The Pens are based off penguins. Originally, their appearance highly resembled that of the original Penguinators, being upstanding figures with blue armor on their heads, backs and wings, split white bellies with four black holes on them, black faces with a sharp yellow beak and cartoonish black eyes, and stubby red legs with yellow feet.
However, during a later incident, the Pens were upgraded with a new design, being laid-down penguin robots with gray underbellies, blue armor on their back, heads and wings, short yellow beaks, cartoonish black eyes, no legs, and a red jet engine hidden underneath their rears. Overall, they each resemble more of a penguin-shaped missile.
In gameplay, Pen walks back and forth. When the playable character approaches them however, they make a stop and launch snow balls at them. The player has to avoid the snowballs it launches and then hit them with a Spin Jump to take them out. Upon their destruction, they will release an Animal.
Sonic Advance 2[]
In Sonic Advance 2, the Pens return as enemies. In this game, they were given an updated design. They can be encountered in Ice Paradise Zone.
In gameplay, Pens behave like Penguinators in the sense that, rather than launching a projectile, they will instead charge at the playable character. Unlike Penguinators, however, this version of the Pen does not stand up at any point. Regardless, they are easily taken out with any attack. Upon their destruction, they will release an Animal.
