PS5 Upgrade[]
A number of cross-generation titles released on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 allow for the user to obtain both versions with one purchase, either by:
- purchasing the game digitally via the PlayStation Store--the user will be given the option to download either version on PS5
- purchasing the physical PS4 version, popping the disc inside a PS5 with a disc drive, then claiming the digital PS5 version as a free upgrade*
Note that the PS4 version's disc must be inside the PS5's disc drive for the user to play the PS5 version if obtained through the second method. Purchasing the physical PS5 version will not allow the user to obtain the digital PS4 version.
Some titles also allow users to transfer their save files over from the PS4 versions to the PS5 versions. Unlike Smart Delivery titles on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S which allow for the user to alternate between systems using the same save file, once the PS4 save is transferred onto the PS5 version, they will be unable to load the transferred save file back onto the PS4 version again.
To get PS4 saves onto the PS5, the user must either:
- have an active PlayStation Plus subscription and move or copy their saves to the cloud, then download them onto their PS5
- have a USB drive (exFAT or FAT32-formatted), move or copy their saves over, then plug the USB into the PS5
Each title varies in how they handle PS4 save transfers; Sonic Frontiers and Sonic Superstars include a "Carry over from PlayStation 4" option on their respective title screens. In Sonic X Shadow Generations, the PS4 save must be loaded onto the PS5 before the user starts the game in order to transfer their save.
Cross-gen PS4 and PS5 titles have separate trophy lists, unlike Smart Delivery Xbox titles which have one achievement list tied to both versions. When transferring saves from PS4 to PS5, some titles autopop trophies on the PS5 version depending on progress made in the PS4 save file.
Unless otherwise stated, autopopping can be done repeatedly in certain titles; if a user is partway through a game on PS4 when they transfer their save, they can transfer future saves as much as they like, allowing them to obtain any remaining PS5 trophies.

* - some games require an extra fee
1 - with the exception of the "Hope Across Ages", "A Land at Peace", and "Trophies Completed!" trophies, as the game timewarps to before fighting the final boss on a completed save
2 - the game warns the user that some trophies will not transfer over to PS5
3 - the transfer can only be done once, and the PS4 save must be loaded before a PS5 save is present on the console
4 - the save file can only be transferred using PlayStation Plus' cloud storage
