The Regulator[1] (調整器[2] Chōseiki?) is an object that appears in the Sonic Prime television series. It was a special device invented by Tails Nine which regulated the energy of the Paradox Prism that was inside Sonic.

Description[]

The Regulator is a circular metal device with two triangular points, two of which are mounted on the heels of Sonic's shoes and two on the back of his gloves. At first, they look like regular metal rings, but once they have interacted with Sonic and the Prism Energy, the inner ring glows sky blue (with the exception of attire that Sonic wears whenever he is in The Grim, where the inner ring glows a light purple) with energy and seems to suction onto his gear. The Regulators affect his gloves and Shoes differently in different Shatterspaces.

Usage[]

The devices serve several functions, such as a compass of sorts, making Sonic's shoes glow with a colorful and glitchy aura with a pulsing noise, signaling that a Prism Shard is within a certain range. This has come in handy when Sonic and his crew have tried to find the different Prism Shards throughout each Shatterspace. The devices also regulate the energy of the Paradox Prism, transforming Sonic's apparel based on the current Shatterspace, and allowing him to run freely without the energy causing him to slip. Upon seeing them react to Prism Energy, Shadow fought Sonic to confiscate them before returning to the Void and tried to enter Boscage Maze. After being saved by Sonic, who took them back, he realized the Regulators can't help him access Shatterspaces. The devices can also be used as communicators, as Nine re-programmed them to be able to communicate with Sonic through other Shatterspaces.[3] When Sonic sacrificed himself to fully restore the Paradox Prism, the Regulators began to overload as the Prism Energy was drained from his body, causing his shoes and gloves to rapidly shift between their Shatterspace-specific Regulator Upgrades. The devices finally shattered under the strain once the extraction process was complete.

Abilities[]

Every upgrade of Sonic's shoes and gloves come with special abilities (with the exception of New Yoke City and Ghost Hill):

  • In Boscage Maze, Sonic's gloves are given four cyan claws and there are also two on both of his shoes. They can be used for climbing, as shown when Sonic has used the claws before to climb trees. They're officially called the "Boscage Blades".
  • In No Place, Sonic's shoes are given the ability to hover and run over water. They're officially called the "Hovercraft Kicks".
  • In The Grim, Sonic's shoes and gloves are given the ability to create hexagonal energy platforms, allowing him to run through the air and suspend himself midair through the soles. His gloves can project shields that can withstand energy blasts from Nine's Prism Energy attacks.

Trivia[]

  • The No Place shoes share the same ability as the hover shoes made by Chris in the Sonic X anime series.
  • In a YouTube Short by Netflix After School, two of Sonic's Regulator Upgrades are given names. The Boscage Maze Upgrade is called "Boscage Blades" and the No Place Upgrade is called "Hovercraft Kicks".
  • Sonic's Regulator Upgrade in The Grim is the only one that doesn't have a specific name.
