In Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, Omochao replaces Tikal's hint orbs from Sonic Adventure as Hints in the Stages. He can as well be picked up and thrown as a weapon to destroy enemies, and be damaged by stray bullets from enemies or the player's own attacks. When thrown into a bottomless pit, Omochao will soon after reappear in his earlier location.

In Sonic Adventure 2 and its enhanced port Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, various Omochao appear as Hints in the Stages, replacing the Hint Orbs in Sonic Adventure. This is a role he would repeat in future titles. To receive a hint from Omochao, all the playable character has to do is touch him. He will then follow the playable character around while speaking out his hint, before returning to his spot. He may also give tips during certain loading screens. In Stages, he can as well be picked up and thrown as a weapon to destroy enemies and breakable obstacles, and be damaged by stray bullets from enemies or the player's own attacks. He is also vulnerable to effects in the environment in Stages, such as being sucked into outer space through an opened window in Eternal Engine. When ending up in a bottomless pit or falling off the game map though, Omochao will respawn in his earlier location soon after.

When attacked, picked up, thrown, or put down, Omochao makes remarks. When recovering from being thrown or attacked in particular, Omochao will express his displeasure of such rough treatment. Comically, he may also fall unconscious for several seconds with smoke coming from his injuries, only to wake up to ramble at the player, such as saying that he will not help the player anymore, or ask of who and where he is, due to amnesia. Similarly, Omochao has a distinctive sound when he initiates flight and when getting "hurt".

Omochao appears frequently in Chao World. In the Chao Competition, he holds signs in both the Lobby and races, and even fills the roles of referees in Chao Races and Chao Karate. In Chao Races in particular, he appears at the start of such races where he fires the starting pistol to mark the start of the races. There are also more Omochao along the routes of the Chao Races which show the direction the Chao are supposed to go by waving flags. Also, in one of the Chao Races, the player's seven opponents will all be Omochao.

Outside regular gameplay, Omochao is an unlockable menu theme, and in 2-Player Battle Mode, the Chao Walker's melee attack is an Omochao-based projectile. In a reversed fashion, the Dark Chao Walker's melee attack uses a color-swapped version of the Chao Walker's melee attack.

