History[]

Past[]

Metal Sonic was created by Dr. Eggman, and is the doctor's finest creation.

One night, Metal Sonic saved Dr. Eggman in his sleep by keeping a rebellious Heavy King from attacking Eggman. However, Metal Sonic and his fellow Eggman robots later fell under Heavy King's command when he used an override signal to take control of them. As such, Metal Sonic helped throw Eggman out of his base in Winter Caverns Zone. Afterward, he was assigned by Heavy King to help find the seven Chaos Emeralds which the latter needed to conquer the world.[2]

Classic Era[]

Seasons of Chaos[]

Sonic30OneShotPre2

Metal Sonic in Spring Valley Zone, from Sonic the Hedgehog 30th Anniversary Special.

Tracking a Chaos Emerald to Spring Valley Zone, Metal Sonic swiped it in front of Sonic, Tails and Amy. Then, in an uncharacteristic move, Metal Sonic ignored Sonic's invitation to a showdown and took off. He immediately after escaped the pursuing trio by repelling Sonic when he tried to catch up to him. After delivering the Chaos Emerald to Heavy King, Metal Sonic headed out once more and found another Chaos Emerald. Afterward, he hurried to Autumn Forest Zone to acquire the final Chaos Emerald. After getting it, Metal Sonic flew away from Eggman as he tried using a jamming signal to free Metal Sonic from Heavy King's control. However, Eggman was intercepted by Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, and Metal Sonic once again took off while ignoring Sonic's offer to challenge him.[2]

After getting the last Chaos Emeralds to Heavy King, Metal Sonic and Metal Knuckles would engage Sonic and his crew when they arrived in Winter Caverns Zone to stop Heavy King. Metal Sonic fought Mighty ferociously until Eggman overrode the signal Heavy King used to control Metal Sonic. Metal Sonic immediately after turned his attention to Sonic, but Eggman made him stop and team up with Sonic's crew. The group proceeded to confront Heavy King inside the base. There, Metal Sonic seemingly took an interest in Heavy King's proclamations of becoming a "metallic overlord", but Eggman told him not to not get any ideas and had him help the others battle Heavy King, who used the power of the seven Chaos Emeralds to battle Metal Sonic and the others. In the end though, Heavy King was defeated after Metal Sonic and the others took the Chaos Emeralds back while Sonic distracted Heavy King. Heavy King then returned to Eggman's side, who ordered Metal Sonic, Heavy King and Metal Knuckles to take the Chaos Emeralds from Sonic's crew. However, the group had already left with the Chaos Emeralds. Metal Sonic subsequently collapsed, as all of his energy had been spent from his recent excursions.[2]

Dr. Eggman's Birthday[]

Some time later, a damaged Metal Sonic got stored away in a stasis tube inside Dr. Eggman's base.[3]

Amy's 30th Anniversary Special[]

Metal Sonic would be tasked by Eggman to capture Sonic and friends. He managed to capture many of them an imprison them in Capsules. He went out to capture Amy in Flower Field Zone, but could not find her. While looking for her, Metal found Fang, Ray, and Bark had been freed from their capsules and a transport boat had been stolen. He flew to Eggman Island where the Capsules were and found Amy, Bark, and Ray. Bark fought Metal and Amy and her friends freed everyone in the warehouse. Amy called out Metal and he chased after her. When he tried to grab Amy, she ducked and Metal went inside a capsule, where Fang closed it on him. Later, Eggman arrived enraged at everyone being set free.[4]

Modern Era[]

Pre-Eggman War[]

One time, he fought Sonic, only to return to Eggman in a badly damaged state, prompting Eggman to repair Metal Sonic personally.[1]

Sonic beats Metal Sonic

Metal Sonic defeated by Sonic, from Sonic the Hedgehog #7.

In the recent past, Metal Sonic transformed into Neo Metal Sonic in an attempt to take over the Eggman Empire after he gained an independent personality.[5] After disguising himself as Dr. Eggman, he eventually clashed with Team Heroes in the Egg Emperor mech.[6] Not only did he lose in this battle, but after he was found out to be a fake, he was defeated by Team Heroes and turned back to normal. After this defeat, Eggman repaired Metal Sonic and removed the rebelliousness from his coding.[5] Sonic and Metal Sonic clashed at least once since then.[5]

The Eggman War[]

IDWMetalUpgrade

Metal Sonic getting upgraded into Neo Metal Sonic, from Sonic the Hedgehog #7.

