The Pirates of the Setting Dawn, also known as the Shellbreaker Crew,[1] are a group that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. They are a group of pirates under the command of Captain Shellbreaker that sail the seas in search of treasure for their own benefit.[2]
History[]
Past[]
The Pirates of the Setting Dawn was once a mighty fleet. At some point, the crew found Razor the Shark and his sister Blade on the Knives trying to steal from them. Rather than executing them though, the crew took the siblings in as their own. Soon after, Abyss the Squid would betray her crew when she joined up with the Eggman Empire and took a sizable portion of the crew with her to form the Southern Oceans Egg Army. This left Shellbreaker resentful at Abyss and with only a few loyal crewmates left to follow him as their captain. Shellbreaker later lost Razor too when a "philosophical disagreement" between them made the crew throw Razor overboard.[2]
Using some untranslatable charts Abyss had left behind, the Pirates of the Setting Dawn would hunt for treasures and relics to sell to the highest bidder. Eventually, the crew came across Princess Undina of Meropis and held her for ransom. When he discovered that Undina could translate Abyss' charts however, Shellbreaker forgot the ransom and kept her on his crew as her navigator.[2]
The Case of the Pirate Princess[]
While sailing the seas, the Pirates of the Setting Dawn came across Echo the Dolphin, Razor the Shark, and the Chaotix, all of whom they abducted and brought aboard their ship.[3] To avoid further conflict, Razor and the Chaotix decided to infiltrate the crew by joining it. However, Echo, who believed that she was being betrayed, was taken to the ship's brig. Razor and the Chaotix were able to become familiar with the pirates while a course had been plotted for a nearby island.[2]
