Guardians will drop a Portal Gear. These gears are very important, so don't forget to pick them up!

— Pick up the Portal Gear description, Sonic Frontiers[1]

The Portal Gear[1] (ポータルギア[2] Pōtaru Gia?) is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are collectable gear-like objects found on the Starfall Islands and used by the player to enter Cyber Space stages.

Description[]

Appearance[]

Portal Gears are cogs with eight distinct teeth around their Ring-shaped rims, slightly smaller than the height of Sonic the Hedgehog. The color of the luminescent lines along their teeth varies depending on the island on which they are found: Gears from Kronos and Ouranos Islands are cyan, on Ares Island they are yellow, and on Chaos Island they are red. These lines radiate a glow around the entire Gear and leave a faint trail of light when the Gear moves.

Features and abilities[]

As their names suggest, Portal Gears are necessary to connect Portals to Cyber Space. They are also capable of levitating under their own power.

In Sonic Frontiers, Portal Gears appear as important items in the possession of guardians during the Open Zone gameplay. After defeating each guardian, the Portal Gear appears in the area for the player to be obtained. Doing so will also open ancient gates in the Open Zone areas. Some guardians will drop more than one Portal Gear in the middle of the battle based on the different ways the player can damage them. Very rarely, certain enemies will also drop Portal Gears after defeating them. The player can also buy Portal Gears with Treasure Tokens or Gold Cards after successfully clearing the Fishing Spot minigame hosted by Big the Cat. Each Portal Gear is worth eight Treasure Tokens when the player chooses it in the "Trade Tokens" store.

Each inactivated Portal requires a certain amount of Portal Gears to make connection to the Cyber Space, as the player has to hop on the pedestal to insert the gear on the Portal's dome.[3] Each time the Portal Gear is evaporated into a digital form and become consumed into now active Portal. However, if the player does not have enough Portal Gears, the Portal will not make the connection to the Cyber Space.[4] Each time the player inserts Portal Gears into inactive Portals, that amount is reduced from the total number of gears that the player has obtained.

If the player pre-ordered Digital Deluxe Edition of the game with The Explorer's Treasure Box bonus, Sonic would automatically have one extra Portal Gear at the start of the game.[5]
