The Metal Virus is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series published by IDW Publishing. It's an artificial virus that takes a form of substance which transmutates organic matter into metallic.
Description
Appearance
At a microscopic level, the Metal Virus consists of nanobots that resemble bacterlophange and functions similar to it like a virus.
When observed and contained, the virus appears like a gray metallic liquid.
Function
When a living, organic subject comes into contact with the virus, the organic matter of the living subject will transmute into metallic, mechanical like matter. The virus will also rob the subject of their free will and cause aggressive tendencies without direction.
The virus however can only transmute living flora and fauna. It cannot transmute processed or inorganic matter such as food, metal or stone.
History
The Metal Virus was created at some point after Dr. Eggman had his memory restored[1]. He began experimenting with it to see the full extent of its abilities. The first test subject was a flower, which transmutated it into mechanical like appengages. The second test was with Vertebrate specimens. Dr. Eggman covered a Pocky with the Metal Virus, which due to the amount of the substance caused quick transmutation. Some of the virus came into contact with the nearby Picky and began to cause gradual transmutation due to only a small amount of the virus came into contact. Dr. Eggman observed the behavior of the transmutated rabbit as it showed aggression for the Ricky.
For the last experiment, Dr. Eggman demanded the Ricky to pick the transmuted flower and touched various objects with it. The Metal Virus showed no signs of transmutating the objects, but having touched the flower has Ricky begin transmutating at a slow pace.[2]
Trivia
- The transmutation that the virus caused is similar to Roboticization, a reoccuring process seen in the previous Archie Sonic the Hedgehog comics, Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon and Sonic Underground cartoon.
- Through the ability of the virus to propague by touching from a infected being is similar in how Dr. Eggman was once able to roboticize others by touching them in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series published by Archie Comics.
