The Moto Bug is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing. It is a mass-produced, ladybug-based Badnik model created by Dr. Eggman.

Appearance
The Moto Bugs resemble robotic versions of the typical ladybug, but much larger. These Badniks have round red body armor with gray spots covering their backs and blue faces which come together with their bodies in a round shape. They also have white eyes with black pupils, two white mandibles, and yellow antennae. Their source of locomotion is reliant on the simple wheel mechanism located in their undercarriages. A small engine with a white exhaust pipe on both sides of their rear propels their wheels across the ground. They also have short arms with yellow forearms and a single claw at the tip.

Basically, the Moto Bugs are mindless and silent drones programmed to follow their leader's every command. On the Forest Ridge Zone Campground, a Motobug that was named Motobud ran into Belle, whom it accidentally knocked out. As it turned out however, Motobud was good-natured, which it showed by dragging Belle away from the fire. As Belle then came to, the Motobug extinguished the fire on Belle's hand. Belle in returned convinced Tangle to not harm the Motobug when she found them. Motobud subsequently came along on Tangle and Belle's search for Ashe and Red Hot, whom they found on the other side of a ravine. As Tangle and Belle began sliding uncontrollably towards the ravine however, Motobud got both of them to ride it, and by working together, they crossed the ravine. Regrouping with Ashe, Motobud tried to make out of the burning forest with the others. However, when a caving tree made its friends fall towards the ravine, Motobud went to check on them. Finding its friends dangling from the edge, the Motobug got knocked into the ravine as well by the caving tree with the others when the cliff's edge gave in. Landing in the river below, Motobud held onto by Tangle's tail as the river took the group to the local campground. Upon arriving there, Belle noticed it had lost one of its antennae along the river. Its appearance also startled Jewel, but Belle and Tangle assured her that Motobud was nice. Motobud would then help Belle rescue campers that got caught up in Jewel's plan to stop the forest fire. Afterward, Motobud was brought to Tails' workshop. As it picked a flower for a new a new antenna, Tails planned to take a look at it to see if they could find a way to make lesser Badniks defy their programming like this Motobug had.
  +
  +
Later, at Tails' Workshop, Motobud watched Sonic, Tails, and Belle conduct experiments on lesser Badniks by broadcasting its non-aggression subroutine to the other Badniks. After the experiment proved a success when the Badniks' attack response was negated, Motobud would celebrate stay outside with Belle. Later at night, however, a global beacon signal would compel the Mogobugs from around the world to travel to Eggperial City. This signal affected Motobud as well. As Motobud tried escaping the workshop, it woke up Sonic, whom it took swipes at when he interrupted it. With Belle affected by the signal as well and attacking Sonic too, Motobud would help Belle pin down Sonic until Tails liberated Belle from the signal while Sonic kept Motobud pinned down. Then, in an attempt to trace the beacon signal, Sonic, Tails, and Belle let Motobud outside and began following it as it headed for Eggperial City. As Motobud got close to Eggperial City however, Belle tried to stop it, which prompted it and the surrounding Motobugs to engage Sonic, Tails, and Belle. In order to keep Motobud from Eggman and save them, Belle was forced to cut Motobud's power. With Motobud shut down, the other Motobugs ceased their attack and resume their match towards Eggperial City. Afterwards, Belle found Mr. Tinker's message for her inside Motobud, whom the trio put away while they headed to Eggperial City.

Some of them have twin Gatling guns mounted on their heads behind what would be antennae, in which case the holes where the antennae would be can be seen in front of and to the sides of the guns. The guns are strong enough to turn a regular Badnik to dust in a matter of seconds. The gun usually has a lesser Badnik controlling it.

Amy Rose, Sonic the Hedgehog #47

History

Sonic Learns to Drive

Several Motobugs eventually came with the other Badniks that Dr. Eggman used to attack an unsuspecting city.[1]

Dr. Eggman's Birthday

MotoBugClassicIDW

A group of Motobugs, from Sonic the Hedgehog 30th Anniversary Special.

When Dr. Eggman's birthday arrived, a Motobug was there with the Badniks who joined Eggman's birthday celebration in his base, despite Eggman's reluctance.[2]

Recent past

BadniksGreenHIllIDW

Motobugs wandering aimlessly around after the disappearance of Eggman, from Sonic the Hedgehog #1.

At some point in the past, Dr. Eggman took many Motobugs to the Lost Hex for "The Lost World Project". They were soon taken over by the Deadly Six after Sonic the Hedgehog unwillingly freed them. Regardless, Sonic soon put a stop to their evil deeds, relinquishing their control of the Motobugs.[3] Later, after Sonic thwarted Eggman in their last encounter, the doctor disappeared while his Motobugs and the rest of his Badnik Horde remained. Without a leader however, the Motobugs were directionless and no longer a unified threat.[4] Even so, they would still randomly attack anyone they came across[5] (although such incidents were more accidental than aggression-based[4]).

During the Chaotix's search for Dr. Eggman, Charmy ended up having some fun with a rogue Motobug at an abandoned Eggman base that he and the Chaotix were investigating.[6]

Fallout!

