— In-game description, Sonic Frontiers[1]

Pinball[1] is an Island Mystery in Sonic Frontiers. It is the second Island Mystery on Chaos Island, as well the sixth one overall. Its goal is to score 5,000,000 points in order to move on.

Description[]

Pinball takes place in the interior of a volcano on Chaos Island, inside a chamber with a Pinball Board and a button to start playing it. The Pinball Board is decorated with cyan and purple details, which glow for a few seconds when the Score Multiplier increases. At the top of the board, a round purple door with cyan details is located there.

Story[]

At some point after helping the Koco apprentice, Tails would start studying a door connected to a volcano, which he theorizes that it will open using the cyber-energy stored in Sonic's body. As the latter approaches the door, it opens, revealing a room with a Pinball Board inside.

In The Final Horizon, Sonic and Tails theorize that the system was developed by the Ancients as a mechanism for manually erupting the volcano on Chaos Island to take advantage of its geothermal energy output. The pinball unlocking mechanism was designed to prevent the volcano from being easily detonated; the pinball itself stores energy as it collects "points" on the board, and when sufficient energy is stored the volcano can be erupted by striking the gate at the back of the board with the ball. When asked why pinball specifically was chosen as the mechanism of choice, Tails simply surmises that its engineers did so for their own amusement.

Gameplay[]

The Pinball Island Mystery consists in obtaining 5,000,000 points by hitting the five Bumpers and two Triangle Bumpers placed inside the board using a sphere. The player is given control to two Flippers, being controlled with Switch l/Switch r // L1/R1 // Xbox One LB button/Xbox One RB button. On the top right part of the screen, the achieved score, as well the score left to obtain, are displayed, while on the bottom right, the number of remaining spheres can be seen.

During this minigame, the player can increase their Score Multiplier in order to obtain more points when hitting an object. The Score Multiplier is displayed on the bottom left, above a bar that, when filled up, will double the Score Multiplier. The bar can be filled using Rings and Red Star Rings found on the board. The maximum limit for Score Multiplier is 256.

Trivia[]

  • There is a glitch that allows the player to skip the Island Mystery entirely and fight Knight early.
