A young fox with two tails and a loyal friend of Sonic. By spinning his tails, he can fly like a helicopter.

— Description, Sonic Mania manual[2]

Miles Prower (マイルス・パウアー Mairusu Pauā?), also known as Tails (テイルス Teirusu?) or Classic Tails (クラシックテイルス Kurashikku Teirusu?), is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is an anthropomorphic fox cub who is Miles "Tails" Prower's counterpart from another dimension set in the recent past and Classic Sonic's sidekick.

Basically a past version of his mainstream counterpart from his younger days, Tails first appeared during the Time Eater incident where he helped his counterpart and allies foil one of Dr. Eggman's plots before returning to his own universe. Since then, he has continued his adventures alongside Sonic and his other friends.

Tails has the same appearance as Modern Tails before the time of the Chaos incident. He is a young, anthropomorphic fox cub with a unique mutation of two tails instead of one. He has mostly amber-colored fur with white fur around his muzzle, front torso, and the tips of his tails. He also has black eyes. For attire, Tails wears white gloves and red shoes with white toes. His shoes also have white, sock-like cuffs with light blue belt straps just above the ankles.

In the past, Tails was bullied for having two tails. After seeing Sonic run like the wind however, he gained more confidence in himself.[3] Coming to look up to Sonic and idolize him, he would eventually join Sonic on his adventures.[3][4]

Sonic Generations

Classic and Modern Tails explaining their situation to the Sonics, from the console/PC version of Sonic Generations.

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, Tails and Sonic got sucked into White Space by the Time Eater. After Sonic began roaming White Space in his quest to restore the Time Eater's victims, who had been caught in White Space and turned into colorless statues, Tails came across Modern Tails, his future self from another dimension, while Sonic and Modern Sonic (Sonic's own alternate counterpart) passed through a Boss Gate. By the time the Sonics returned, both Modern and Classic Tails had figured out they were all travelling through time and space.

With the Time Eater at large, the Tailses and Sonics teamed up to stop it. While the Sonics worked on restoring their friends and areas, Classic and Modern Tails got them intel on how the Time Eater was ripping space apart, that the Sonics speed was the key to restoring space and time and finally, that the Chaos Emeralds were the Time Eater's weakness, which they set their sights on collecting. When the Tailses and Classic Sonic came to see Dr. Eggman defeated by Modern Sonic in the Egg Dragoon, they saw Eggman being taken by the Time Eater, which confused them since the Sonics said the Time Eater already had kidnapped him.

After getting the Chaos Emeralds and freeing their friends, the Tailses followed the Sonics to the domain of the Time Eater for the final showdown. There, Dr. Eggman and his time-space counterpart, Classic Eggman, revealed themselves as the ones behind the Time Eater in an attempt to erase the Sonics from history so that the doctors would be victorious in the present. When the Sonics were knocked out by the Time Eater, however, the Tailses and their friends cheered them on, allowing them both to transform into Super Sonic. When the Sonics defeated the Time Eater, the Tailses and their friends were sent back to Modern Sonic's world and Sonic's birthday, where Classic Tails would talk with his modern counterpart about various things. During the party, once the time came for Classic Tails and Classic Sonic to return to their world through a Time Hole left behind by the Time Eater, Classic and Modern Tails said their goodbyes to each other as they went their separate ways.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, Eggman set out to re-launch the Death Egg from where it had crash-landed on Angel Island. Having detected the hubbub on the island, Tails and Sonic went to investigate, eventually discovering Eggman's operations. The pair would go on to engage Eggman's forces and Knuckles the Echidna, the guardian of Angel Island who had been tricked into thinking by Eggman that Sonic was out to steal the island's Master Emerald, in battle on several occasions. After making the Death Egg crash on Angel Island again when it tried to re-launch, Tails and Sonic set out to destroy the Death Egg for good, convincing Knuckles about Eggman's true nature along the way. After Eggman then stole the Master Emerald and used it to re-launch the Death Egg, Tails and Sonic would defeat Eggman, destroy the Death Egg and get the Master Emerald back to Knuckles.

Sonic Mania

Sonic and Tails with the Hard Boiled Heavies, from Sonic Mania.

