The Motobug[1] (モトラ[2] Motora?, lit. "Motora"), also spelled as Moto Bug,[3][4] is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, ladybug-based Badnik model created by Dr. Eggman, and the counterpart of the Moto Bug from an alternate dimension set in the recent past.

Appearance

Based on real-world ladybugs, Motobugs have round red body armor with vents covering their backs and blue faces which come together with their bodies in an almost spherical shape. They also have cartoony black eyes, two white mandibles, and thick yellow antennae. Their source of locomotion is reliant on the simple wheel mechanism located in their undercarriages. A small engine with an exhaust pipe on both sides of their rear propels their wheels across the ground. They also have short arms with yellow forearms and a single claw at the tip.

In Sonic Mania Plus' Encore Mode, Motobugs look almost the same, except that their bodies have an orangish tone and their eyes have yellow sclerae.

Game appearances

Sonic Generations

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, the Motobugs appear as enemies in Green Hill Act 1. In gameplay, they patrol a small area moving back and forth. Upon spotting Classic Sonic, however, they will jump in one spot before revving up their wheels and starting to charge into Classic Sonic in order to damage him. However, they can easily be dodged by jumping over them. A Motobug is similarly easily destroyed with a Spin Attack-related move.

In the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations, the Motobug serve as enemies in Green Hill Act 1 as well. In gameplay, they move back and fourth within the area they patrol. When they spot Classic Sonic however, they will rev up before trying to charge into him in order to inflict damage. Otherwise, they are easily destroyed with a Spin Attack-related move.

Sonic Mania

In Sonic Mania, and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, Motobugs are enemies found in both Acts of Green Hill Zone. In gameplay, they only move back and forth, but they will attempt to chase the playable character if they see them. However, they move very slowly. Other than that, the Motobugs are relatively harmless and can only hurt the playable character if the latter moves directly into them. Otherwise, Motobugs can easily be destroyed by attacking them with a Spin Attack-related move. Doing so will release the Animals inside of them and award the player with 100 points.

Various destroyed Motobugs also make cameo appearances in the trash heaps in Flying Battery Zone. A Motobug, Jimmy, also serves as the Heavy Rider's steed.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing, Moto Bugs are the counterparts of the Motobugs from another dimension set in the recent past. Like their counterparts, they are Badniks that assist Dr. Eggman, with a past virtually identical to their video game counterparts', up until after the events of Sonic Mania.
