Field tested and battle hardened! You are my finest creation, Metal Sonic!

Dr. Eggman, Sonic the Hedgehog #12

Metal Sonic is a major antagonist that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing. He is a villainous robot created by Dr. Eggman to rival the skills of Sonic the Hedgehog.

When Dr. Eggman disappeared after the Eggman War, Metal Sonic took over as ruler of the Eggman Empire to conquer the world on behalf of his master, but was defeated by Sonic and the Resistance. However, in the aftermath, he found Dr. Eggman and returned to his services.

Metal Sonic was created in the image of Sonic the Hedgehog, and is thus mostly built of blue metal. He has a yellow circular depression in his chest with a black center, mirroring the peach skin on Sonic's chest. His head has metal fins resembling Sonic's quills, and a pair of triangular "ears." Metal Sonic has a muzzle, shoulder plates, and upper arms, legs, and fingers made out of silvery metal. His palms are black, while the backs of his hands are square yellow plates. His forearms and lower legs are blue metal like his head and torso, and he has red feet with white stripes designed to resemble Sonic's shoes. He has optic sensors with black sclera and red irises.

Metal Sonic was created by Dr. Eggman, and is the doctor's finest creation. One time, he fought Sonic, only to return to Eggman in a badly damaged state, prompting Eggman to repair Metal Sonic personally.[1]

In the recent past, Metal Sonic transformed into Neo Metal Sonic in an attempt to take over the Eggman Empire after he gained an independent personality.[2] After disguising himself as Dr. Eggman, he eventually clashed with Team Heroes in the Egg Emperor mech.[3] Not only did he lose in this battle, but after he was found out to be a fake, he was defeated by Team Heroes and turned back to normal. After this defeat, Eggman repaired Metal Sonic and removed the rebelliousness from his coding.[2] Sonic and Metal Sonic clashed at least once since then.[2]

The Eggman War

Eggman eventually decided to upgrade Metal Sonic to Neo Metal Sonic once again so he could be used as his greatest weapon in the final battle during the war between the Eggman Empire and the Resistance. During his upgrade, Eggman had phantoms of Metal Sonic fight in his place.[2] As an addition to his upgrade, Metal Sonic received Eggman's bio-data, giving him his creator's drive, vision and genius, and had the requirements needed to assume his final form lessened.[2][4] By the time Metal Sonic's upgrade was complete however, the Eggman War was won by the Resistance and Dr. Eggman had vanished.[2]

Determined to make sure the Dr. Eggman's reign remained unbroken, Neo Metal Sonic decided to use Eggman's persona and lead the Eggman Empire, with the intention of conquering the world as Eggman and then find the real doctor so he could hand the control of the world over to him.[2]

Approximately a month after the Eggman Empire lost the Eggman War, Neo Metal Sonic, under the guise of Dr. Eggman, began directing the wild Badnik hordes into attacking villages across the globe in order to lure Sonic and his allies out and make subtle attempts to eliminate them.[3][5][6][7] Along the way, Neo Metal Sonic discovered that the Master Emerald had been left unguarded, which meant he could accelerate his master plan considerably.[6]

The Fate of Dr. Eggman

Eventually, Neo Metal Sonic lost track of Sonic and his allies.[8] Despite this, he began making his next move by having the Egg Fleet move into position for an invasion of Angel Island.[2][9] On his way to join his fleet however, Neo Metal Sonic came across Sonic when the hedgehog invaded his flagship and saw through his Eggman disguise. Neo Metal Sonic subsequently dropped his disguise and indulged Sonic in the events that had transpired as well as his current motives. He then engaged Sonic in battle in hopes of making him tell him where Eggman was. In the end, Sonic managed to escape Neo Metal Sonic, although that did little to deter the robot, who proceeded with his invasion of Angel Island.[2] After taking over the island and securing the Master Emerald for himself, Neo Metal Sonic patiently awaited Sonic's arrival.[10]