In Sonic Mania, some time after Sonic and Tails saved Angel Island, the duo were relaxing, until Tails picked up a strange energy reading coming from Angel Island, prompting him to convince Sonic to investigate the power source with him.[5] Upon their arrival, they found five Egg-Robos called the Hard Boiled Heavies excavating the island already. The robots soon found a mysterious gemstone called the Phantom Ruby and activated it, causing Tails, Sonic and Knuckles, who was resting nearby, to get teleported away. The trio ended up in Green Hill Zone, along with the newly upgraded Egg-Robos, who retreated with the ruby, leaving Tails and his friends to chase them down.

The trio was eventually attacked by Dr. Eggman and his Death Egg Robot. Even so, they managed to defeat Eggman, causing him to fall into a hole. Following Eggman, the three saw Eggman take the Phantom Ruby from the Hard Boiled Heaves, who had begun to disobey him. Once Eggman obtained the ruby, Tails, Knuckles and Sonic got sent to Chemical Plant Zone by the gem's power. Not set back by their displacement, Tails and his comrades continued their pursuit of Eggman, occasionally clashing with the Hard Boiled Heavies and other foes along the way. Whenever they caught up to Eggman however, the doctor either gave them the slip or sent them away with the Phantom Ruby.

Along the way, Tails, Sonic and Knuckles found out that Dr. Eggman had seized Little Planet for himself. There, Eggman and the Hard Boiled Heavies housed a new base of operations: the Titanic Monarch. Eventually, the trio made their way to the heart of the robotic area where they faced Eggman in his Phantom Egg mech and four of the newly upgraded Phantom Heavies. Despite the odds, the heroes managed to defeat Eggman, resulting in the breakdown of the Titanic Monarch. While Tails and Knuckles managed to escape from Little Planet, Sonic and Eggman were transported to another dimension. Soon after, Little Planet was freed from its chain once again, and Tails and Knuckles smiled upon seeing a star constellation of Sonic appear in the sky as the planet vanished.

Sonic Mania Plus

In Sonic Mania Plus, after Sonic made his return from his latest adventure in another dimension, Tails teamed up with Sonic, Knuckles, Mighty and Ray to keep the Hard Boiled Heavies from harnessing the Phantom Ruby again.

The group was eventually attacked by Dr. Eggman and his Death Egg Robot. Even so, they managed to defeat Eggman, causing him to fall into a hole. Following Eggman, Tails and his friends saw Eggman take the Phantom Ruby from the Hard Boiled Heavies, who again refused to obey him. Once Eggman obtained the ruby, Tails and his group got sent to Chemical Plant Zone by the gem's power. Not set back by their displacement, the heroes continued their pursuit of Eggman, occasionally clashing with the Hard Boiled Heavies and other old foes along the way. Whenever they caught up to Eggman however, the doctor either gave them the slip or sent them away with the Phantom Ruby.

Eventually, Tails and his allies found out that Dr. Eggman had captured Little Planet once again, where he and the Hard Boiled Heavies had rebuilt the Titanic Monarch. Eventually, the heroic group made their way to the heart of the rebuilt Titanic Monarch where they faced Eggman in his Phantom Egg mech and four of the recently re-upgraded Phantom Heavies. Despite the odds, Tails and his group managed to defeat Eggman, resulting in the Phantom Ruby creating a rift that began devouring the Titanic Monarch. Assuming their Super States with the aid of the Chaos Emeralds however, Tails and his group escaped the rift, whereas Eggman got swallowed by it. Afterward, Tails and his friends closed off their adventure with a trip to an ice cream parlor, only for the Heavy King to make an appearance and surprise them with a sundae.

Sonic Mania Adventures

While working on the Tornado on Angel Island, Tails was reunited with Sonic after he returned from his latest adventure. No sooner however, Sonic revealed to Tails via a handheld he had stolen from Eggman that the doctor was after the Chaos Emeralds, and that he already had found four of them. Tails was subsequently left behind when Sonic went to investigate an explosion, much to Tails' disappointment. However, when Sonic was literally sent flying back to him by Eggman, who was currently excavating another Chaos Emerald, Tails convinced Sonic to let him help him. As such, the heroes fought Eggman together. During this fight, Tails saved Sonic when Eggman almost got him. After he and Sonic then brought down Eggman, Tails found the Chaos Emerald Eggman was looking for, and he and Sonic celebrated their victory.[6]

