Pumpkin Hill (パンプキンヒル Panpukin Hiru?) is the sixth stage of the Hero story in Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, and is playable as Knuckles the Echidna.
Description[]
Pumpkin Hill is a level with a Halloween-theme and it occurs during twilight. There are many pumpkins and Boos that appear with no warning to surprise the player.
Pumpkin Hill has three mountains:
- Pumpkin: An area dominated by various types of pumpkin and fire-breathing mechanized skulls. There is an Ancient Ruin at the summit that opens up a new area.
- Church: A mountain with a blue and lilac church at the summit. It has many tombstones in front of it, mimicking a cemetery. A dangerous Boo can be found here and it will follow the player in order to inflict damage.
- Ghost Train: A mountain with a turntable directing a Ghost Train. It leads to a Pumpkin Head Mountain with a trail of Balloons. The area features many different trains on top of a hill with many rails and even a turntable. The hill also has a few doors and cages, one of which has Big the Cat in it for unknown reasons.
Story[]
With Sonic rushing to save Tails and Amy, Knuckles finds himself in a mountainous region littered with pumpkins while on the hunt for the pieces of the Master Emerald.
Gameplay[]
The goal of this stage is to find three Emerald Shards. Standby rockets allow the player to travel through the level with ease, though gliding is a simplistic method of navigation as well. G.U.N. robots appear to attack the player throughout the level, with the goal of ensuring that the player does not succeed at their mission.
Overview[]
1st Mission: Find 3 pieces of the Master Emerald![]
This mission is simple, as Knuckles has to find the Master Emerald shards around Pumpkin Hill. Knuckles will need the Shovel Claw, as an Emerald Shard will, most likely, be hidden underground. The shards can also be found on the three main mountains or on some of the large, hoodoo-like pumpkin structures around the perimeter of the stage.
2nd Mission: Collect 100 rings![]
This mission is very simple now that Knuckles has the Shovel Claw. The player can simply Dig underground to find buried Rings. Rings are also scattered around the three mountains, and the G.U.N. robots and Boos are limited here. Gliding through the Balloons will also help.
3rd Mission: Find the lost Chao![]
As per usual, Knuckles will need the Mystic Melody in order to complete this mission. In fact, Knuckles only needs the Mystic Melody to find the lost Chao. Knuckles will need to take the rocket to Pumpkin Mountain and play the Mystic Melody at the Ancient Ruin there. Afterward, Knuckles can jump up to a portion of the mountain to reach the lost Chao.
4th Mission: Collect the Emerald pieces in 3 minutes 0 seconds![]
This mission is not particularly difficult as, despite its size, Pumpkin Hill is relatively easy to navigate through if one learns the layout. The player may need to use a Hint Box or two if they have trouble.
Last Mission: Clear Hard mode![]
Hard mode requires two Level Up Items: the Sunglasses and Shovel Claw. The stage has many more Boos than normal, including the Boom Boos which float around the rockets and tombstones. The Emerald Shards in this mode are located in the following fixed places:
- On Ghost Train Mountain, the player should reach the turntable. From there, they must Climb straight down the side of the mountain in the direction the back end of the train is facing. When the player comes to the chimney pipe, they should turn the camera. From there, the first Emerald Shard can be seen floating above a mechanism swinging iron balls. The player should Glide over and grab it.
- The next Emerald Shard is located near the bottom of Pumpkin Mountain. On the side of the mountain that faces away from the center of the stage, there is a platform where the player can find two skulls breathing fire. The Emerald Shard can be found in the wall where the skulls' flames meet. The player must wait for the flames to stop, then Dig.
- To find the last Emerald Shard, the player should head to Church Mountain. They must climb up to the tip of the steeple and try to balance on top of it by just barely tapping the Control Stick. Once at the top, equip the Sunglasses, and a Spring will appear below Knuckles and launch him into the air. At the height of the Spring's launch, the player must Glide forward to grab the Emerald Shard.
Level Up Item[]
The Level Up Item in this level is the Shovel Claw. This allows Knuckles to Dig and is necessary to complete the game, for at least one Emerald Shard requires Digging.
Chao Container locations[]
- Halfway up Pumpkin Mountain, the first Chao Container can be found stacked together with a Wooden Container on a ledge that sits at the same height as the local ghost train.
- On Ghost Train Mountain, the second Chao Container can be found on a platform behind the ghost pumpkin pillar. This platform is located at the end of the Balloon trail, which can be seen from the top of the mountain.
- The player must Glide from the top of the column where the second Chao Container is found, then head toward the center of the stage. Here, they should see a platform about halfway up, almost directly in the center, where the final Chao Container is.
Animals[]
Big the Cat sighting[]
Inside one of Ghost Train Mountain's cages is Big the Cat.

Books and comics[]
Archie Comics[]
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Pumpkin Hill appears as a location that was visited by Knuckles the Echidna to collect the Emerald Shards. Pumpkin Hill was later visited again by several characters during the Shattered World Crisis.
Trivia[]
- Shadow's stage Sky Rail appears to take place somewhere around Pumpkin Hill, but during the day, rather than twilight.
- An arcade game called Sonic Ghost Shooting takes elements from this stage.
- This is the only level in Sonic Adventure 2: Battle and the 2012 remaster of the game to not have a Gold Beetle. In the original Dreamcast version, the Beetle is found just off the ledge with the middle switch on Ghost Train Mountain.