Eggman eventually decided to upgrade Metal Sonic to Neo Metal Sonic once again so he could be used as his greatest weapon in the final battle during the war between the Eggman Empire and the Resistance. During his upgrade, Eggman had phantoms of Metal Sonic fight in his place.[5] As an addition to his upgrade, Metal Sonic received Eggman's bio-data, giving him his creator's drive, vision and genius, and had the requirements needed to assume his final form lessened.[5][7] By the time Metal Sonic's upgrade was complete however, the Eggman War was won by the Resistance and Dr. Eggman had vanished.[5]

Determined to make sure the Dr. Eggman's reign remained unbroken, Neo Metal Sonic decided to use Eggman's persona and lead the Eggman Empire, with the intention of conquering the world as Eggman and then find the real doctor so he could hand the control of the world over to him.[5]

Fallout[]

Approximately a month after the Eggman Empire lost the Eggman War, Neo Metal Sonic, under the guise of Dr. Eggman, began directing the wild Badnik hordes into attacking villages across the globe in order to lure Sonic and his allies out and make subtle attempts to eliminate them.[6][8][9][10] Along the way, Neo Metal Sonic discovered that the Master Emerald had been left unguarded, which meant he could accelerate his master plan considerably.[9]

The Fate of Dr. Eggman[]

Eventually, Neo Metal Sonic lost track of Sonic and his allies.[11] Despite this, he began making his next move by having the Egg Fleet move into position for an invasion of Angel Island.[5][12] On his way to join his fleet however, Neo Metal Sonic came across Sonic when the hedgehog invaded his flagship and saw through his Eggman disguise. Neo Metal Sonic subsequently dropped his disguise and indulged Sonic in the events that had transpired as well as his current motives. He then engaged Sonic in battle in hopes of making him tell him where Eggman was. In the end, Sonic managed to escape Neo Metal Sonic, although that did little to deter the robot, who proceeded with his invasion of Angel Island.[5] After taking over the island and securing the Master Emerald for himself, Neo Metal Sonic patiently awaited Sonic's arrival.[13]

Battle For Angel Island[]

Eventually, Sonic and company discovered that Neo Metal Sonic had turned Angel Island into a flying fortress, and began a liberation attempt. Soon after, Sonic and Knuckles themselves confronted Neo Metal Sonic at the Master Emerald's shrine. In response, Neo Metal Sonic used the Master Emerald to turn into Super Neo Metal Sonic.[14] Super Neo Metal Sonic proceeded to toy with Sonic and Knuckles until Shadow arrived and launched a surprise attack on Super Neo Metal Sonic that reverted him back to Neo Metal Sonic. As he got beaten back by Shadow however, Neo Metal Sonic copied Shadow's biodata. With Sonic and Shadow's biodata and the Master Emerald itself now in hand, Neo Metal Sonic had all he needed to assume his final form. Absorbing his surrounding stronghold, Neo Metal Sonic transformed into Master Overlord.[7]

IDWMetalDefeat

Metal Sonic defeated, from Sonic the Hedgehog #11.

Master Overlord did battle with Sonic, Knuckles and Shadow before taking them with him to see him crush their allies on an Egg Fleet battleship. While busy dealing with the battleship however, Sonic and co. escaped Master Overlord's grasp and began attacking his body. Sonic's other allies soon after joined the fight and managed to drive Master Overlord towards Angel Island. While he dealt with most of the heroes however, Knuckles removed the Master Emerald from Master Overlord's body and brought it back to Angel Island. This depowered Master Overlord and he returned to his normal form. After that, Metal Sonic's offline body landed on Angel Island where it was found by Sonic and Tails.[15]

Metal Sonic was eventually taken in by Sonic and Tails, with the latter providing enough repairs on him to bring him online. Chained up, Metal Sonic was then awoken upon Sonic's request. Once he saw Sonic, Metal Sonic broke free and tried to attack him, but found himself in too much disrepair to fight. Sonic then offered Metal Sonic a truce and the chance to start a new life since Eggman was out of the picture. Metal Sonic rejected Sonic's offer, however, and ran off. Arriving later in the Final Egg, Metal Sonic found Eggman with Dr. Starline, Orbot, Cubot, Rough and Tumble. At first, Eggman, who had lost his memories and old personality, took pity on Metal Sonic and offered to repair him. Seeing Metal Sonic, however, made Eggman remember his past with him, causing his memories and old personality to resurface. As Eggman established himself as the dominant one among the group of villains, he went to work repairing Metal Sonic while Starline brought him up to speed.[16]

Infection[]

MetalThrowsSilver

Metal Sonic fighting Silver, from Sonic the Hedgehog #14.

