Orbot is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing. He is a robot built by Dr. Eggman, and is one of the doctor's aide robots.

Appearance

Orbot is a diminutive robot with a round head composed of a semispherical cap with a smaller black semisphere under it for a lower face. His lower face can separate to reveal a cover, representing his mouth, and he has two grey-framed and pupil-less eyes. He has also a ball joint for a chest and red gloves for hands. His arms and back consist each of two thin bars that are joined by a ball joint. His lower body is a small semisphere with a grey inside and a ball joint connecting it to his back. Orbot has a red head cap and light blue eyes and mouth, while the rest of him is black and grey with a few red joints.

History

Past

After Dr. Eggman disappeared following the Resistance-Eggman Empire war, Orbot welcomed Neo Metal Sonic as the new head of the Eggman Empire until further notice.[1]

At some point after Dr. Eggman disappeared, Orbot and Cubot were discovered in Eggman's last known lab by the Chaotix, who were tracking Eggman. Although the two robots were cooperative when the Chaotix interrogated them, they knew nothing about Eggman's whereabouts.[2]

Fallout

Orbot reassures Neo

Orbot speaks with Neo Metal Sonic, from Sonic the Hedgehog #2.

In a secret base, Orbot and Cubot met up with Neo Metal Sonic, who was currently controlling the Badnik hordes. There, Orbot revealed in his report that Sonic was heading towards Rough and Tumble.[3]

The Fate of Dr. Eggman

Some time after, Orbot went over the preparations Neo Metal Sonic had made for the next stage of his master plan before being order to signal Neo Metal Sonic's flagship.[4]

Battle For Angel Island

Later on, Orbot and Cubot joined Dr. Starline, Rough and Tumble in the Final Egg, where Starline sought to restore Dr. Eggman's memories after he lost them following the end of the Eggman War and became a reformed handyman. After three sessions however, Eggman showed no signs of returning to his previous personality. When Starline suggested a mental trigger, Orbot tried suggesting to Eggman to review eldritch creatures he may want to resurrect and later lose control over. Eggman only dismissed this, leaving Orbot to wonder if he wanted Eggman to actually have his memories restored. Soon, the group was met by a badly damaged Metal Sonic. Upon seeing Metal Sonic, Eggman regained his memories, much to Orbot's slight disappointment. Eggman then ordered him and Cubot to get him a change of clothes. Some time after, Eggman got Orbot to call up the schematics on the Metal Virus which he wished to unleash on the world as revenge for his latest indignity.[5]

After assisting Dr. Eggman in preparing some backpacks loaded with the Metal Virus, Orbot came with Eggman as he went to meet with Rough and Tumble in the hangar. There, Orbot helped Cubot back on his feet after he got kicked around by Rough while Eggman gave the two mercenaries the Metal Virus backpacks (which he said were "back-ups" to use against Sonic). Orbot then saw Eggman present the mercenaries with a tank to attack Sonic and Amy with in Echo Mine.[6] When the Faceship was later finished, Orbot and Cubot got onboard it with Dr. Eggman and Dr. Starline, where Orbot launched the Faceship on Eggman's command with Cubot's assistance. With all systems stable, Orbot reported that they were moving towards their first target: Windmill Village. Arriving over the drop zone, Orbot reported back to Eggman, who had his first Metal Virus batch dowsed on the village.[7]

Crisis City

After Dr. Eggman created a Zombot outbreak in Floral Forest Village, Orbot showed Eggman with an analysis sheet that there had been a steady decline in Zombots responding to his commands when the Zombot horde did not obey Eggman's orders to attack Sonic when he arrived in the village. After a short argument with Eggman, Starline, who had had his confidence in his idol shaken, confided in Orbot his second thoughts over Eggman's inability to plan for the long-term. Orbot replied that it was always fifty-fifty for the doctor, with the usual routine beginning with Eggman's plotting and ending with Sonic defeating him.[8]

The Last Minute

Some time later, after Eggman and Starline returned from a private mission, Orbot told Eggman that the Faceship was currently over Spiral Hill Village and had already deployed a batch of Metal Virus down to it.[9]

All or Nothing

Orbot witnessed Starline invite the Deadly Six onto the Faceship and watched how they managed to quickly overthrow the platypus and Eggman. He and Cubot soon received a message from Rouge, who had sneaked into the Faceship days earlier; Rouge requested for Orbot and Cubot to pretend that they were happy to now serve the Deadly Six so that she could coordinate with Orbot to spy on their deployments and coordinate a counterattack. Zavok continued to ask several questions about Eggman's whereabouts. When Orbot pulled up a list of all of Eggman's previous bases, he questioned him about what Angel Island was. Cubot soon interrupted and lied that there was a problem down in the Metal Virus factory. After Zavok left to deal with the alert, Rouge came down and told the two robots to send Amy the latest coordinates so that they could attack immediately. After Orbot asked how she would get the Chaos Emerald from Zavok, she stated that she was still weighing her options and requested that they continue to play along.[10][11]

Soon enough, when the Faceship arrived at Angel Island, Rouge discreetly removed the white Chaos Emerald from Eggman's throne, depowering the ship. She revealed herself to Zavok and then told Orbot and Cubot to tuck and roll as the Faceship fell downward into the ocean. The two robots managed to survive the crash and stayed still on the land that was close down below. After both Sonic and Metal Sonic were pushed to the ground by a giant Zavok's breath, Cubot warmly greeted their nemesis while Orbot took notice of his infection and advised him to run. Sonic responded by telling him that running was not helping him hold back the Metal Virus anymore. Orbot then corrected the misunderstanding by saying to Sonic he meant run from the incoming Zombots that sought to infect him.[12][13]

Personality

Unlike many of Eggman's robots, Orbot is not a mindless drone and possesses both a personality and emotions of his own. Orbot is one who looks at the bright side of things, especially for the sake of his boss when he is in a foul mood.[3] He is also shown to be lazy.[2][8]

Orbot possesses a sense of spiteful sarcasm, having once asked Eggman if he wanted to review "a list of eldritch creatures [he'd] like to resurrect and then lose control over", a clear reference to the doctor's past failures in this field.[5]

Powers and abilities

Orbot is able to levitate and can move freely through midair.[5]

Relationships

Dr. Eggman

Dr. Eggman is Orbot's boss and creator. Although Orbot is loyal towards Dr. Eggman and waits on him hand and foot, he does not like him very much, especially when he preys upon his emotions and verbally abuses him. In fact, during the time Eggman suffered from amnesia and became a reformed handyman, Orbot was unsure if he wanted the real Dr. Eggman back. He likewise expressed disappointment when Eggman got back to normal.[5]
