Newtrogic High Zone (ニュートロジックハイゾーン[1] Nyūtorojikku Hai Zōn?), also known as Carnival Island[2] and the Island of Miracles (奇跡の島[3] Kiseki no Shima?), is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is an island located in the South Sea on earth. The island emerged from the sea months after the conclusion of the Death Egg saga by the Master Emerald's Pillar, which attracted Dr. Eggman due to its connection to the Rings and the Master Emerald itself. After the doctor's takeover, the island was transformed into a gigantic playland that served as the scientist's research base. However, his plans to harness the Rings' energy were thwarted by a team of heroes led by Knuckles.

History[]

Knuckles' Chaotix[]

In Knuckles' Chaotix, a few months after the Angel Island incident, Newtrogic High Zone (unnamed at this point) emerged from the southern sea of earth due to tectonic movements created by the power of the Master Emerald Pillar.[1]

Originally a mere rock, the energy of the Pillar rapidly transformed the island into a green paradise. Curious about its nature, Knuckles headed to the island. In the meantime, Dr. Eggman, who had already discovered the island, found a Ring with ancient texts inscribed on it, from which he learned that the island was once part of a lost civilization. He later found a larger Ring, resembling the ones on the Floating Island, which could guide him to a "power stone" which was already moved to the Floating Island by the gods. Eggman also learned that the large Ring had a mysterious space filled with Pillar energy, which had been turned into six Chaos Rings. He soon realized that, if he could figure out the secrets of the special Ring, he would be able to summon the Master Emerald. With that in mind, he began turning the island into a large resort he dubbed "Newtrogic High Zone".[1]

Later, various individuals arrived at Newtrogic High Zone of their own accord: Espio the Chameleon went to investigate;[4] Mighty the Armadillo happened to come across the island while adventuring;[3] Vector the Crocodile came under the belief that the island's appearance was a miracle of God;[3] and Charmy Bee traveled to the island to search for a new flower.[5] However, they were all kidnapped by Eggman at some point. By the time Knuckles arrived near the island, Eggman had crystalized the Chaos Rings' energy into artificial "Dark Rings" successfully and had developed a Ring Power to generate a space-time connection between the Rings.[1] After saving Espio at the nearby Isolated Island, Knuckles rescued the rest of Eggman's prisoners, as well as Heavy and Bomb, two Eggman robots who had supposedly abandoned the doctor. Traveling through Newtrogic High Zone, the group managed to gather the Chaos Rings and defeat Eggman numerous times. Eventually, they had a showdown with Metal Sonic, whom they defeated. After that, however, Eggman used the energy of a Dark Ring to restore a damaged Metal Sonic, transforming him into Metal Sonic Kai,[6] who battled the heroes. In the end however, Metal Sonic Kai was defeated, thus ending Eggman's operations in Newtrogic High Zone.

Various locations of Newtrogic High Zone, from Knuckles' Chaotix.

  • Botanic Base: The island's most natural attraction is this giant greenhouse, filled with oddly geometric trees, and a jungle of hostile flora.
  • Speed Slider: A roller coaster reminiscent of Casino Night and Carnival Night Zone, Speed Slider is the fastest attraction in Knuckles' Chaotix. The level moves all the way to a confrontation with Dr. Eggman on his carousel.
  • Amazing Arena: At the start of this stage, the player is in the dark, but once the light switch is hit, Amazing Arena turns bright and colorful. If the player fails to locate it, the stage starts all over again.
  • Techno Tower: A futuristic-styled tower that the player must climb. In Level 5, the player can hop on a drill machine that burrows through solid walls.
  • Marina Madness: A cruise-themed attraction with, curiously, no water. The player must jump from ship to ship to complete this level while dodging flying fish and sailing stingrays.
  • World Entrance: Between each stage the player visits the World Entrance. Here, one can choose to end the game, select a new partner, and/or choose a new stage. It is also home to the final boss battles.

The Happyland Amusement Park, from Knuckles' Chaotix.

In the Pre-Super Genesis Wave timeline of the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Newtrogic High Zone is loosely adapted into the Happyland Amusement Park, an area which is based on Carnival Island's description in the US Knuckles' Chaotix manual.

The Happyland Amusement Park was built on Angel Island during the First Robotnik War by Renfield the Rodent, who had been hired by Dr. Robotnik to capture the Knothole Freedom Fighters as part of Operation: Castaways. Although briefly successful, the plan would ultimately be thwarted by the efforts of the newly-formed Chaotix.[7] Renfield later re-opened the park, only for it to subsequently come under inspection of the Echidna Security Team for its usage of the Lemon Sundrop Dandelion drug on its Chili Dogs.[8] Following the First Robotnik War, Renfield would be arrested under unknown circumstances, leaving his Happyland Amusement Park abandoned.[9][10]

Trivia[]

  • Early prototypes of Knuckles' Chaotix feature artwork of Newtrogic High Zone in the Sega logo intro. This was replaced with a normal space background in the final game for unknown reasons.
  • In the western manuals for Knuckles' Chaotix Newtrogic High Zone (referred to as "Carnival Island") is implied to be the same location as Angel Island, being described as an island powered by a "Power Emerald" which is guarded by Knuckles. This implication contradicts the events depicted in the Japanese manual, and would eventually be dropped entirely along with other elements of the early Sonic canon.