In Sonic Free Riders, in the game's World Grand Prix mode, Omochao serves as a commentator and presenter of the latest World Grand Prix, where he covers the latest races for the competing teams for the viewers by interviewing the participants.
  +
  +
During Team Heroes' rounds of races, Omochao readily introduced the viewers to the beginning of the World Grand Prix, before interviewing Team Heroes and their first opponents, Team Rose. Afterward, Omochao noted that they were about to have a good race. When Team Heroes beat Team Rose, Omochao interviewed the former on their victory. As Team Dark were then introduced as Team Heroes' next opponents, Omochao thought E-10000B looked familiar. During the teams' races though, Knuckles accused E-10000B of foul play. Omochao thus had them review the recordings of the race, but found nothing. After Team Heroes beat Team Dark, and Team Babylon were introduced as Team Heroes' final opponents, Omochao was eager to see the feud between the two teams play out. After Team Bablyon seemingly lost to Team Heroes, Omochao interviewed the former on their victory, although it was soon revealed that Team Babylon had technical trouble during the race. As a rematch was arranged to decide a fair outcome, Omochao was excited to see it play out. In the end, Team Heroes won, and Omochao interviewed them. When asked where Team Babylon was though, Omochao noted that they had already left, but had a camera crew track them down so Sonic could have a final word with Jet. With this round of races over, Omochao signed off for the time.
  +
  +
During Team Babylon's rounds of races, Omochao once again introduced the viewers to the World Grand Prix before sneaking in separate interviews with Tema Babylon and their opponents, Team Dark. Afterward, Omochao noted that they were in for a heated race. After Team Babylon defeated Team Dark, Omochao interviewed the former on their victory. When Team Rose were then introduced as Team Babylon's next opponents, Omochao noted that despite Team Rose's teamwork trouble, a good race was awaiting them. When this clash ended with Team Babylon's victory, Omochao was left impressed, and remarked with great interest that the finals, which featured Team Babylon going up against Team Heroes, were going to be great. When Team Babylon seemingly claimed victory, Omochao interviewed them. However, he was surprised when Jet and Sonic decided to have a rematch to decide the winner. After Jet won, Omochao interviewed his team on their victory. Afterward, Omochao told the viewers that he could not wait for the next World Grand Prix if Team Babylon and Team Heroes were going to compete in it.
  +
  +
During Team Dark's rounds of races, Omochao readily introduced the viewers to the beginning of the World Grand Prix. However, Omochao noticed that Team Dark was one member short. After arguing with the team that they needed a third member or they would be disqualified, Omochao rejected Rouge's offer to join them. Regardless, Team Dark had E-10000B join them on a whim, believing that their opponents, Team Babylon, were no match for them. Noting this was getting ugly, Omochao looked forward to the outcome. After Team Dark won, Omochao saw E-10000B butting in on his job as the commentator, much to his dismay. Regardless, Team Dark proceeded to compete against their next opponents, Team Heroes, which Omochao assured the viewers that he would have all the details on as it went on. After Team Dark beat Team Heroes though, the former wanted to head to the award ceremonies, but Omochao told them that they still had to face Team Rose in the finals. Although both teams got on Omochao's nerves, he remarked to the viewers that the teams were pretty evenly matched. After Team Dark won the finals though, Omochao saw that E-10000B had dropped out of the race due to damage, which Omochao noted meant that the last race did not count. After some persuasion from Cream. Omochao promised to send E-1000B to HQ for repairs while he commented on the rematch between Team Dark and Team Rose, which Omochao, upon orders from HQ, said would be a 2-on-3 match. After Team Dark won, Omochao noticed that said team had left to collect their winning prize. As the team was leaving though, Omochao told them that what they had taken were the dummy props for display and that they would have to wait for the awards ceremony. After noting how difficult Team Dark was making things, Omochao told the viewers that they still got some good races out of it.
  +
  +
During Team Rose's rounds of races, Omochao were ready to introduce the viewers to the opening ceremony when Team Rose appeared to join the competition. Though Omochao told them that they were ineligible to compete because they had not filled out their registration, he was told to permit them to compete since they had arrived before the opening ceremony ended. Afterward, it was revealed that Team Rose would be facing Team Heroes first, and Omochao noted that the former had to stay sharp against such opponents. After Team Rose advanced to the next round where they would face Team Bablyon, Omochao noted that a white-hot battle was about to commence. To Omochao's surprise though, Team Rose defeated Team Babylon and advanced to the finals where Team Dark awaited them, with the ensuing match being loudly proclaimed by Omochao. When it seemed like Team Rose had won though, Omochao noted that E-10000B was forced to drop out of the race due to damage, which, according to the rules meant that the last race did not count. As such, Team Rose and Team Dark's remaining members had to have a decisive race, which Omochao noted was an interesting turn of events. After Team Rose ensured their victory and started getting all excited, Omcohao told them to stay calm and go through the procedures. However, Amy made him patch her through to Sonic, and as Team Rose fell apart, Omochao noted to the viewers that despite this, they had some good races.
  +
  +
Eventually, Omochao introduced the viewers to the beginning of the awards ceremony. There, the host of the World Grand Prix, King Doc, who was revealed to be Dr. Eggman, wanted the racers to compete against his ultimate Gear-jockey, a turn of events that Omochao was sure would be cleared up soon. After the race though, Eggman challenged the racers to another round on the ultimate Extreme Gear he had made based on the data of the racers, thus confusing Omochao about how many rounds there were going to be and who the real champion was. After Eggman lost though, Omochao and the others discovered that Metal Sonic, in the disguise of E-10000B, had stolen Eggman's work and replaced it with fake data so he could use Eggman's data to defeat Sonic. After Sonic beat Metal Sonic though, Omochao thought that a champion had finally been decided. However, since Eggman had no reward to give to the winner to begin with, Omochao realized, much to his grief, that no champion could be decided. However, he assured the viewers back home that they still had a good time watching all those races.

In gameplay, Omochao is also present in the game's Tutorial mode, introducing the player to the game's controls.

In addition to the above, Omochao also appears as a part of the game's story mode. During the events of this mode, Omochao and a neutral Chao were in the beginning attacked by an Egg Pawn and Flapper near the London Bridge. However, these Badniks were destroyed when Bowser Jr. fell from the sky. Omochao and the Chao proceeded to thank him for saving them and encouraged him to face Shadow and Silver in an event by noting that it would impress Bowser. After Bowser Jr. beat the hedgehogs, Omochao and the Chao came with Shadow and Silver. A while later, Omochao arrived at the Main Stadium, which was soon covered in a dense fog. He then lost Toad, whom he only found after Sonic and Mario arrived. Toad claimed that they were attacked by Sonic and Tails, but Omochao knew that those were fakes made of fog. Omochao then suggested that they looked for the source of the fog. During their search, they lost Mario and Luigi, but ran into Dry Bowser and Dry Bones, who told them to join forces with them. However, when Omochao and Toad refused, Dry Bowser and Dry Bones began to become aggressive. Fortunately, Mario and Luigi soon showed up and defeated Dry Bowser before chasing him away. The plumber duo then destroyed the local Fog Machine, thus clearing the stadium of the fog. Omochao then decided to stay and look after the stadium while Mario, Luigi and Toad set off to destroy more Fog Machines.

