The Punch Attack (パンチ攻撃 Panchi kōgeki?), also known as the Combo Attack or simply the Punch (パンチ Panchi?), is a move that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series It is one of the signature attacks of Knuckles the Echidna, though others have also used it over time. It is a basic triple punch combo the user delivers to their opponents.

Description[]

When using the Punch Attack, the user stands firmly on the ground where they punch the enemy in front with their fists up to three times in a successive combo attack.

Game appearances[]

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles[]

Knuckles is first seen using a punch in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. In Launch Base Zone, he punches the Egg Mobile in an effort to block the player's progress, only for the foundation he is standing on to give in. In Sonic & Knuckles and the lock-on game, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Knuckles uses a quick death-dealing punch at the showdown of Hidden Palace Zone when Sonic or Tails is too close to him on the ground. It also appears as a idle animation that Knuckles does when playing as him.

Tails Adventure[]

In Tails Adventure, the Punch can be used by Tails when the Knuckles item is equipped. To use the move, the player must press 1. The player can perform multiple punches by repeatedly pressing 1.

Sonic Adventure[]

In Sonic Adventure and its enhanced port Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, the Punch Attack made its return. In this game, it is one of Knuckles' standard attacks. Its performance in gameplay is as follows:

  1. Knuckles punches with his right fist and sends out a purple pulse.
  2. Knuckles follows up with a punch with his left fist and sends out a purple pulse.
  3. Knuckles finishes with a strong punch with his right fist while charging forward. The force from it forms a large red energy field around him and leaves a red trail. This is called the Dash Punch.

To perform the Punch Attack in gameplay, the player has to press DreamcastB/X Button Dreamcast // SNNBGAMECUBEDISCO/Gamecube X Button. To execute the Punch Attack as a combo, the player has to press DreamcastB/X Button Dreamcast // SNNBGAMECUBEDISCO/Gamecube X Button up to three times in succession. '

Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure, Knuckles uses the Punch Attack during the boss battle against him. This version of the move is similar to the one from the boss battle against Knuckles in Sonic & Knuckles.

Sonic Shuffle[]

In Sonic Shuffle, Knuckles uses the Punch Attack as his basic attack. When using two cards at once, he may use a Dash Punch Attack (ダッシュパンチ攻撃 Dasshu Panchi Kōgeki?).

Sonic Adventure 2[]

In Sonic Adventure 2 and its enhanced port, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, the move returned as Knuckles' standard attack, where it is called Punch[1] on the Dreamcast and the Punch Attack[2] on the GameCube. Tikal and Chaos can also perform it in the games' two-player mode, with Chaos' version having further reach in his stretchy limbs. The Punch Attack's performance in gameplay is as follows:

  1. The users punch with their right fist while putting a little body weight into the strike.
  2. The users follow up with a more reckless punch with their left fist while putting a little body weight into the strike.
  3. The users finishes with a jump into the air while delivering a twisting uppercut with their left fist. This is called the Tornado Claw. If running at high speeds, instead of a uppercut, Knuckles will do an attack resembling the Spiral Attack.

To perform the Punch Attack in gameplay, the player has to press DreamcastB/SNNBGAMECUBEDISCO. To execute the Punch Attack as a combo, the player has to press DreamcastB/SNNBGAMECUBEDISCO up to three times in succession. In the game, Knuckles' Punch Attack can be enhanced with the Hammer Gloves, allowing him to break Steel Containers.

Sonic Advance[]

In Sonic Advance, the Punch Attack returned as one of Knuckles' attacks. Its performance in gameplay is as follows:

  1. Knuckles delivers a quick right cross while standing firm.
  2. Knuckles takes a step forward as he follows up with a quick left cross.
  3. Knuckles finishes the combination with a fiery high-rising uppercut, similar to the Spiral Upper.

To perform the Punch Attack in gameplay, the player has to press GameboyB. To execute the Punch Attack as a combo, the player has to press GameboyB up to three times in succession.

Shadow the Hedgehog[]

In Shadow the Hedgehog, Shadow is able to use the Punch Attack, referred to here as Punch. Its performance in gameplay is as follows:

  1. Shadow delivers a quick right cross whilst standing firm.
  2. Shadow then steps forward slightly as he follows up with a quick left cross.
  3. To finish the combination, Shadow performs a fast, rising somersault kick.

To perform the Punch in gameplay, the player has to press SNNBGAMECUBEDISCO/Square/XboxX up to three times in succession when Shadow is not equipped with a weapon. Additionally, some of Shadow's allies can perform Punch when controlled by another player in the Nintendo GameCube/PlayStation 2 version of the game. Like Shadow, the player can perform Punch by pressing SNNBGAMECUBEDISCO/Square. Characters who can use Punch are:

In the game's multiplayer mode, two of the playable Shadow Androids, which appear at the top of the character select screen, use Shadow's standard move-set, and can therefore also use Punch.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), the move returned once again as one of Knuckles' attacks, where it is referred to as the Punch. Its performance in gameplay is as follows:

  1. Heat Knuckle[3] (ヒートナックル Hītonakkuru?): Knuckles delivers a full-force strike with his right fist.
  2. Back Claw[3] (バックブロー Bakkuburō?, lit. "Back Blow"): Knuckles follows up with a quick spin to build up momentum and strikes with his right fist.
  3. Stone Breaker Punch[3] (岩石割パンチ Ganseki Wari Panchi?, lit. "Rock Splitter Punch"): Knuckles finishes by jumping into the air and punches into the ground with his right fist, which sends out a delayed red shock-wave.

To perform the Punch in gameplay, the player must press XboxX/Square. To execute the Punch as a combo, the player has to press XboxX/Square up to three times in succession.

Sonic Frontiers[]

Knuckles' uppercut finisher, from Sonic Frontiers.

In Sonic Frontiers: The Final Horizon, the move returns as one of Knuckles' attacks, referred to as the Combo Attack[4] (?). The move costs 5 Skill Points on Knuckles' Skill tree. Its performance in gameplay is as follows:

  1. Knuckles will swing with his right fist to the left, allowing the momentum to carrying him forward.
  2. Knuckles will swing with his left fist to his right, moving slightly forward.
  3. Knuckles will perform an uppercut with his left fist, sending him into the air.

When executing the Combo Attack, each punch will bathe Knuckles' fist in a fiery red aura. To perform the Combo Attack in gameplay the player must press XboxX/Square while on the ground or the air. To execute the Combo Attack as a combo, the player has to press XboxX/Square up to three times in succession while on the ground or the air.

Prior to 1.41 update, if the player cancels the last hit with a glide or a parry and follows it up with another Combo Attack, the player can gain more height from the attack, which allowed unlimited height to be gained. In the current version, consecutive follow-ups of aerial Combo Attack stalls Knuckles less often, making it less effective of gaining significant height.

Sonic Superstars[]

In Sonic Superstars the Punch is Knuckles' Extra ability when using the grey Chaos Emerald's Emerald Power. When using the Punch, Knuckles jabs with his right fist, sending out a shockwave of white energy. To perform the Punch, the player must press XboxX while on the ground or in the air while the grey Emerald Power is active.

Double Punch[]

The Double Punch is a quick one-two jab Knuckles delivers to his opponent. This move first appeared in Sonic Advance 2.

Spiral Attack[]

The Spiral Attack is basically the Double Punch performed while Knuckles is in Boost Mode. It first appeared in Sonic Advance 2.

Spiral Upper[]

The Spiral Upper is a spinning uppercut Knuckles delivers to the enemy above him. This move first appeared in Sonic Adventure 2.
