The Propeller Spring,[1] also known as the Propeller Pad,[2] is a gimmick that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is an airborne version of the Spring that is used to gain altitude.

Description[]

The Propeller Spring is a standard face-up Spring with a propeller on its bottom that floats in midair. It also has small green arrows surrounding it. In gameplay, by bouncing on the Propeller Spring with the Homing Attack, it will rise higher up into the air, allowing the player to gain more height for otherwise unreachable areas. However, it can only reach a certain height and the player has to continuously bounce on it to maintain its height or it falls down again. The player can also bounce regularly on it, but it will not make it ascend.

Games appearance[]

In Sonic Adventure 2 and its enhanced port Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, the Propeller Spring only appears in Sky Rail, where it is the signature gimmick of the stage. In this game, the Propeller Spring's Spring displays slight wear and its colors are toned down.

The Propeller Spring can be frustrating to use, as the player must be directly above them before using the Homing Attack to bounce and if the player is too off to a side they will ricochet off it and into the void.

Sonic Advance 3[]

Sonic Generations[]

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, the Propeller Pads are only encountered in the 200% Boost Gauge Challenge Challenge Act. In this game, the Propeller Pad's spring is identical to the regular Spring.

When using the Propeller Pad, the player can make it ascend by using both the Homing Attack and the Stomp on it. It should be noted that the Homing Attack's mechanics are changed when using the Propeller Pad, as instead of approaching it from the sides like always, Sonic will approach from above.

Sonic Frontiers[]

In Sonic Frontiers, Propeller Springs are present in both Open Zone areas and Cyber Space stages, albeit with a new design. It now has a loop structure floating beneath it which is cyan-colored inward and red-colored outward. It's propeller also has a darker color with glowing cyan edges. Coloring and minor details varies in the game: Propeller Springs during the Open Zone gameplay have a glowing blue triangle in place of the star and purple exterior, while Cyber Space stages retain their original design details and color scheme seen in previous mainline games.

In gameplay, they behave in the same way as in the console/PC version of Sonic Generations. In order for the player to use it, the player must use the Homing Attack repeatedly until the player reaches the needed height or the spring reaches its maximum altitude. Also, when it reaches its apex, a high-pitched sound is played and the cyan edges turn red.
