Missions[1][2][3] are a gameplay mechanic that appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It refers to a set of tasks that present the player with special objectives to fulfill. Upon completing a Mission, the player may gain a reward in some form of extra game content.
Description[]
Missions in the Sonic the Hedgehog series are additional objectives aside from the main quests that appears in their respective games. A Mission usually takes place in a mode separate from the main stages or in modified versions of existing levels. Generally speaking, when starting a Mission, the player is put into a level with the task of achieving a certain goal or fulfilling a certain condition, which is given to them before beginning the Mission. Such tasks center around the gameplay elements and objectives in the different games, and can be anything from completing a level within a time limit, collecting a specified amount of Rings, defeating a required amount of enemies, etc.
Upon completing a Mission, the player is usually rewarded with additional game content. Typically though, Missions serve to bring the player closer to the full completion of their respective games. Completing one Mission may also be a prerequisite for unlocking new ones. Missions are also usually tailored to a level's theme, and sometimes to the storyline or gameplay style of the characters.

A common Challenge Act for eighteen of them is the Doppelganger Race mission: The while the others focus on the following themes: Speed, Technique, Doppelganger, Friends, Enemy, Item, Ring, Juggle, and Rescue. Like Stages, the player is assigned a Rank for each Challenge Act based on different factors for each Challenge Act. In addition, any Challenge Act the player completes for the first time will cause a Bonus Bell to appear above its Challenge Act Gate.
In the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations, Missions can be accessed via a mode separate from the main game. Missions here are divided across the four games in the compilation, with each of these four sets taking place in their respective games. Additionally, there are eleven additional additional Missions marked with the "Extreme!" prefix that feature the highest difficulty level, which are available in the Premium Start Pack DLC.
Each of the Missions takes place in a chosen Act from among the levels of the games. These acts are tailored to the needs of the Mission, often restricting the player to selected areas with gray blocks. The objectives of each Mission are different as well. Furthermore, each Mission is marked with one to five stars that indicate how difficult the Mission is. Also, for each Mission the player completes, they are given a Rank from C to S, which is based on their performance.
