The Resistance[2] is a group that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing. Commandeered by Knuckles the Echidna, it is a rag-tag freedom fighting organization that was created to oppose the Eggman Empire.

History

The War

The Resistance was formed by Sonic's friends and allies to reclaim the world, which Dr. Eggman conquered most of after capturing Sonic.[3] Knuckles the Echidna ultimately became the Resistance's commander, although it was Amy Rose who kept the group organized.[4] Shortly after the War with Eggman began, the Resistance received the ciphers for the Wisps' language from Tails (who went solo afterward). With the ciphers, the Resistance enlisted the aid of the Wisps, whom they would send into enemy territories for when the Resistance's troops arrived so the soldiers could pick them up and use them.[5]

At various points during the war, Resistance units would report being aided by a mysterious soldier who came to be known as the "legendary Guardian Angel". Although she was able to turn the tide of battle, she never joined the Resistance's army.[6]

After warring with the Eggman Empire for six months, the Resistance freed Sonic, and with his help and new allies, they were able to defeat Eggman (who disappeared in the aftermath) and break the Eggman Empire's control over the world.[2][3]

After the war, many Resistance members left the group, including Sonic. Those that remained set out to clean up after the war.[4] With this shift in focus, Knuckles' new duties as commander came to involve things like scheduling and inventory, stuff that did not sit well with him.[5] Meanwhile, the task of rebuilding the world proved more monumental than expected: not only were the leftover Badniks from Eggman's global army everywhere, but they were now randomly attacking civilians since Eggman was no longer there to lead them. Seeking to finish the fight, the Resistance began working from a centralized, organized position in order to be more effective while combating the rogue Badnik gangs.[4]

Fallout

After hearing about Sonic's successful dealings with the Badnik gangs, who were becoming organized and dangerous, Amy went to recruit him for the Resistance's mission. After meeting him in a town where they battled side by side to save it from Badniks however, Sonic, who was on his own Badnik-related mission, turned down Amy's invitation. Accepting Sonic's choice, Amy returned to the Resistance.[4] Meanwhile, Knuckles went to investigate why the shipment of Wispons from another town had dried up, eventually receiving help from Sonic along the way. Together, the two heroes stopped the mercenary duo, Rough and Tumble, who had been hording the Wispons for themselves.[5]

The Fate of Dr. Eggman

Meeting with Sonic and Tails in Resistance HQ, Knuckles and Amy learned from Sonic that Neo Metal Sonic was the ringleader behind the recent organized Badnik attacks. As it turned out, the robot had taken over as leader of the Eggman Empire and was currently trying to conquer the world for Dr. Eggman with an unknown plan. In an effort to undermine Neo Metal Sonic's scheme, Knuckles and Amy decided to help Sonic and Tails search for any old plans that could tell what Neo Metal Sonic was up to. Amy in particular put out a call to all Resistance members to gather additional help for the search.[7] It was not long after that Sonic and Silver discovered Neo Metal Sonic's plans, prompting them to contact Resistance HQ and tell Knuckles and Amy to call in everyone to stop Neo Metal Sonic's plans.[6]

The Battle for Angel Island

Gathering their strongest allies, the Resistance brought them all to a meeting in Resistance HQ. There, they revealed that Neo Metal Sonic had taken over Angel Island and turned it into a flying fortress. To make matters worse, Neo had also secured the Master Emerald for himself on the island. With their goal being to liberate Angel Island, Amy came up with a strategy after some internal discussions: team three (Sonic and Knuckles) would confront Neo and secure the Master Emerald while team one (Blaze) and team two (everyone else) focused on breaking the Egg Fleet's control over the island. On the way to Angel Island however, the heroes' battleship came under fire from the Egg Fleet. Fortunately, everyone got off the ship before it crashed. While team two began their mission, Blaze became Burning Blaze and began her attack on the Egg Fleet. Meanwhile, team three confronted Neo Metal Sonic inside his fortress on the island. Choosing to focus on team three, Neo used the Master Emerald to become Super Neo Metal Sonic.[8]

While Sonic and Knuckles fought Super Neo Metal Sonic, the Resistance and their allies focused on removing the two wing units attached to Angel Island's shoreline. However, they were unable to make much progress, prompting Tails to try a different approach. Meanwhile, Burning Blaze managed to destroy the island's left wing unit, although it forced her to de-transform. In the meantime, Tails and Silver took control of an Egg Fleet battleship, which they used to destroy Angel Island's last wing unit. The Resistance and their allies subsequently regrouped onboard the battleship Tails had hijacked. At the same time, Shadow, who had left on his own, came to Sonic and Knuckles' rescue and forced Super Neo Metal Sonic to de-transform. However, Neo Metal Sonic managed to copy Shadow's biodata while Shadow attacked him, which he used in conjunction with Sonic's biodata (which he already had) and the Master Emerald to transform into an even bigger threat: Master Overlord.[9]

Master Overlord proceeded to capture Sonic, Knuckles and Shadow after fighting them briefly, and took them towards the battleship the Resistance and their allies were on so the trio could watch him destroy their friends. It was then that Sonic came up with a plan: if they could drive Master Overlord closer to Angel Island and rip the Master Emerald out of him, they could deprive the robot of his power source and save the island before it could crash due to the absence of the Master Emerald. The trio would escape when the battleship opened fire on Master Overlord, and Knuckles relayed Sonic's plan to their allies while trying to free the Master Emerald. Meanwhile, Sonic and Shadow went after Master Overlord's wings. Eventually, the Resistance and its allies joined the fray thanks to an opening provided by Sonic, and together they forced Master Overlord towards Angel Island. During the battle, the heroes got shaken off Master Overlord, but were rescued by Silver with his psychokinesis. Knuckles subsequently got the Master Emerald away from Master Overlord after Tails rammed the battleship into the robot, and brought it back to Angel Island, returning the island to the sky while Master Overlord powered down to normal. With the battle over, the Resistance and their allies all landed safely on Angel Island.[10]

As Knuckles felt he could not leave the Master Emerald again and found no need for the Resistance anymore, he decided to disband the organization. This annoyed Amy as she had found enough materials from the Egg Fleet battleship to help with reconstruction efforts.[11]

Weapons and technology

  • Battleships: The Resistance has its own air fleet that is composed of battleships, each bristling with laser guns. The battleships themselves boast blue and white spaceship-like designs.[8]
  • Wispon: The primary weapon utilized by the Resistance's infantry. They are special weapons designed to utilize the power from Wisps without causing the user to undergo a transformation in the process.

Tactics

During the War, the Resistance would send Wisps into enemy areas in Deployment Pods so they could be picked up by the Resistance's troops when they could enter said areas.[5]
