The Prelates are a group that appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. They are mindless, metallic slave-warriors under the service of Dark Enerjak that are created using the extracted Cores of Mobians.
Concept and creation[]
According to Ian Flynn, the design of the Prelates were possibly inspired by the Light suits from Tron: Legacy, as well as possibly the metal skin feature from Sonic Heroes.[1]

History[]
After the Prelate is defeated, the Core returns to their original bodies. They appear as sleek, silver, metallic beings with few defining features aside from their colored stripes and eyes. They are robot-like in that their eyes act as both energy weapons and HUDs displaying objectives and orders as well as scanning their area of perception and assessing subjects of interest. They also demonstrate enhanced strength and resilience as they can quickly reboot if forced offline, making them persistent threats. While they can be destroyed by strong, precise attacks, they can simply be remade anew as the Core always remains intact. They also are capable of generating portals that appear similar to corrupted Super Warp Rings which allow them to travel through time and to alternate zones. Unlike the beings that their cores are extracted from, Prelates are incapable of feeling pain, nor can they experience emotions or think for themselves, making them autonomous, nonliving weapons. So far, the only prelates seen have originated in an alternate timeline from Mobius Prime where the entire world was conquered by Enerjak.[2][3]

Trivia[]
- All of the known Prelates who have actually been named are Archie-related Chaotix members.
- When the Prelates are summoned, they appear with a four-letter onomatopoeia based off their name. For example, Prelate-JS appears with a "JuSu" and Prelate-V appears with a "Vekt". They make the same sound when they fire their Opti-Burst.