After Rough and Tumble asked Eggman to get another chance to get Sonic after he and Tails defeated them, Metal Sonic stepped up to be permitted a new attempt to defeat Sonic. When Rough told him that he had had his turn, Metal Sonic silenced him.[17] When Starline got assigned to distract Sonic, Metal Sonic would safeguard a Badnik caravan that was moving the content in an Eggman base on Frozen Peak to a new location beyond a portal created by Starline's Warp Topaz. When Sonic and Silver later arrived at the Frozen Peak base, Metal Sonic attacked Sonic and Silver. Ultimately, Metal Sonic got pinned down by Silver, but was then rescued by Starline. After Starline had made his introduction to the heroes, Metal Sonic attacked Sonic and Silver again until Silver telekinetically threw him across the mountain range. By the time Metal Sonic returned, Starline had managed to sent Sonic and Silver away. Confirming afterward that everything was set up, Metal Sonic left the scene through Starline's Warp Topaz portal.[18]

Reflections[]

StH2020 MetalSonic

Metal Sonic watches the Metal Virus slip off his finger, from Sonic the Hedgehog Annual 2020.

Metal Sonic walked around the halls of the Faceship alone. After watching a playback of his fight against Sonic and Silver, he walked on, clenching his fists in frustration. He soon arrived at Dr. Starline's lab and saw a vat of Metal Virus. He entered the room and stared at it before focusing on a recording of Sonic getting infected with the virus. The robot checked to make sure that the coast was clear and turned back to the vat of Metal Virus. He reached his hand out to the tub but paused. After a moment, Metal Sonic determinedly extended his hand out again and dipped his index finger in the vat of Metal Virus. He lifted it out and looked at the mixture on his finger. However, as the Metal Virus has no effect on things that are already mechanical, it slid off his finger and dropped back down into the vat. The robot stood still, stunned, and stared at his hand. He is soon alerted by the presence of Starline, who asked if his sensors were malfunctioning, seemingly having told him to get out of his office multiple times. Metal Sonic simply walked away, with Starline in disbelief that Eggman's greatest creation is "shambling around" the lab "like a Zombot."[19]

All or Nothing[]

StarlineMetal25

Starline's attempt to leave with the Warp Topaz is stopped by Metal Sonic, from Sonic the Hedgehog #25.

When Eggman saw that Starline had betrayed him by inviting the Deadly Six onboard the Faceship, he immediately sent Metal Sonic to attack the Zeti. Zavok swiftly used his electromagnetism to take control of Metal Sonic and taunted Eggman on how he forgot about their powers. After Starline failed to take control of the Zeti, Zavok decided to send Metal Sonic after him and Eggman; however, Starline managed to open a portal that he, Eggman and Metal Sonic fell through. When the trio landed on Angel Island, Metal Sonic quickly stood in front of Eggman to protect him from Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy, who were also present on the island. After Eggman explained his situation to Sonic, Espio appeared and told the group that they had just received word from Rouge. On the Rescue Shuttle, Metal Sonic glared at Gemerl. Later, when Starline decided to leave and try to figure out the Metal Virus situation on his own, Eggman had Metal Sonic grab him so that he could remove his Warp Topaz-equipped glove and then had the robot throw him out via a Warp Portal, but not before the doctor fired the platypus.[20]

Soon, Metal Sonic watched Eggman and Tails create the Multi-Portal Generator that would help take the others to fight the different members of the Deadly Six. Later, as Sonic was running on a treadmill, he showed his disappointment in him for choosing to return to Eggman even though he no longer had control over him. Eggman explained to the hedgehog that had programmed Metal Sonic with a demand for battle and conquest which means he would then desire to become dangerous again, no matter what Sonic did. After Eggman finished his talk with the hedgehog, Metal Sonic walked off with the doctor. The robot soon witnessed everyone else head off through the Warp Portals of the Multi-Portal Generator to face the Deadly Six.[21]

MetalSavesSonic

Metal Sonic rescues Sonic from a bunch of Zombots, from Sonic the Hedgehog #29.