Omochao soon after welcomed back Sonic, Tails, Mario, Luigi, Espio, Charmy, Omega and Toad at the Main Stadium after they had destroyed all the Fog Machines. However, the fog soon returned, except much denser than before. The heroes thus gathered again and Omega prepared to lead them to Stonehenge where a possible clue to the fog could be found. Upon the mention of Stonehendge, Omochao explained what the place was, before giving Toad a walkie-talkie, just in case. Some time after, Omochao, Charmy, Espio, Omega and Toad managed to clear the fog from the Msin Stadium. When the fog was neutralized for good by Sonic and Mario, Omochao participated in the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.

Some time afterward, after Tails and Luigi lost the Tokyo '64 to Eggman Nega and Bowser Jr., an Omochoa suggested they sought out Vector for help. While later looking for Eggman Nega and Bowser Jr., Tails and Luigi met another Omochao, who told told them where they could possibly find Eggman Nega.

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, Omochao again fills the role of in-game Hints in the Stages. In this game, he acts exactly like Tikal's Hint Orbs in Sonic Adventure, acting upon being passed by and will float around the player. This function is only optional though, and he can be turned on and off from the game's Options menu. Similarly, Omachao appears on the loading screen for the Acts to remind players of controls, objects and other features. He also runs the Skill Shop in the White Space.

— Omochao, Sonic Generations (console/PC)

Omochao (オモチャオ Omochao?) is a character in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is a mass-produced, robotic Chao with virtually unlimited knowledge about the world. A close friend and ally of the Animals and Chao, he is also a television personality, working as both a news reporter and commentator for various sports competitions.

Since his introduction, Omochao has become a staple in the Sonic series as a support character, serving as an informant to the characters and a universal Hint to the players.

Appearance

Omochao is a small robot modeled after a Neutral Chao. As such, he has a round waterdrop-like head with large eyes but no nose and a round torso smaller than his head. Both his head and torso are light blue with a stripe of darker blue running down the middle. He also has smooth yellow feet with orange soles and tips but no legs, and gray cable-like arms with round yellow balls at the end for hands. Neither his arms or feet have digits. He also has small rivet studs around his framework and orange and yellow ripple-like eyes. Lastly, he has a small two-bladed propeller on top of his head and a wind-up key on his back, giving him the appearance of a wind-up toy.

Game appearances

Sonic Adventure

Omochao made his debut in Sonic Adventure and later its enhanced port, Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut. In this game, Omochao appears in the Chao Stadium by the door inside the Station Square Garden. He also appears during Chao Races. Here, several Omochao show which direction the Chao are to go. However, the Chao can sometimes disobey him and head in another direction.

Sonic Adventure 2

OmochaoSAdventure2

Omochao in Sonic Adventure 2: Battle.

When recovering from being thrown or attacked in particular, Omochao will express his displeasure of such rough treatment and stop offering the playable character hints in that location. Comically, he may also fall unconscious for several seconds with smoke coming from his injuries, only to wake up to ramble at the player.

Outside regular gameplay, Omochao also appears as an unlockable menu theme. Also, in 2-Player Battle Mode, the Chao Walker's melee attack is an Omochao-based projectile. In a reversed fashion, the Dark Chao Walker's melee attack uses a red and black version of the Chao Walker's Omochao attack, called the Dark Omochao.

Sonic Pinball Party

OmochaoSPinballParty

In Sonic Pinball Party, Omochao appears as a Hint for the player once more. In this game, the player can choose what to ask him about.

Sonic Battle

In Sonic Battle, Omochao himself does not appear. However, Cream's C. Air Cracker and Cream Cracker maneuvers utilize an Omochao as a mine that can be placed in any given place and be triggered when the opponent touches it. These moves are some of the strongest in the game in terms of damage.