Battle For Angel Island

Eventually, Sonic and company discovered that Neo Metal Sonic had turned Angel Island into a flying fortress, and began a liberation attempt. Soon after, Sonic and Knuckles themselves confronted Neo Metal Sonic at the Master Emerald's shrine. In response, Neo Metal Sonic used the Master Emerald to turn into Super Neo Metal Sonic.[11] Super Neo Metal Sonic proceeded to toy with Sonic and Knuckles until Shadow arrived and launched a surprise attack on Super Neo Metal Sonic that reverted him back to Neo Metal Sonic. As he got beaten back by Shadow however, Neo Metal Sonic copied Shadow's biodata. With Sonic and Shadow's biodata and the Master Emerald itself now in hand, Neo Metal Sonic had all he needed to assume his final form. Absorbing his surrounding stronghold, Neo Metal Sonic transformed into Master Overlord.[4]

Master Overlord did battle with Sonic, Knuckles and Shadow before taking them with him to see him crush their allies on an Egg Fleet battleship. While busy dealing with the battleship however, Sonic and co. escaped Master Overlord's grasp and began attacking his body. Sonic's other allies soon after joined the fight and managed to drive Master Overlord towards Angel Island. While he dealt with most of the heroes however, Knuckles removed the Master Emerald from Master Overlord's body and brought it back to Angel Island. This depowered Master Overlord and he returned to his normal form. After that, Metal Sonic's offline body landed on Angel Island where it was found by Sonic and Tails.[12]

Metal Sonic was eventually taken in by Sonic and Tails, with the latter providing enough repairs on him to bring him online. Chained up, Metal Sonic was then awoken upon Sonic's request. Once he saw Sonic, Metal Sonic broke free and tried to attack him, but found himself in too much disrepair to fight. Sonic then offered Metal Sonic a truce and the chance to start a new life since Eggman was out of the picture. Metal Sonic rejected Sonic's offer, however, and ran off. Arriving later in the Final Egg, Metal Sonic found Eggman with Dr. Starline, Orbot, Cubot, Rough and Tumble. At first, Eggman, who had lost his memories and old personality, took pity on Metal Sonic and offered to repair him. Seeing Metal Sonic, however, made Eggman remember his past with him, causing his memories and old personality to resurface. As Eggman established himself as the dominant one among the group of villains, he went to work repairing Metal Sonic while Starline brought him up to speed.[1]

After Rough and Tumble asked Eggman to get another chance to get Sonic after he and Tails defeated them, Metal Sonic stepped up to be permitted a new attempt to defeat Sonic. When Rough told him that he had had his turn, Metal Sonic silenced him.[13] When Starline got assigned to distract Sonic, Metal Sonic would safeguard a Badnik caravan that was moving the content in an Eggman base on Frozen Peak to a new location beyond a portal created by Starline's Warp Topaz. When Sonic and Silver later arrived at the Frozen Peak base, Metal Sonic attacked Sonic and Silver. Ultimately, Metal Sonic got pinned down by Silver, but was then rescued by Starline. After Starline had made his introduction to the heroes, Metal Sonic attacked Sonic and Silver again until Silver telekinetically threw him across the mountain range. By the time Metal Sonic returned, Starline had managed to sent Sonic and Silver away. Confirming afterward that everything was set up, Metal Sonic left the scene through Starline's Warp Topaz portal.[14]

Metal Sonic watches the Metal Virus slip off his finger, from Sonic the Hedgehog Annual 2020.

Metal Sonic walked around the halls of the Faceship alone. After watching a playback of his fight against Sonic and Silver, he walked on and slid his hand on his legs. He soon arrived at Dr. Starline's lab and saw a vat of Metal Virus. He entered the room and stared at it before focusing on a recording of Sonic getting infected with the virus. The robot checked to make sure that the coast was clear and turned back to the vat of Metal Virus. He reached his hand out to the tub but paused. After a moment, Metal Sonic determinedly extended his hand out again and dipped his index finger in the vat of Metal Virus. He lifted it out and looked at the mixture on his finger. However, as the Metal Virus has no effect on things that are already mechanical, it slid off his finger and dropped back down into the vat. The robot stood still, stunned, and stared at his hand. He is soon alerted by the presence of Starline, who asked if his sensors were malfunctioning and told him to get out of his office. Metal Sonic simply walked away, with Starline in disbelief that Eggman's greatest creation is "shambling around" the lab "like a Zombot."[15]

All or Nothing

Starline's attempt to leave with the Warp Topaz is stopped by Metal Sonic, from Sonic the Hedgehog #25.

