Prison Island is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog film series produced by Paramount Pictures and its spin-offs. It is a small island located in Tokyo Bay, Japan and is occupied by the Guardian Units of Nations for use as a high security prison and black-site research facility.
Shadow the Hedgehog has been imprisoned here in suspended animation for 50 years (1974–2024). During the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Shadow is awoken and escapes the island, kicking the events of the movie.
Description[]
Prison island is a small yet heavily fortified island, housing a large, walled military complex belonging to G.U.N. On top of the walls are multiple watchtowers surrounding a larger central building. The edges of the island seem to be mostly rocky shores with the exception of a small port.
History[]
Past[]
After the Guardian Units of Nations raided the research facility where Shadow the Hedgehog was being studied, Commander Walters deemed Shadow valuable but too dangerous to remain free. Walters ultimately decided to place Shadow into stasis on Prison Island, ensuring his containment under strict security measures.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3[]

Shadow is awakened from stasis, from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (film).
Fifty years after Shadow's imprisonment, Gerald Robotnik infiltrated Prison Island's security systems to release Shadow as part of his plan to enact revenge on the world. After Shadow awoke and was freed from his cryo-pod, an army of soldiers surrounded him. Shadow instantly attacked the soldiers, quickly incapacitating them and escaping the facility through an explosion that led outside. Shadow then skated across the Pacific Ocean towards Tokyo.
Trivia[]
- Prison Island is based on the location of the same name from the Sonic the Hedgehog series, debuting in Sonic Adventure 2. Unlike in the games, however, it is a small isle instead of a large island.
