The Phantom Gunner retains the Heavy Gunner's police officer aesthetic, but he no longer has limbs. Instead, the Phantom Gunner possesses a giant blue jetpack that contains a missile launcher.
History[]
Sonic Mania[]
In Sonic Mania, during their climactic fight with the Phantom Egg, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles got transported to a different room where they fought the Heavy Gunner-turned-Phantom Gunner. Their fight was a brief one though, as Sonic and co. were returned to their fight with the Phantom Egg before the Phantom Gunner managed to defeat them.
Sonic Mania Plus[]
In Sonic Mania Plus it was revealed that the Phantom Gunner got destroyed after his battle in the Titanic Monarch Zone, his remains ending up on Angel Island along with the other broken-down Phantom Heavies (except for the Heavy Magician). However, the Phantom Gunner got revived as the Heavy Gunner after the Phantom King got his hands on the Phantom Ruby and used it to revive himself and the broken-down Hard Boiled Heavies.
The Heavy Gunner soon after became the Phantom Gunner again. When Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Mighty and Ray fought the Phantom Egg, the group of heroes got transported to a different room where they faced the Phantom Gunner. Like before however, the Phantom Gunner missed the chance to eliminate Sonic and co. when they got pulled back into the fight with the Phantom Egg.
Powers and abilities[]
The Phantom Gunner is capable of flight and possesses a giant rocket stash on his jetpack that can fire different kinds of missiles.
The Phantom Gunner segment is the first section the player will be transported to. In this section, the Phantom Gunner will, from the background, launch several red and blue missiles at the platform the player is on: red missiles will burst on the floor and spread fire to the platform, while blue missiles can be knocked back at the Phantom Gunner with an attack.
