Metallic Madness Zone is the eleventh Zone in Sonic Mania. This Zone is a re-imagination of Metallic Madness from Sonic the Hedgehog CD for the Sega Mega-CD.

Overview

Like the original, it is a huge metallic factory made by Dr. Robotnik that is highly protected by death traps and Badniks, such as buzz saws, blades and cages.

Act 1 's appearance is heavily based on the past version of the original Metallic Madness, while Act 2 is heavily based on the present and bad future of the original Metallic Madness.

Story

In their mission to reclaim the Phantom Ruby from Dr. Eggman, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles have returned to Little Planet, which has become Eggman's base of operations. As they pass through the Metallic Madness Zone, the trio overcome Eggman's traps and devious contraptions one after another. However, the evil doctor continues to escape them upon defeat, leaving Sonic and co. with no choice but to follow him to a Zone containing one of his biggest robotic creations yet.

Gameplay

The gameplay in this Zone is the same as the original Metallic Madness. It also involves a new feature that lets the player do plane switching, allowing the playable characters to switch between the foreground and the background for extra platforming

In Act 1, there are still Mother Bombs and moving springs laying around. Also, exclusive to Act 2 is laser that can shrink and regrown the playable character.

Description

Act 1

Act 1's layout is based on the original Metallic Madness's past version, although there are new mechanics never before seen in this Act, such as plane switching between the foreground and the background. The Act is otherwise almost identical to the original, only being different in length and structure.

Act 2

Act 2 features prominent use of Metallic Madness's original plane switching mechanics (which allow the player to be slightly behind the foreground as opposed to far away from it) and a large portion of the Act is intended to be played as a miniature version of the player, shrunk down by the Size Beam. The Act also features an increased amount of small corridor-like areas that can only be traversed while miniaturized.

Bosses

Act 1

Main article: Egg Pistons mk.II
MM mania boss2

The boss of Metallic Madness Zone Act 1.

This boss is a throwback to the final boss in the first game. Eggman will stand inside one of five crushing pistons, with two descending at a time, and the player must strike the piston housing Eggman. Between these phases, four energy balls will be generated by a device on the far wall that will attempt to close in around the protagonist before the pistons once again resume. Hit Eggman enough times and the pistons will change to a more erratic pattern where only one descends at a time but are in near-constant motion. The energy device will be destroyed before this phase begins, meaning the player only has to contend with the pistons.

Act 2

Main article: Gashapandora
MM2 mania boss

The boss of Metallic Madness Zone Act 2.

At the end of Act 2, Eggman chooses to fight a shrunken-down version of the player character using a gashapon-style contraption. To defeat him, the player must spin the dial on the gashapon machine to dispense either a miniaturized version of the Egg Mobile-D that moves around the floor, a miniaturized version of the Marble Zone boss that periodically launches fireballs that cover parts of the arena with flames, or an Amy Rose doll that chases after the player and explodes when it catches them. After the gashapon machine dispenses eight "prizes", the tubes break and Eggman flies away. The player must defeat any "prizes" that they have not defeated already to make Eggman descend once more. In this final phase of the battle, Eggman shoots projectiles at the player in his broken gashapon machine. One more turn of the dial causes Eggman himself to be dispensed from the machine, ending the battle as he runs away in defeat yet again.

Trivia

  • This marks the second time in which Knuckles is playable in a Sonic the Hedgehog CD Zone, the other being Stardust Speedway.
  • In keeping with the nomenclature of Sonic Mania, Metallic Madness is referred to as a "Zone". In Sonic CD, "Zones" are the individual levels that make up a stage (typically referred to as an "Act") and the stages themselves referred to as "Rounds".
  • The music for Act 1 take elements mostly from its original Past version, while the music for Act 2 combines elements from the Present and Bad future version.
  • The boss of the Zones second Act heavily resembles the Botanic Base boss from Knuckles' Chaotix.
  • When the size beam hits Super Sonic, he will have the appearance of Sonic with golden fur along with keeping Sonic's normal animations.
