Reversed Gravity is a gimmick seen in several 2D Sonic games beginning with Sonic & Knuckles.  In certain zones, usually a final zone set in outer space, Sonic can walk on the ceiling in some areas.

Game appearances

Sonic & Knuckles

Much of Act 2 of Death Egg Zone involves walking on the ceiling.  There are three ways to reverse gravity: hitting a Switch on the ground, running through an antigravity tunnel, or taking a ride in a High-speed elevator.

Sonic Advance

In Cosmic Angel Zone, gravity sometimes switches at will. Using the guided cannon systems can also switch gravity.

Sonic Advance 2

Egg Utopia has sections where the player can walk on the ceiling. It is also present in the Egg Frog boss fight where the player can manually reverse gravity to help attack the boss or evade its attacks.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II

In Death Egg MK.II Zone, Sonic switches from floor to ceiling very rapidly and randomly. While gravity is reversed, the crouch and look up commands are also reversed, meaning the player has to press down to look upwards and up to crouch. The final boss takes place in an antigravity chamber with three concentric electrified rings.