When Eggman saw that Starline had betrayed him by inviting the Deadly Six onboard the Faceship, he immediately sent Metal Sonic to attack the Zeti. Zavok swiftly used his electromagnetism to take control of Metal Sonic and taunted Eggman on how he forgot about their powers. After Starline failed to take control of the Zeti, Zavok decided to send Metal Sonic after him and Eggman; however, Starline managed to open a portal that he, Eggman and Metal Sonic fell through. When the trio landed on Angel Island, Metal Sonic quickly stood in front of Eggman to protect him from Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy, who were also present on the island. After Eggman explained his situation to Sonic, Espio appeared and told the group that they had just received word from Rouge. On the Rescue Shuttle, Metal Sonic glared at Gemerl. Later, when Starline decided to leave and try to figure out the Metal Virus situation on his own, Eggman had Metal Sonic grab him so that he could remove his Warp Topaz-equipped glove and then had the robot throw him out via a Warp Portal, but not before the doctor fired the platypus.[16]

Soon, Metal Sonic watched Eggman and Tails create the Multi-Portal Generator that would help take the others to fight the different members of the Deadly Six. Later, as Sonic was running on a treadmill, he showed his disappointment in him for choosing to return to Eggman even though he no longer had control over him. Eggman explained to the hedgehog that had programmed Metal Sonic with a demand for battle and conquest which means he would then desire to become dangerous again, no matter what Sonic did. After Eggman finished his talk with the hedgehog, Metal Sonic walked off with the doctor. The robot soon witnessed everyone else head off through the Warp Portals of the Multi-Portal Generator to face the Deadly Six.[17]

Metal Sonic rescues Sonic from a bunch of Zombots, from Sonic the Hedgehog #29.

As the others returned from their mission, Metal Sonic held back the Type-J Extreme Gear, which was carrying a Chaos Emerald as the Babylon Rogues did not return. Metal Sonic then witnessed the fall of the Faceship and Zavok's subsequent transformation into Giant Zavok. The Zeti then began his assault on Angel Island, throwing masses of Zombots and spitting fireballs at the island. With the group surrounded, Sonic asked Metal for his assistance which was backed up by an order from Eggman. Metal Sonic carried Sonic as the two made their way towards Zavok in a desperate attempt to retrieve the final Chaos Emerald. Metal Sonic activated his Black Shield to protect him and Sonic from Zavok's fireball, but as they got closer to emerald embedded in his chest, the Zeti blew out a puff of air and knocked the two to the ground, separating them in the process. Metal Sonic made his way back to Sonic, who was surrounded a group of Zombots and charged into them at high speed, freeing Sonic from the horde. With time running low, the two made one final attempt to get the Chaos Emerald, with Metal Sonic flying Sonic up Zavok's body. As the two made their way up, Zavok activated his electromagnetic abilities to throw Metal Sonic off, leaving Sonic alone. Metal Sonic is last seen getting up from the rubble and watching as Super Silver removes the Metal Virus from the infected with his psychokinesis .[18][19]

Out of the Blue

Metal Sonic was later commanded by Eggman to retrieve Orbot and Cubot from Gemerl after the duo had been discovered. The robot rushed to the duo's aid and impaled Gemerl with his hand. As he tried to fly away, Whisper started shooting at him with her Variable Wispon. The robot quickly used his Black Shield and dropped Gemerl in order to carry Orbot and Cubot. Metal Sonic flew the two robots to the Rescue Shuttle that Eggman had stolen in order to make his getaway. When Eggman detected that Shadow was on their tail, Eggman sent Metal Sonic to slow him down so that he could reach a secure escape altitude. Once the shuttle landed on a cliff, Metal Sonic flew to Shadow and hit him back down a cliff with an elbow. The two struggled with each other, prompting Shadow to deliver a strike with the fire from his rocket skates. Metal Sonic was slightly burned by this but still charged at Shadow. The hedgehog did the same and hit the robot with a Spin Attack. Metal Sonic locked in on Shadow approaching him again and countered his Spin Attacks with his own Spin Attacks. Shadow attempted one more Spin Attack against Metal Sonic, only for the robot to charge up and use the Ring Spark Field to create a burst of energy and push Shadow back down. With his mission complete, Metal flew back to the shuttle and the ship took off.[20]

Imposter Syndrome

Metal Sonic fighting Surge, from Sonic the Hedgehog: Imposter Syndrome #4.

