The Motobug is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. It is a mass-produced, ladybug-based Badnik model created by Dr. Eggman, and one of the earliest Badnik models the doctor has employed.

History[]

Past[]

Created by Dr. Eggman, the Motobugs were first used during the doctor's takeover of Mobotropolis to attack the fleeing citizens and harass the inhabitants of Knothole Village in the time that followed.[1][2] They were later used by the doctor during an incident on South Island[3] and later on at the start of an incident involving the Time Eater.[4][5] Months after those incidents, Eggman would re-savage the Motobugs for a new plan that was thwarted by Sonic.[6]

Ellidy's Motobug

A number of Motobugs were left behind on Isolated Island following Eggman's failed operation there, and were modified by Dr. Ellidy to help him on the island and protect the area.[7] Several older Motobug models were also employed by Breezie the Hedgehog, some repurposed to pick up litter.[8]

More recently, Motobugs were used by Dr. Eggman again when he built a massive amusement park in space to harness the Wisps.[9] Shortly afterward, on Sonic's birthday, some of the earliest Motobug models made were kidnapped by the Time Eater and sent to a past version of Green Hill Zone.[4][5]

Worlds Collide[]

Fighting Robots

A Moto Bug briefly teamed up with a Mettaur when Dr. Eggman and Dr. Wily made a bet to see which robot would take down Dr. Light first. However, both robots had walked into each other, and thus began to fight each other instead. The robots would eventually destroy each other and Dr. Light would make a transmitter from their parts.[10]

Shattered World Crisis[]

Act Two[]

Eggman soon made new Motobug models to safeguard his refinery and amusement park, Eggman Land. When it was taken over by Walter and Wendy Naugus, the Motobugs were crystallized and forced to fight for them against Eggman and his Egg Bosses.[11] Some were destroyed but others were recovered when Eggman had won and forced Wendy to release her control on his robots.[12]

The Eggman Land Motobugs were powered by Dark Gaia energy due to Eggman's Summoning Spire, no longer needing to be powered by mobini. They were soon used in combat against the Freedom Fighters when they attacked Eggman Land.[13]