Sonic Heroes

OmochaoSHeroes

In Sonic Heroes, Omochao serves as a tutorial Hint for the player. In this game, Omochao appears on the main menus where he will explain what the different features and options are all about, and, in the case of story mode, the individual difficulty degrees and gameplay styles for the game's playable teams. To have Omochao explain a feature on the menu screen, the player has to press Gamecube Y Button/XboxY/Square while at said feature. In addition, his voice appears in the tutorial level Sea Gate for Team Sonic and Team Rose, where he will explain the game's different mechanics. When Omochao explains something in Sea Gate, the playable characters are rendered immobile, and will remain so until Omochao finishes talking or the player skips his explanation.

In the other aspects of the game, Omochao does not appear, having been replaced with the Hint Rings and the characters' dialogues.

Sonic Advance 3

Omochao Adv 3

In Sonic Advance 3, Omochao serves again as an in-game Hint. In this game, he can be found in several places around the Zone Maps, the Sonic Factory and the Action Stages. To make Omochao provide the player with his hint, the playable character must stand beside Omochao and press up on Controlpadds. He will then be picked up and display his message on the screen. He also appears during the game's bad ending, where he flies over the Altar Emerald and takes a photo of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Cream and Cheese right before the incomplete ending credits.

Shadow the Hedgehog

Omochao Gun

The Omochao Gun in Shadow the Hedgehog.

In Shadow the Hedgehog, Omochao does not appear in person. However, there is an unlockable Weapon called the "Omochao Gun" that shoots Omochao heads as projectiles. These projectiles have a wide range and can bounce off walls. When upgraded, this weapon is capable of destroying most enemies with a single shot, and can take out multiple enemies in a single shot by bouncing off walls.

Sonic Riders series

Sonic Riders

In Sonic Riders, Omochao makes a few small appearances. In this game, he can be heard commentating on the game's various races and the condition of the playable character. He also appears as a news anchor in the Babylon Rogues' story in Story Mode, explaining the sudden appearance of Babylon Garden. He also appears as the store clerk on the Black Market where the player can buy new Extreme Gear.

Sonic Free Riders

Omochao-sonic-free-riders-7

Omochao in Sonic Free Riders.

In Sonic Free Riders, in the game's World Grand Prix mode, Omochao serves as a commentator and presenter of the latest World Grand Prix, where he covers the latest races for the competing teams for the viewers by interviewing the participants.

During the "Windy Hill in Spring Event", Omochao and the Animals organized an Easter hunt that Eggman and his Badniks tried to ruin. Fortunately, Team Sonic foiled the villain's plan.

Omochao also appears a Normal Power Type buddy which boosts the number of Animals saved.

Team Sonic Racing

In Team Sonic Racing, Omochao and his group of Chao friends (a Neutral Chao, a Hero Chao and a Dark Chao), who were affiliated with Team Rose, were having a picnic with Amy and Big when Team Sonic showed up, having been invited to this location. Soon after, a stranger appeared, a Tanuki calling himself Dodon Pa. Introducing himself as the one who sent the invitation, Dodon Pa told Team Sonic that they would be racing as a team in the most advanced cars he could create in a Grand Prix that would test their limits. After Team Sonic agreed to join Dodon Pa's Grand Prix, Big was invited into the competition as well when he took an interest in coming along. Not wanting Big to go alone, Omochao insisted that, as Big's teammates, they would be joining him. This lead to Omochao and his team joining the Grand Prix.

For the races, Omochao and his Chao friends received the Chao Pod to race in. Between the races, Omochao would provide Amy with exposition on the different types of cars. When Dodon Pa later took his racing challenges up a notch, Omochao was surprised. Not long after that, Omochao and his team were joined in the competition by Team Vector, Team Dark, and Team Eggman.

While waiting for the next race, Omochao and his team were radioed by Tails, who instructed them to join Team Sonic and Team Dark on the racetrack in order to help them take down Dr. Eggman, who had intruded on the two teams' race in order to compete against them on his own as a "special guest" (which Dodon Pa permitted despite knowing it was a lie). Being all about teamwork, Omochao confirmed to Tails on the racetrack that they had gotten the racecars' abilities down before helping Amy get into position using the Skim Boost. Omochao and his Chao friends then joined forces with the rest of Team Rose, Knuckles, Tails, Rouge, Omega and Team Vector. Together, they surrounded Eggman on the racetrack before delivering a massive beatdown on the doctor with their combined Wisp power-ups. However, Dodon Pa was too busy watching Eggman's beating to see who crossed the finish line first.[1]