Some time later, Metal Sonic was sent by Dr. Eggman to defend Eggtropolis from an attack by Surge the Tenrec and Kitsunami the Fennec. Ambushing the former, Metal Sonic managed to maintain an advantage over Surge, but Kit soon began to support Surge with his water coils. Soon after, Metal Sonic was trapped in a water bubble by Kit, which Surge then electrocuted with her electricity-based powers. With Metal Sonic shut down from the shock, Surge knocked him down with a tap, claiming that he would never be able to become the real Sonic as she would be the one to replace him.[21]

Metal Sonic is a silent,[14] ruthless, and cold-hearted killing machine. Incredibly intelligent and self-aware for an Eggman robot, Metal Sonic at one point evolved to become an independent, rebellious and power-hungry tyrant willing to betray his own creator and seize the Eggman Empire for himself. However, after his defeat he was stripped of his rebellious coding, turning him into a more obedient robot.[2]

Metal Sonic continues Eggman's reign for his sake, from Sonic the Hedgehog #7.

Nowadays, Metal Sonic is completely devoted to Dr. Eggman and his role of serving the Eggman Empire. After receiving Eggman's bio-data in the form of his genius, visions and ambitions, his loyalty towards his creator and purpose proved to be so great that he chose to step up to lead the Eggman Empire and conquer the world in the doctor's stead and likeness after he went missing to ensure that Eggman's reign remained unbroken. Should the world become his, he would then faithfully hand the empire over to Dr. Eggman. He has also proven to be very grounded in his beliefs: even when in a position of absolute power within the Eggman Empire, Metal Sonic insists that he is only a servant to the Eggman Empire, and that the only one fit to rule it is Eggman himself.[2]

Metal Sonic has an unhealthy obsession with his organic template, Sonic the Hedgehog, whom he refers to as his "double" and "loathsome copy".[2] This contradicting belief stems from the fact that Metal Sonic considers himself the "perfected" version of Sonic the Hedgehog, and therefore more worthy of being the "one, true Sonic" than the real Sonic.[2][12] However, he is deeply aware of some of the features Sonic has that he lacks, such as an organic body. For this reason, Metal Sonic tried to come into contact with the Metal Virus to feel anything, but to no effect, which momentarily stunned him.[15]

Metal Sonic threatens Rough, from Sonic the Hedgehog #13.

In comparison to Dr. Eggman, Metal Sonic is much more subtle in his tactics. Rather than stepping up to claim responsibility whenever he commits something malicious, Metal Sonic tends to operate in the shadows or in a disguise.[5][9] He is similarly not one to prattle loudly about his master plans before they are carried out.[2] Metal Sonic also demonstrated a very calm and enduringly patient demeanor during his time ruling the Eggman Empire.[2][5] This is mainly due to his own arrogance and belief in his supposedly impending victories, as he consider any hiccups in his plans to be temporary failures.[2] He rarely lets his setbacks get to him and he gets no more than mildly annoyed whenever one of his plans does not go as intended.[2][3][5] That does not mean he does not possess a temper however, as he has been known to have episodes of angry outburst whenever something unexpected happens.[2][8]

Powers and abilities

Described as Dr. Eggman's finest creation,[1] Metal Sonic is an exceptional powerful robot capable of going toe-to-toe with Sonic the Hedgehog.[14]

Metal Sonic shares Sonic's super speed, which he can achieve using a powerful turbine-based propulsion system. Plus, by utilizing his turbine, Metal Sonic can achieve high-speed flight in any environment. He also comes equipped with sufficiently sharp claws and articulated joints, allowing him to rotate his torso 360 degrees around.[14] He also possesses incredible strength; he is strong enough to carry at least one person around while in flight, and he is strong enough to break metal chains with ease, even in a weakened state.[1][19]

Metal Sonic also has an external defense system called the Black Shield. With, he can surround himself with a black force-field that can block incoming physical attacks.[19]

Neo Metal Sonic

Neo Metal Sonic, from Sonic the Hedgehog #7.

