The sky's the limit, thanks to Red Burst!

Tails in the DS version of Sonic Colors.

The Red Burst (レッド・バースト Reddo bāsuto?) is a transformation used by Sonic the Hedgehog in the DS version of Sonic Colors, the 3DS version of Sonic Generations, and the 3DS version of Sonic Lost World. It is the Color Power Sonic gains when absorbing a Red Wisp and its Hyper-go-on. While in this form, Sonic can turn himself into a living fireball.

Physical Appearance

As the Red Burst, Sonic's entire body turns into a large version of his own head, which is not much larger than Sonic's full height, that is covered entirely in red skin. However, the version of Sonic's head that he turns into has nearly no facial features, such as Sonic's muzzle, ears or nose, except for his eyes, which have lost their pupils and have turned pale yellow. Also, on the back of the Red Burst, Sonic's quills have taken the shape of flames, while he ears have become slightly curved. He also gains a stubby curved horn on his forehead. The Red Burst is also constantly giving off an aura of flames.

Powers and Abilities

As the Red Burst, Sonic obtains pyrokinetic abilities that allows him to form a shield of flames around him that will burn everything it comes into contact with intensely, as if he was a living fireball.

As an offset of the Red Burst's pyrokinesis, Sonic can in this form also create explosions of fire by making himself combust into flames without harming himself, allowing him to shoot himself higher into the air. The Red Burst is likewise also able to build up charges of combustion, allowing Sonic to not only shoot himself higher into the air, but also trigger large-scale and powerful explosions of fire that destroys nearly anything within its range.

The Red Burst's weakness is that this form can only be maintained for a short time, before Sonic will revert back to normal, and requires more Hyper-go-on from Red Wisps to be maintained.

Gameplay

In gameplay, the player can only use the Red Burst while Sonic is in possession of a Red Wisp. Transforming into the Red Burst will cause the energy Gauge to start depleting, and once it runs out, Sonic will revert back to normal.

When transformed into the Red Burst, any enemy the player makes contact with during the Acts will instantly be destroyed, and any weaker obstacles will break down.

When using the Red Burst to jump, the Red Burst will give off a small explosion. Then, by pressing the jump button during a jump, the player can perform a new jump in midair, allowing the player to jump and ascend multiple times in the air, similar to Scale. This allowing the player to make a near-infinite chain of jumps, until the energy Gauge runs out.

By holding down the jump button, the Red Burst can unleash explosions. The longer the jump button is charged up, the larger the explosion will be, allowing bigger jumps and more offensive explosions. While holding down the jump button, the Red Burst's descend through midair is slowed down. When the charge is at maximum, the explosions released by the Red Burst will destroy all enemies, traps and obstacles on the game screens and even open up things such as Wisp Capsules and Item Boxes.

Unlike other known Color Powers, the Red Burst's energy Gauge can be restored by a method outside of grabbing another Wisp Capsule, namely by running into fire.

Sonic Colors

In the DS version of Sonic Colors the Red Burst is the first Color Power introduced in the game (not including the White Wisps), and is unlocked in Sweet Mountain.

While as the Red Burst, the player cannot lose a life due to damage. Hitting damaging obstacles, such as spikes, or taking damage from bigger enemies, such as bosses, will still cause the player to lose Rings, but the player cannot be killed due to damage and lose a life while as the Red Burst, even if the player does not have any Rings at all. While as the Red Burst, the player will also automatically move forward in the direction the player faces, even if the player stood still to begin with.

Besides direct gameplay, the Red Burst can also be used for certain gimmicks in the game, like standing as the Red Burst in hot air balloons will cause the balloon to ascend, landing in the passenger car on a Ferris wheels as the Red Burst will ignite them and launch the player forward, and landing in popcorn cannons as the Red Burst will shoot the player out.

The Red Burst is activated by the player by pressing the X button, while the player's directions are controlled by control pad. To jump, the player has to press the A/B/X/Y button, and to build up jumps/explosions the player has to hold down the A/B/X/Y button.

Sonic Generations

In the 3DS version of Sonic Generations, only Classic Sonic can transform into the Red Burst, as only his Act has Red Wisps in it. In this game, the Red Burst retains the same properties it had in Sonic Colors.

To activate the Red Burst, the player has to press the X button, with its directions controlled by control pad. To jump, the player has to press the X button, and to build up jumps/explosions, the player has to hold down the X button.

Sonic Lost World

The Red Wisp and it's color power, the Red Burst, are set to make a reappearance in the 3DS version of upcoming game Sonic Lost World. Unlike it's previous appearances, it will be used in 3D stages.
