Quills are objects that appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog film series produced by Paramount Pictures and its spin-offs. They are sharp spines found in Sonic, Knuckles, and Shadow that contain and are immense sources of power, utilized by various factions.

Description[]

The quills of Sonic, Knuckles and Shadow are parts of their natural physiology, and are highly sought after sources of power.

They appear to roughly be about 12 inches in length, and occasionally crackle with bioelectric energy. When not crackling with energy, they glow with a natural bioluminescence, akin to glowsticks, which is made more apparent and obvious in low light conditions.

Capabilities[]

A single quill holds an unlimited source of energy (which Willoughby equates to a thermo-nuclear weapon) that can power various mechanical devices, ranging from vehicles to weapons. Additionally, if an external source of power empowers the owner of the quill, the energy also affects the quill even when separated from the owner (best seen when Sonic goes Super, and one of his quills held by Ivo Robotnik changes to a gold color, albeit after a significant time delay, as it was only shown changing once Sonic was flying towards the ARK, not the moment he went super).

Trivia[]

  • When held by Ivo and The Buyer in their containment tubes, the quills resemble the Chaos Drives.
  • It is unknown if other echidnas and hedgehogs, such as Pachacamac and Amy Rose, have quills that contain chaos energy.
  • It is also currently unknown whether Tails's fur has the same properties, as he can also manipulate chaos energy.
  • As revealed by Jeff Fowler for Sonic 3, the chaos energy contained within the quills has a revitalizing effect on living beings, being able to keep them alive by slowly regressing their body's age, though it apparently only works when done in a manner similar to ingestion (as Gerald Robotnik, at 110 years old, still maintains his exuberance and somewhat youthful look by regularly licking the Quill he acquired from Shadow).
  • At the end of Sonic 3, Ivo uses Super Sonic's quill to kill his grandfather by zapping him in the rear and sending him into the ARK's reactor; however, Gerald reacted as though he were actually attacked and thrown rather than merely zapped (as seen when he leaped far more than what a normal human would when hit from behind). It is unknown if this is a natural ability of the quills, or if said thing is only possible when the quill is empowered and supercharged.
  • For unknown reasons, the poster of Gerald holding Shadow's quill depicts it as a solid red color, yet in the film it appears dual-colored black and red.
  • As stated by Willoughby, Sonic and Knuckles shed quills every time they go out for a jog. This is also proven in the first Sonic movie where Tom finds one of Sonic's quills on the side of the road after he runs in front of Tom's car for fun.
