Island is a large portion of the same landmass Kronos Island is located on, being on the northside. As such, it aesthetically looks identical to Kronos, with the exception of six black towers which loom over the landscape.
History[]
Sonic Frontiers[]
Upon Sonic the Hedgehog's arrival on Rhea Island, six mysterious towers rose out of the terrain fully active. Tails, still stuck between Cyber Space and reality, rushed to meet Sonic, who was physically exhausted from his rising cyber-corruption. The End subsequently contacted Sonic, instructing him to "silence the six towers" and "tear down the walls between dimensions". Trying to remain positive, Sonic voiced his thanks for the lack of a Titan in the area, and comforted Tails before rushing off to deactivate the towers.
One by one, Sonic deactivated the towers, receiving a vision of the Ancients' actions from thousands of years ago after each deactivation. Through these visions, he witnessed them harnessing the power of the Chaos Emeralds to escape their planet, them fleeing their home planet after its destruction by The End, them being forcibly drawn to Earth by the Master Emerald, their creation of Cyber Space to preserve their memories and ambitions, their creation of the Titans to battle the returning The End, and their final battle with the monster in space.
Along the way, Sonic encountered Sage, who attempted to warn him of his rising levels of the cyber-corruption. With no other way to save his friends, however, Sonic continued onward, much to Sage's interest. Sage contacted Sonic again after his deactivation of the third tower, noting that although she had a degree of respect for him, she expected his fate to be exactly how it was in her simulations.
After deactivating the final Tower, Sonic was teleported off of Rhea and into a painful red void. As Sonic fights the cyber-corruption, his friends start to teleport in, starting with Amy Rose, followed by Knuckles the Echidna, Tails, with Sage and Dr. Eggman in his personal vehicle arriving last. Looking around, they see Sonic affected by the cyber-corruption before it ends and it cuts back to Rhea Island, where Knuckles asks what happened to him, in which Tails replies that he took too much cyber energy.
Suddenly Sage teleports up to Eggman, where she said that he must get back into Cyber-Space, in which Dr. Eggman ended up reacting in shock. Sage explained that he must get back in order to be alive when the End gets out. Suddenly, the End speaks. Afterwards, they revive Sonic, and they and the others ended up teaming up to fight the End. Afterwards, Sonic is teleported to Ouranos Island.
Gameplay[]
Rhea Island stands out among the other islands in Sonic Frontiers in a variety of ways. No guardians or Titans are fought, and no Fishing Spots, collectible items except for Sound Memories (although the HUD interface will still show a counter for Portal Gears and Vault Keys despite the absence of any), or Portals are present. Rather, the player is given the specific task of deactivating six towers, which can be performed by pressing // when nearby a point at their peak. As such, the player has to face a variety of platforming challenges to climb up the towers, specifically 3D platforming, 2D platforming, 3D Rail Grind platforming, 2D Rail Grind platforming, platforming and combat, and at the farthest edge from the arrival spot, Wall Run platforming. After deactivating all the towers, a cutscene will play, after which the player will be automatically transported to Ouranos Island.
Due to Rhea Island not having any Challenges, it will automatically be marked as 100% mapped once the player enters it.
Despite featuring its own distinct name, Rhea Island is essentually just the other half of Kronos Island, something made evident by the fact that not only both islands share the same model, but also both islands share the same identical map (albeit, some portions are removed from both maps) and the island itself can be reached via Kronos Island (and vice versa) by doing either the "Hedgehog Space Program" to surpass the invisible barrier.
According to director Morio Kishimoto, Kronos, Rhea, and Ouranos Island were originally planned as one big open Zone, but the islands were split due to feedback from playtesters, who claimed the combined island was too big and boring.[1]
If the player decides to go to the shoeprint isle, via boosting off of the first tower or Spin Dash, there is a Jump Panel located there. The isle is otherwise empty.
Interestingly, there is a smaller isle located further, unless if the player performs the "Hit and Run" exploit from the enemy-filled tower, the tiny isle is unreachable by any other means. That isle is also empty, aside from a Spring that sends the player towards through many Dash Rings back to the shoeprint isle. Prior to version 1.3.0, there was litterally nothing in the tiny isle.
This is the only island to not have any Guardians or Titans.
The music used on Rhea Island was originally intended to play during an unknown boss.[2]
Rhea Island is the only Island that lacks seven movements of background music. Ouranos Island originally lacked seven movements, but The Final Horizon adds five more movements of music in addition to the base game's two.