Omochao later helped tell Big of what Omega planned to do with Dodon Pa after he seemed to be in cahoots with Dr. Eggman. Not long after, Omochao detected some strange telemetric signals coming from Dodon Pa that contained information on the teams' teamwork. With Omochao confirming that Dodon Pa was sending these signals to an unknown receiver, everyone but Big concluded that Dodon Pa was sending their information to Eggman. Not long after, Omochao would discuss strategy with his team. Shortly thereafter, Omochao was approached by Silver, who needed help keeping an eye on the whole racing track, as he sensed that something bad was coming. In response, Omochao told Silver to watch the Chao on the stands, as they would surely react if they saw something wrong. Later, after it was revealed that Dodon Pa was a good guy, Omochao learned from him that he was using the Grand Prix to gather information for his corporation's Ultimate Energy Engine, which Dodon Pa wanted to use for philanthropic purposes. This explained the telemetric signals Omochao detected.

Soon after, the heroes learned from Big that Eggman had kidnapped Dodon Pa and brought him to the Final Fortress. Wanting to rescue Dodon Pa, Omochao and co. went to the Final Fortress. There, Eggman had them compete in a number of races with Team Eggman and his army of Eggpawns in exchange for Dodon Pa, not knowing Eggman was using them to gather the Ultimate Team Energy needed to finish the Ultimate Energy Engine. Once the engine was complete, Eggman stole it from Dodon Pa and incorporated it into his Death Egg. Omochao and his crew subsequently faced the Death Egg, and beat it in a race. However, the Death Egg soon after went crazy and drove into the Final Fortress's core. As the Final Fortress crashed, Omochao and his companions were forced to abandon their cars and evacuate the airship while Team Sonic saved Dodon Pa. Down on the ground, Omochao was reunited with Team Sonic when they arrived with Dodon Pa. Just as the Grand Prix seemed over since the cars had been destroyed when the Final Fortress crashed, Dodon Pa decided to give everyone new cars, thus allowing Omochao and his friends to race once more.

In gameplay, Omochao appears as a playable Technique-Type character alongside a Neutral Chao, a Hero Chao and a Dark Chao, all driving the same car.[2]

Sonic Racing

In Sonic Racing, Omochao as an unlockable playable character along with a Neutral Chao, Hero Chao and Dark Chao with their vehicle, the Chao Pod. They become available upon reaching League 4.

Personality

Omochao is a friendly, helpful, fast-talking and cheerful robot who is always willing to provide aid to those who seeks his help. However, his patience has its limits when it comes to people who are roughhousing with him. Unlike normal Chao, Omochao is able to talk in regular language, though he exhibits a verbal tic (in Japanese): he nearly always adds "Chao" to the ends of his sentences.

Powers and abilities

Omochao has extensive knowledge of just about any subject in the universe. He is also one of the few, if not only individual who can understand the language of Animals.[3] However, he is not omniscient, as he cannot predict future outcomes and can still fall for deception.

With the propeller coming out of his head, Omochao can achieve flight. He can as well survive many injuries, including being scorched by the Vulcan Gun, and being used as weapon to throw at enemies.

As seen during Dodon Pa's Grand Prix, Omochao also has excellent skills when it comes to driving and racing in racecars like the Chao Pod.

Trivia

  • Omochao's name is a portmanteau of the Japanese word "omocha" (玩具? lit. "toy"), and "Chao".
  • In Sonic Adventure 2, there is a hidden audio file of Omochao saying Dr. Eggman's mustache is fake.
  • Omochao appears in LEGO Dimensions in the "Sonic Dimensions" level and Sonic the Hedgehog Adventure World. His dialogue in this game, and the way the characters react to it, seems to be a parody of how he was viewed as annoying and unhelpful by many players in Sonic Adventure 2.
  • In an unused line in Sonic Adventure 2, Omochao says he wants to be a real Chao.

Omochao in the Chao Garden

Omochao in chao garden

Omochao's stats in Sonic Adventure 2.

  • In Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, and Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, Omochao can be brought to the Chao Garden using Action Replay, or another cheat device. Unlike his normal self, he will have a wind-up key, not a propeller. It should also be noted that this uses the model for races, karate, and caves. The player has to activate the master code and then enter the subsequent code:
    • Master Code: RRYU-KPMJ-2RG97 / 1JHA-F9UH-NEZ98
    • Code: WNB5-GWEW-U4JOP / UUH7-P89F-K2602 / 54GM-2PVC-MGZDT
  • In the Chao Garden, Omochao acts like a normal Chao; but he will replace the player's first hatched Chao on the slot A Memory Card. There is no way to change the model back unless the player turn off the console without saving.
