No, you're right. If even one person is spared...it's worth it to me.

— Nite the Owl, Sonic the Hedgehog Annual 2020

Nite the Owl[2] is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing. He is an anthropomorphic owl and the radio host of K-TBR 199.2 in Sunset City.

Concept and creation[]

Nite was designed by Evan Stanley. The main inspiration for his character was Clint McElroy, an American podcaster, comic book writer and radio personality.[1]

Appearance[]

Nite is a light brown and cream feathered rotund, anthropomorphic owl. He has black eyes with yellow sclera, a short orange beak, yellow feet and brown upward arrow designs on his belly. For attire, he wears red rimmed glasses, a red, orange and yellow striped scarf, black and gray headphones and red pointed shoes.

History[]

Sonic Learns to Drive[]

On a seemingly normal morning, Nite began his shift on K-TBR 199.2 with the morning parliament, followed by a traffic update featuring problems caused by Sonic. Not long after, Nite promised the listeners that the station would soon go live with their coverage of Mr. Munch-Um's road rally. However, he would soon announce that the road rally had been postponed due to an attack on the city by Dr. Eggman. Afterward, Nite reported that he would play the Chao Chaos's latest hit, "Chili Dog Rhapsody".[3]

Darkest Hour[]

One morning at the K-TBR 199.2 radio station, Nite was beginning his show, playing some music for his listeners and requested for them to call them if they wished. While Don complained about having to clean up for another night, Nite told him that he was providing a vital service by keeping the station clean. When he asked where Sunset City would be without his "dulcet" tones riding the airwaves, Don replied that he thinks that they would be better off. Nite soon received his first call from a woman named Gala, who was being chased after by people who appeared to be sick and metallic; before Nite could get more information, the woman was abruptly cut off. Nite and Don listened to several more similar phone calls into the night. Don decided that they should take his truck to escape the city; however, Nite wanted to stay for the people. Don snapped, stating that he was not waiting around to get killed by monsters because of his great sense of pride and told him to stay if he wanted, adding that he guaranteed that the people will not help him. After Don left, Nite got a new call from a representative of the Restoration and explained to Nite about the current pandemic of the Metal Virus turning civilians around the world into Zombots. According to the representative, they were setting up a safe house in the city at the Grand Gold Flicky Hotel and they needed to get word out to the survivors; as K-TBR 199.2 was the final station in the area still broadcasting, people were listening to him and he was needed to help them. The owl asked if him reading the Restoration's emergency instructions would really help to which the representative stated that it was the only chance they had. Understanding the issue, Nite stated that even if one person was spared, it was worth it to him.[2]

Nite confirmed that he got the info that was sent to him but mentioned that he was not sure how he would be able to hold up out where he was. Soon, Don returned and said that he had gotten some supplies from back out. He told the owl to concentrate on talking while he made sure nothing got into the station. Nite began speaking once again to his listeners, telling them that the Restoration was helping to gather people at the Grand Gold Flicky Hotel. If they could not reach there, they should call into the station to let the Restoration know where to find them. Before Nite could say their number, he was interrupted by a loud banging from Don hammering in the boards. Nite asked Don to keep it down as he was trying to save lives, only for the rooster to reply that he was trying to save him and hammers did not come with a mute button.[2]

Trial by Fire[]

After the Zombot apocalypse was over, Nite would watch Charmy at the request of Espio and Vector. He also allowed Charmy to attend a nightly broadcast. When Vector and Espio later came back for Charmy, Nite informed the group about the recent chaos in Central City, which he thought they would like to investigate.[4]

Personality[]

Nite is a cheerful and slightly cheeky individual, who enjoys his job at the K-TBR 199.2 radio station. He is quite the optimist and has a strong will to help people however he can. However, he can get flustered easily when faced with difficult situations. He is also known to have a slight drawl when he speaks.[2]

Relationships[]

Don the Rooster[]

Nite and Don are in a romantic relationship,[5][6] Though Don is quite pessimistic and not the biggest fan of the owl's show, Nite still manages to joke around with him. Don's patience has been tried before with Nite and has yelled at him for it. Nonetheless, deep down, Don cares for him as well. He is similarly willing to make sacrifices for Nite and joke around in a good atmosphere.[2]

Friends/allies[]

Trivia[]

  • Nite's name is a pun on the term "night owl", a person who tends to stay up until late at night, or the early hours of the morning. This term was based on how most owls are nocturnal creatures.
  • Initially, the artist Mauro Fonseca decided to give Nite a different look in the Sonic the Hedgehog 30th Anniversary Special, since the comic was set in the Classic Sonic era. However, due to a lack of time, Fonseca did not ask Sega for their approval, leading to the page being rejected and having to be redrawn.[7]