Through unknown means, Metal Sonic is able to assume an upgraded and more advanced state of himself called Neo Metal Sonic. In this form, Metal Sonic is able to shapeshift, has limitless stamina and enhanced durability, and the ability to fly. He is also able to copy the bio-data of others, allowing him to gain other people's abilities and skills. He is also able to speak, unlike his base form.[14]

Super Neo Metal Sonic
Main article: Super Neo Metal Sonic

By harnessing the Master Emerald's power for himself, Neo Metal Sonic is able to attain a Super State called Super Neo Metal Sonic. In this state, all of Neo Metal Sonic's innate abilities far surpass his normal ones. He is also able to project harmful energy blasts and bolts. Even Sonic and Knuckles together were unable to defeat him in this form.

Master Overlord
Main article: Master Overlord

With the bio-data of Sonic the Hedgehog and Shadow the Hedgehog, and the Master Emerald itself, Neo Metal Sonic is able to transform into a giant, dragon-like robot called Master Overlord. In this state, Metal Sonic is even stronger than his Super Neo Metal Sonic state. Some of the abilities he commands include flight, crystal generation, and immense strength and durability. He is so strong that the entire Resistance (post-Eggman War) were barely able to stop him.

Dr. Eggman

Dr. Eggman is Metal Sonic's creator and master, whom he serves faithfully as his right-hand enforcer in all his endeavors. Eggman is very proud of Metal Sonic and seems to have a degree of affection that he shows to no one else. He similarly gets mad at Sonic whenever he manages to damage Metal Sonic. Eggman also praises Metal for his successes or the victories he almost achieved, from even the small ones like landing a punch on Sonic to the almost successful conquest of Angel Island. He was also the catalyst that allowed Eggman to regain his entire memory and persona while he suffered from amnesia.[1]

In the past, Metal Sonic was rebellious against Eggman and had ambitions to overthrow him, but he has since been stripped of this part of his coding. Since then, he refers to his creator as "Lord Eggman." Metal Sonic's loyalty towards his creator and purpose has proven to be so great that he chose to step up to lead the Eggman Empire and conquer the world in the doctor's stead and likeness after he went missing. Should he have succeeded, he would then hand the empire back over to Eggman. During his master's absence, Metal Sonic persistently searched for him and was ready to comb the ruins of the world in order to find him. Even when in a position of absolute power within the Eggman Empire, Metal Sonic insists that he is the only one fit to rule it is Eggman himself.[2] No matter how many times he is damaged fighting Sonic and his friends, Metal Sonic is always repaired by Eggman thereafter.[1]

Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog is Metal Sonic's organic template, as he was created by Dr. Eggman for the sole purpose of destroying him. Aligning with his one true purpose, Metal Sonic is fiercely determined to defeat Sonic. Even after his constant defeats, Metal Sonic got more and more an unhealthy obsession that make it refers Sonic as his "loathsome copy". This is because he considers himself the "perfected" version of Sonic, and therefore more worthy of being the "one, true Sonic".[2][12]

Despite the kindness Sonic showed him after the battle of Angel Island, the furious Metal Sonic wanted to attack him upon waking up. He subsequently rejected the truce he offered and returned to Eggman, which disappointed Sonic.[1] Sonic would later tell Metal Sonic about how he preferred that he was more like Gemerl or Omega, who broke free from Eggman and started their own lives.[17] He also does not expect them to become friends anytime soon and would accept that they lived apart from one another on opposite sides of the planet.[1] Furthermore, according to Eggman, Metal Sonic's software ensures that his only desire is to destroy Sonic.[17]

Despite their hostility, Metal Sonic is able to aid Sonic upon Eggman's orders if the situation requires it, which is usually when Eggman's life is at stake.[19]