Eventually, the Motobugs came under the control of Neo Metal Sonic, who made them and the rest of the Badnik Horde more cohesive.[4][7]

Moto Bugs threaten civilians

Soon after, the Motobugs and some other Badniks launched an attack on a small town called Vista View. There, some Motobugs went after some civilians trying to seek safety, only for these Badniks to be destroyed by Sonic after he came to the town. Eventually, the Motobugs tried to escape the town when Sonic and Tails began overpowering their troops. As they neared the town's exit gate however, the Motobugs got cut off when Tails closed the town's gate, which caused them to crash into the gate and get destroyed.[4]

Some time afterward, a larger-than-average battalion of Motobugs sat their sights on attacking Spiral Hill Village. In the sky above the village was a battleship variant of the Buzz Bomber that was dropping Badniks into the village, including the giant variants of the Motobug. Sonic soon after met up with and joined forces with Tangle the Lemur and disposed of some Egg Pawns, but then a giant Motobug with a turret on its head and an Egg Pawn at the helm of its turret appeared and began shooting at Sonic and Tangle. Then, another giant Motobug without guns appeared, causing both Sonic and Tangle to be surrounded by the two giant Badniks as well as more Egg Pawns. Just then, Blaze the Cat made an appearance and disposed of some of the Egg Pawns. After some introductions, the three teamed up to defeat all of the surrounding Badniks, including the battleship variant of the Buzz Bomber that was dropping Badniks into the village as well as its load of Motobugs.[8]

Battle For Angel Island

While undergoing Dr. Starline's memory-restoring procedures, an amnesiac Eggman, who was still a reformed handyman named "Mr. Tinker", would built a Motobug that would be named Motobud that trimmed shrubs in the likeness of Sonic.[9] Knowing that his fate was sealed however, the reformed Eggman left a secret confession for Belle the Tinkerer inside Motobud in hopes that it would make its way to Belle.[10]

Infection

After the Badnik Horde came under the control of Dr. Eggman again (who had regained his memory and old personality), several Motobugs assisted Dr. Starline with clearing out the contents of an Eggman base in Frozen Peak while under the protection of Metal Sonic. With the aid of a wormhole provided by Starline's Warp Topaz, the Motobugs were able to quickly get the base's contents to safety.[11]

Tangle & Whisper

Several Motobugs were provided to Mimic by Dr. Eggman so that he could attack Tangle the Lemur and Whisper the Wolf at the former Diamond Cutters' base. They were transported to the base by a Blowfish Transporter but were knocked into the Clove Sea after Whisper destroyed the docks.[12]

The Last Minute

Some time later, Zavok used his electromagnetic powers to take control of a Motobug in order to demonstrate his powers to Dr. Starline.[13]

Bad Guys

Following the Zombot apocalypse, a group of Motobugs were sent to arrest Dr. Starline when he was trying to take control of Egg Base Sigma. However, these Badniks were destroyed by Starline with his Multi-Tool Heel Spurs. Later in Dr. Starline's repository, Motobugs in service to Starline would work around the base.[14] At some point, one of Starline's Motobugs would be unwillingly driven around by Rough.[15] Not long after, Dr. Starline's Motobugs would move Starline's items into Egg Base Sigma, after the scientist managed to seize the base for himself.[16]

Chao Races and Badnik Bases

Having gathered several used Motobugs in his suite at the White Park Grand Chateau, Clutch would activated them and have them attack Amy, Cream, Gemerl and Belle after they had crossed him. During the fight, Gemerl tore the head off of one of the Motobugs.[17] As the battle continued, Gemerl dealt with more Motobugs by destroying several of them. However, one of the Motobugs managed to hit Gemerl from behind. Fortunately, all the Motobugs were eliminated with the aid of the liberated Chao that Clutch kept imprisoned in his suite.[18]

Imposter Syndrome and Trial by Fire

When Dr. Starline had to conduct tests on Surge and Kit, he had several Motobugs go up against the pair during their test courses at Starline Base Sigma.[19] During the last of these tests on a training course, a number of Motobugs got torn apart by Surge.[20]

IDW46Pre2

Motobud helping out Belle by putting out the fine on her hand, from Sonic the Hedgehog #46.

On the Forest Ridge Zone Campground, a Motobug that was named Motobud ran into Belle, whom it accidentally knocked out.[21] As it turned out however, Motobud was good-natured, which it showed by dragging Belle away from the fire. Finding its friends dangling from the edge, the Motobug got knocked into the ravine as well by the caving tree with the others when the cliff's edge gave in.[22] Landing in the river below, Motobud held onto by Tangle's tail as the river took the group to the local campground. As it picked a flower for a new a new antenna, Tails planned to take a look at it to see if they could find a way to make lesser Badniks defy their programming like this Motobug had.[23]

Tinker's message for her inside Motobud, whom the trio put away while they headed to Eggperial City.[10]

StH50-Badniks

A Motobug and other Badniks surrounding Sonic, Tails, and Belle, from Sonic the Hedgehog #50.

In Eggperial City, a Motobug under Dr. Starline's control found Belle when the latter was hiding from the city's Badniks with a deactivated Metal Sonic. Before it could attack Belle however, Belle reactivated Metal Sonic, who struck down the Motobug. After Dr. Eggman later regained control over his Badniks, the doctor had the Motobugs and other Badniks in Eggperial City surround Sonic, Tails, and Belle.[24]

Powers and abilities

The Motobugs do not possess any special abilities to speak of. However, they are equipped with claws sharp enough to cut shrubs with ease.[8][9]

Variants

Tank variant

TankMotoBug

The giant version of Motobug, from Sonic the Hedgehog #4.

The tank variant of the Motobugs is essentially a giant version of the basic Motobug, being several times larger than the average Egg Pawn. Some of them have twin Gatling guns mounted on their heads behind what would be antennae, in which case the holes where the antennae would be can be seen in front of and to the sides of the guns. The guns are strong enough to turn a regular Badnik to dust in a matter of seconds. The gun usually has a lesser Badnik controlling it.[8]