Later on, Tails and Sonic would track Eggman's base of operations down and rush off to find the evil doctor.[7] As they arrived, they were briefly trapped by Metal Sonic and had their Chaos Emeralds taken away. Metal Sonic then used their Emeralds and those provided by Eggman to empower himself and take Sonic on. Fortunately, Tails and Sonic soon found allies in Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel, who would help them fight the evil robot. When they stood to lose though, Tails remembered that he still had Eggman's handheld and had Sonic distract Metal Sonic while he used the handheld to hack the base's traps. In the end, Tails managed to trap Metal Sonic and strip him of the Chaos Emeralds. With Eggman's aid however, Metal Sonic attempted to harness the power of the Master Emerald, which Eggman had procured, to finish off the four heroes. However, the villains were stopped by Knuckles, who took back the Master Emerald. Soon after, Tails found the Tornado and joined Sonic, Mighty, and Ray on a chili dog picnic. Unfortunately for him, he choked on his chili dog.[8]

Tails' profile, from the Xbox 360 version of Sonic Generations.

Tails has many things in common with Modern Tails. A talented, sweet-natured and loyal fox with a positive attitude and a gentle soul,[3] Tails loves to work with machines, and his inventions have helped Sonic many times.[1][9] Despite his great skills however, Tails is very humble about his abilities, never giving them many thoughts.

In the beginning, Tails was timid, quiet, and would often lack self-confidence and courage. However, he began to grow more confident in himself after seeing Sonic run like the wind.[3] Tails is also very supportive of his friends, willing to be by their side no matter how dangerous the situation might be, and will do whatever he can to help them.

Despite his intelligence, Tails has trouble keeping track of confusing matters, presumably as a result of his young age; during the Time Eater incident, he would have a tough time keeping in mind that he had to refer to Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic in plural, and that his future counterparts friends were not his friends.[10][11]

Powers and abilities

Due to a genetic abnormality, Tails is bequeathed with two large, fluffy tails that can twirl together. Notably, he can spin his twin-tails like rotary blades to hover or fly like a helicopter.[2] While in flight, Tails can move around with outstanding agility and enough speed to run at speeds greater than Mach 1,[12] which is at the blistering speed of about 768 mph, and keep up with even Sonic,[7] who can run at supersonic speeds[13] (which ranges from 915-3,840 mph). Tails can also use his tails to propel himself forward while running.

Even without his twin-tails, Tails is still exceptionally fast, being able to both run at super speeds and move with high swiftness.[6][14] In addition, Tails possesses some notable strength, as he can carry Sonic while flying and throw him with enough force to pierce the Egg Mobile[6] and send him flying great distances.

Tails also possesses a genius-level intellect. A skilled inventor and mechanic, his skills rival those of geniuses like Dr. Eggman, who possesses an IQ of 300.[1][4] Noticeably, he has proven himself to be just as intelligent as Modern Tails, namely by having repeatedly come up with conclusions and theories that match Modern Tails',[10][11] while also showing a scientific understanding of matters as complex as time and space. He also has keen vehicle intuition, being able to pilot vehicles like the Tornado and the Egg Mobile with ease.

Tails can also perform the Spin Attack, a technique where he curls into a concussive ball or cutting disk and directs himself at his targets. With it, Tails can shred or burrow through just about any substance given enough speed. In addition, Tails can perform different variants of the Spin Attack, such as the Spin Jump and the Spin Dash.

Super Tails

Main article: Super Tails (Classic)

By harnassing the power of the seven Chaos Emeralds, Tails can enter a Super State, transforming him into Super Tails. In this state, all of his abilities far surpass his normal ones. In addition, he is virtually invulnerable. However, this transformation consumes a lot of energy and requires Rings to be maintained.

Despite being able to fly with his twin-tails, Tails can get tired if he flies for too long.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog is Tails' best friend. They have gone along since they first met, and Tails himself has looked up to Sonic ever since seeing him run like the wind.[3] Both are very well coordinated in battle as well.[8] Also, despite it being common for Tails to get ignored by Sonic, he never loses confidence or faith in him and is willing to do his best to help him out.[6][14]
