Would you like some cake? I hear raccoons have the cleanest mouths of any animal that routinely eats garbage.

Tom Wachowski, Sonic the Hedgehog (film)

Raccoons (referred to as trash pandas[1] by Tom) are creatures that appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog film series. They are small, non-anthropomorphic mammals that populate the forest and cities around the Earth. They are known for being infamous nuisances to Tom Wachowski, whom they have gone on heists in his trash.

Description[]

Anatomy[]

They are small, furry mammals with a black and white fur pattern and a stripe, fluffy tail.

Characteristics and culture[]

Raccoons are wildlife scavengers. They live in forests around planet Earth and can be found in groups gathering food. In the film series, they appeared in Green Hills, Montana.

As wildlife creatures, raccoons don't have the ability to expand on their pre-existing culture. The species’ potential for growth is stunted by their body structure and limited vocal capabilities to communicate with each other and inability with other organic species that use languages like humans, otherworldly echidnas, etc. This limitation prohibits raccoons from forming a variety of sophisticated relationships with other beings.

As mentioned by Tom Wachowski, raccoons maintain their health and sanitary, despite their activities to rummage through garbage when looking for food.

Powers and abilities[]

Physically, raccoons aren't at all strong compared to a human, let alone a Badnik. They are decently fast to run away when approached by humans and their smaller bodies could help hide themselves in a forest environment.

Ability-wise, their bodies contain senses that allow them roam the forests at night and their smell can locate potential food from a distance.

History[]

Past[]

I'm kidding. I'm just going to use it to scare em... possibly to death.

Presumably, the raccoon species have a similar origin as those in the real world outside of the film series. In context to the first film, this species had been constantly getting on Tom's nerves by rummaging through his trash, to the point he wanted to use a tranquilizer for bears on them.

Film series[]

Sonic the Hedgehog[]

In the beginning of the film, the raccoons were shown rummaging through trash when Tom was arriving home from work. The behavior annoyed him and later he vented that frustration to his wife Maddie, a veterinarian, who was understanding while not condoning anything too reactionary. When Tom was alerted to someone breaking into his garage, his mind immediately thought of the raccoons while Sonic the Hedgehog was looking for an isolated place to use his Rings.

Later, Sonic was hiding in the house from Doctor Robotnik's Badniks when a raccoon actually broke into Tom's home through the doggy door and made its way to Tom's defenseless cake. As Tom was keeping him busy at the front door, it caused a sound that alerted Dr. Robotnik. The doctor barged passed Tom fully expecting to find Sonic in the kitchen only to find the raccoon instead. Tom smugly felt like he got one over on the doctor as Robotnik stood there dejected. Dr. Robotnik was about to leave Tom alone and search somewhere else until he spotted one of Sonic's quills.

The raccoon made its escape back outside through the pet door before a fight broke out.

Comics[]

Tom thinks the raccoons have returned, from Sonic the Hedgehog: The Adventures of Sonic & Donut Lord.

Raccoons are briefly mentioned by Tom in the comic adaption of the Sonic the Hedgehog (film), Sonic the Hedgehog: The Adventures of Sonic & Donut Lord.

Like in the film, Tom thought raccoons were breaking into his garage when he heard Sonic entering in. However, Tom's reaction is portrayed differently between mediums. In the comic, he nonchalantly implies raccoons have entered into his garage before, and in the film, Tom genuinely reacted in bewilderment at the thought of the raccoons breaking in.

Trivia[]

  • The film's writing of the conflict between Tom and the raccoons is presented as a parallel to the conflict between Robotnik and Sonic. Tom at the beginning is an ambitious cop who dreams of achieving greater things while being pestered by hungry, wild-life creatures in his trash to the point he was joking about exterminating them,[2] to being accepting of a raccoon eating his cake when dealing with a bigger threat, Robotnik.
  • A crew member's (Animal handler) foot could be seen in the background of the 'trash cans' scene ready to catch one of the raccoons.
