Maria Robotnik, the most well-known victim of N.I.D.S., from Sonic the Hedgehog #124.

Neuro-Immuno Deficiency Syndrome,[1] also known as N.I.D.S.,[2] is a subject that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. It is a rare, incurable and potentially fatal disease.[2]

Description

Not much is known about Neuro-Immuno Deficiency Syndrome, although it appears to be a disease that a person develops rather than contracts; Buns Rabbot got N.I.D.S. when it developed in her spine. It also appears to compromise a person's immune system.[2]

History

Professor Gerald Robotnik set out to find a cure for N.I.D.S. after his granddaughter Maria developed it, and used the United Federation's Project Shadow as a means of doing research. Unfortunately, the termination of the project by the government meant that no cure was ever developed.[1][3] Others have tried to cure N.I.D.S. in recent years; Dr. Ivo Kintobor of Moebius successfully made a medical suit that stopped the disease from progressing with a stasis field, but forced the victim to stay in the suit.[2]

Trivia

  • This disease could be based on HIV/AIDS (human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), a real-life infectious disease.
