Mushroom Hill (マッシュルームヒル Masshurūmu Hiru?), also known as Mushroom Hill Zone (マッシュルームヒル ゾーン[2] Masshurūmu Hiru Zōn?), is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mushroom forest located on Angel Island.
Description[]
Mushroom Hill is a valley on Angel Island that is blessed with greenery.[2] This location is mostly a forest area filled with extremely tall and straight trees with brown bark and lush tree crowns. However, it is best known for the huge, multicolored mushrooms that grow there.[2] While some of these local mushrooms are small, most of them are colossal in size, with the largest of them being at the size of buildings. The soil here is also olive green-colored with diagonal lines on it.
History[]
Games[]
Sonic 3 & Knuckles[]
In Sonic & Knuckles, and the lock-on game Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Mushroom Hill was amongst the Zones on the Floating Island that were invaded by Dr. Robotnik while he was trying to repair his Death Egg, filling the area with traps and Badniks to stop Sonic when he would arrive on the island.[3]
After making the Death Egg fall back to the Floating Island, Sonic and Tails ended up in Mushroom Hill. There, they found Knuckles leaving from a hidden passageway. When the echidna was gone, the duo entered the passageway, leading them to Hidden Palace Zone, only to return back to Mushroom Hill after a brief moment.[4] After traversing through the Zone and overcoming several traps and a Hey Ho, the two found Robotnik in the Egg Scrambler. After his defeat, the doctor escaped to the Flying Battery, which was passing by. Fortunately, the heroes were able to infiltrate the blimp too and continue their adventure.
At some point, Knuckles visited Mushroom Hill after traversing through Launch Base. There, he found an Eggrobo in the Egg Scrambler. After defeating the robot, Knuckles was able to enter the Flying Battery when the airship was passing by.
Sonic the Fighters[]
In Sonic the Fighters, Mushroom Hill is the arena in which Espio is fought.
Sonic Generations[]
In the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations, an incarnation of Mushroom Hill from somewhere in spacetime got transported to White Space where it was drained of color and life.
Mushroom Hill was the third area Modern and Classic Sonic paid a visit to after ending up in White Space. By speeding through Mushroom Hill, the Sonics were able to fix space, thereby restoring the Zone from its lifeless state. When the Time Eater later got destroyed, Mushroom Hill was seemingly returned to its rightful place.

Books and comics[]
Archie Comics[]
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Mushroom Hill Zone (called Mushroom Hills) was originally a Zone on Angel Island. It was first visited by Sonic and Tails, who battled the Hey Ho there.
After the Super Genesis Wave re-wrote history, Mushroom Hill Zone became a permanent Zone located on Angel Island. The alien Eclipse the Darkling eventually crashed here after the New Black Comet was destroyed.
Sonic the Comic[]
In the Sonic the Comic series published by Fleetway Editions, Mushroom Hill Zone appears as a Zone on the Floating Island. The entire population of the Emerald Hill Zone was temporarily relocated to the Mushroom Hill Zone in order to protect them from Dr. Ivo Robotnik's tyranny. There, they made themselves homes out of the Zone's giant mushrooms. After Robotnik's dictatorship over Mobius was toppled, the Emerald Hill Folk would leave Mushroom Hill Zone for their home.
IDW Publishing[]
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing, with Angel Island at peace, Knuckles was relaxing in Mushroom Hill Zone, until the blue Chaos Emerald was discovered out in the open by a local Pocky. Said Chaos Emerald drew the attention of Metal Knuckles, who had been sent by Heavy King to retrieve it. Knuckles engaged Metal Knuckles in combat, but was forced to allow him to escape with the Chaos Emerald after he chopped down an entire giant mushroom, which, had Knuckles not stopped, would have crushed several animals. Knuckles soon after left Mushroom Hill Zone in pursuit of Metal Knuckles.[5]
Trivia[]
