The Portal[1] (ポータル[2] Pōtaru?), also known as the Cyber Space portal[3] (電脳空間の入り口[4] Den'nō kūkan no iriguchi?, lit. "Entrance to Cyber Space"), is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Located on each one of Starfall Islands, they are large, ancient devices created by an ancient civilization. Portals in Sonic Frontiers are used to enter Cyber Space stages to receive Vault Keys. They have to be activated by using Portal Gears in order to gain connection to the Cyber Space.

Description[]

Portals are large, throne-like structures made of pieces of solid rock and undefined black material. Due to their inactive use, chunks of moss have formed around them. When active, magenta digital energy is seen moving on the black material between rock gaps and "pierced splat" part of the structure. The damaged top part of the Portal contains large ring structure with round hole on it, where all of the digital energy accumulates when the portal is connected to Cyber Space. The energy transitions through the pierced splat lines to a small, round switch with a magenta ring on it, located at the the Portal's lower rail. To be transported into Cyber Space, the user has to touch the identify button to be connected and get teleported to the digital dimension.

In Sonic Frontiers, Portals are used to gain access to Cyber Space stages in each Open Zone area. Each inactive Portal requires a certain amount of Portal Gears to connect to Cyber Space and bridge the gap between dimensions.[5][6] The player has to hop on the pedestal to insert the gears into the Portal's button.[7] Once enough Portal Gears are inserted, the Portal becomes active and the player can then access the stage by pressing Square/X button while standing on the Portal's pedestal. If the player does not have enough Portal Gears, more gears have to be collected in the Open Zone area by defeating guardians or buying them separately by spending Treasure Tokens earned in the fishing minigame.[8] Also, additional Portals called Purple Portals[9] (紫ポータル Murasaki Pōtaru?) will lead to Fishing Spots, where players can play the fishing minigame hosted by Big the Cat. A detail that separates these Portals from ones leading to Cyber Space stages is the digital energy around the structure being colored purple. Sonic also has to collect Purple Coins in order to play the fishing minigame. When the player has cleared a Cyber Space stage, the player is transported back to the Portal's pedestal and is rewarded with Vault Keys based on how many stage missions have been completed. The player can return to these Cyber Space stages as many times as it takes.[10] When the player has cleared all four missions in each Cyber Space stage, the color of the Portal's digital energy changes from magenta to cyan as a sign of the Cyber Space stage being cleared.

All marked Portal locations on the Open Zone can be found in the map menu. However, only surrounding areas that are revealed by completing Challenges will be displayed, including Portal locations.[1][2] After completing all of the Challenges on any of the Starfall Islands, the player unlocks the ability to use fast travel for any Portal on the Map menu by moving the cursor on the Portal's icon and pressing A button.[11]

History[]

Past[]

The Cyber Space Portals were created by the Ancients on the Starfall Islands during an unknown time period. As the islands have been forgotten with time,[12][13] the Portals have become inactive.[7]

Sonic Frontiers Prologue[]

Convergence[]

Portal (Sonic Frontiers Prologue- Convergence)

Dr. Eggman locates a Portal, from Sonic Frontiers Prologue: Convergence.

At the end of Sonic Frontiers Prologue: Convergence and beginning of Sonic Frontiers, Dr. Eggman locates a inactive Portal deep within the forest of Kronos Island during his search to discover the secrets of the Ancients.[14] As he is standing on the pedestal, he attaches a drive, the Egg Device, into the console. The device housed the doctor's latest artificial intelligence. As the A.I. upload its programing into Cyber Space, the Portal and Cyber Space both return online after years of dormancy, summoning multiple robotic creatures and a giant Titan via wormholes of digital energy.[15] The A.I. detected danger and inform the doctor that it is executing the "protective initiative". Surprised, Eggman quickly tries to rip the drive off the Portal, but he is unsuccessful and both he and the drive are sucked into Cyber Space.[16]

Divergence[]

While exploring Angel Island, Knuckles finds a Chao trying to get something behind a rock wall at Sky Sanctuary. He helps the Chao get what it wants and discovers a strange gear. However, when he applies it to its rightful place, Knuckles finds himself transported into a floating island overlooking a dark landscape.[17]

Sonic Frontiers[]

Arriving to the Starfall Islands, Sonic manages to escape Cyber Space shortly after being transported in with Tails and Amy Rose. He wakes up in front of a Portal located on Kronos Island alone.[12] As Sonic wonders if he is the only survivor of the wormhole that brought them into Cyber Space, he hears a mysterious voice giving him cryptic instructions to tear down the walls between dimensions.[18][19] After attempting to ask the context to these commands, Sonic sets off to find his friends.
