The Rainbow Blast's icon takes the form of two six-colored and sparkling rainbow arches with a white cloud at one end. In gameplay, this power-up becomes a forward-moving white cloud that leaves a five-colored rainbow trail in its wake.
In gameplay, the Rainbow Blast can only be obtained at random from Item Boxes by Unicorn Cream. As with most other Items, Metal Sonic can also use the Rainbow Blast if he uses the Steal Item to steal it from the aforementioned user.
Once obtained, the player can utilize the Rainbow Blast by pressing its icon on the bottom of the HUD. When used, the user sets loose the Rainbow Blast which will travel down the lane it was deployed on in front of the user until it hits either a rival character or obstacle, or it wears off. Rival characters that make contact with the Rainbow Blast will take damage, causing them to lose Rings and slow down momentarily. To avoid the Rainbow Blast, the playable character has to either step out of its lane or jump over it.
The Rainbow Bast can also be upgraded by leveling the user up to level 6 and 12 respectively. When the user is upgraded to level 6, the player increases the width of the Rainbow Blast across multiple adjacent lanes when deployed, and when the user is upgraded to level 12, the Rainbow Blast deals more damage.
