The Nintendo Switch 2 is the second hybrid video game console created by Nintendo. It serves as the eighth and upcoming home console for the company, succeeding the Nintendo Switch. It was first revealed on January 16, 2025 and released worldwide on June 5, 2025.
The Nintendo Switch 2 functions the same as the original Nintendo Switch. Which comes with a bigger screen (7.9 inches), some bigger and attachable Joy-Cons, a chat button on the side of the Joy-Cons, a USB-C charging port, a 3.5mm headphone jack and different kickstand compared to the original.[5] As well as support for up to 4K 120FPS HDR, with 256GB of storage.
However, unlike the original console, the Nintendo Switch 2 will be backwards compatible with most Switch games, but it is specified that some Switch games "may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2". This will be through Virtual Game Cards that have the label named "Switch 2 Editions", supporting the concept of enhanced Switch games on the Switch 2.[6] As of April 2025, all Sonic the Hedgehog games are able to be started on the console.[7][8][9]
The console is set to launch with an enhanced version of Sonic X Shadow Generations with upgraded visuals at the same price of the other versions.[10][11] It is separate from the normal version of the game from it's predecessor. Unlike other enhanced versions of Nintendo Switch games on the Nintendo Switch 2, Sonic X Shadow Generations is unable to be upgraded from the Switch version to the Switch 2 release.[12]
