The Popgun[1] is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is Fang the Hunter's weapon of choice and main form of offense.
Concept and creation[]
During the development of Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble, Fang was supposed to have a silver magnum or revolver to further make him resemble a cowboy. The idea was scrapped due to maturity issues, as the ESRB's (E10+) rating had yet to be created. One infamous development screenshot shows Fang aiming his revolver at Sonic the Hedgehog to scare or shoot him. So far, only the Archie Comics has had Fang hold a magnum.
Description[]
Appearance[]
The Popgun is a simple blue handheld pistol with a a brown grip and a cork stopper loaded in the barrel.
Features and traits[]
The popgun is capable of firing cork stoppers instead of bullets. Although these projectiles appear relatively harmless, they can still hit their targets with enough force to hurt them.
History[]
Sonic the Fighters[]
The Popgun made its debut in Sonic the Fighters. In this game, some of Fang's attacks include him firing his Popgun at opponents, firing it either rapidly or as one massive shot at the opponent.
Sonic Mania[]
In Sonic Mania and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, during the fight with the Heavy Magician in Mirage Saloon Zone, the robot will occasionally take the form of Fang the Sniper, who will jump around on his tail and use the Popgun to fire cork stoppers at different heights in an effort to injure the playable character.
Fang's Big Break[]
In Sonic Superstars: Fang's Big Break, Fang the Hunter brought the Popgun with him to the Starfall Islands in the Marvelous Queen. After Fang arrives, he sees an armored stranger lurking in the shadows, and pulls the Popgun out of his vehicle to patrol the islands. While exploring, Fang discovers giant foot prints. Fang follows the tracks, which lead him to a giant Flicky. He proceeds to shoot his Popgun at its face only to anger it. The giant Flicky loudly squawks and chases Fang, and he drops his Popgun, which is crushed underfoot the big bird's talons.
IDW Publishing[]
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing, Fang used a Popgun on a mission to steal a Chaos Emerald.

Trivia[]
- The corks can be spammed at the opponents in Sonic the Fighters, giving them less chance to move. This attack works especially well on CPUs, but can be deflected by a Spin Dash.
- While the Popgun itself doesn't directly appear in Sonic Superstars, Fang's giant mech fire corks out of its hands as a reference to his iconic weapon.
- The Popgun is very similar to Clutch the Opossum's Gun Cane he uses.