As the others returned from their mission, Metal Sonic held back the Type-J Extreme Gear, which was carrying a Chaos Emerald as the Babylon Rogues did not return. Metal Sonic then witnessed the fall of the Faceship and Zavok's subsequent transformation into Giant Zavok. The Zeti then began his assault on Angel Island, throwing masses of Zombots and spitting fireballs at the island. With the group surrounded, Sonic asked Metal for his assistance which was backed up by an order from Eggman. Metal Sonic carried Sonic as the two made their way towards Zavok in a desperate attempt to retrieve the final Chaos Emerald. Metal Sonic activated his Black Shield to protect him and Sonic from Zavok's fireball, but as they got closer to emerald embedded in his chest, the Zeti blew out a puff of air and knocked the two to the ground, separating them in the process. Metal Sonic made his way back to Sonic, who was surrounded a group of Zombots and charged into them at high speed, freeing Sonic from the horde. With time running low, the two made one final attempt to get the Chaos Emerald, with Metal Sonic flying Sonic up Zavok's body. As the two made their way up, Zavok activated his electromagnetic abilities to throw Metal Sonic off, leaving Sonic alone. Metal Sonic is last seen getting up from the rubble and watching as Super Silver removes the Metal Virus from the infected with his psychokinesis.[22][23]

Out of the Blue[]

Metal Sonic was later commanded by Eggman to retrieve Orbot and Cubot from Gemerl after the duo had been discovered. The robot rushed to the duo's aid and impaled Gemerl with his hand. As he tried to fly away, Whisper started shooting at him with her Variable Wispon. The robot quickly used his Black Shield and dropped Gemerl in order to carry Orbot and Cubot. Metal Sonic flew the two robots to the Rescue Shuttle that Eggman had stolen in order to make his getaway. When Eggman detected that Shadow was on their tail, Eggman sent Metal Sonic to slow him down so that he could reach a secure escape altitude. Once the shuttle landed on a cliff, Metal Sonic flew to Shadow and hit him back down a cliff with an elbow. The two struggled with each other, prompting Shadow to deliver a strike with the fire from his Air Shoes. Metal Sonic was slightly burned by this but still charged at Shadow. The hedgehog did the same and hit the robot with a Spin Attack. Metal Sonic locked in on Shadow approaching him again and countered his Spin Attacks with his own Spin Attacks. Shadow attempted one more Spin Attack against Metal Sonic, only for the robot to charge up and use the Ring Spark Field to create a burst of energy and push Shadow back down. With his mission complete, Metal flew back to the shuttle and the ship took off.[24]

Imposter Syndrome[]

Sometime later, Metal Sonic was sent by Dr. Eggman to defend Eggperial City from an attack by Surge the Tenrec and Kitsunami the Fennec. Ambushing the former, Metal Sonic managed to maintain an advantage over Surge, but Kit soon began to support Surge with his water coils. Soon after, Metal Sonic was trapped in a water bubble by Kit, which Surge then electrocuted with her electricity-based powers. With Metal Sonic shut down from the shock, Surge knocked him down with a tap, claiming that he would never be able to become the real Sonic as she would be the one to replace him.[25]

Battle for the Empire[]

IDW50BelleandMetal

Metal Sonic being fixed by Belle, from Sonic the Hedgehog #50.

The deactivated Metal Sonic was soon after found in Eggperial City by Belle the Tinkerer, who resolved to repair him. He was subsequently brought to a discrete location by Belle so that he could be fixed in peace without being attacked by rogue Badniks now being controlled by Dr. Starline. During this, Belle used herself as a router that made Metal Sonic immune to Starline's control signal. When Belle then reactivated Metal Sonic, he immediately defended her against a hostile Motobug, as he recognized Belle as fellow Eggtech. Discovering that she could access Metal Sonic's files, Belle teamed up with him to find Dr. Eggman, whom Metal Sonic could locate using the Eggnet. After taking an elevator down underground, Metal Sonic and Belle found Eggman after he had just defeated Starline. There, Belle told Eggman that she had repaired Metal Sonic and was handing him back to the doctor, whom she intended to say goodbye to. Now by Eggman's side, Metal Sonic returned to Eggperial City's headquarters with the doctor.[26]

Upon hearing Sonic's taunts and remarks coming from the blue district, Metal Sonic began to head out with the intention of challenging his organic counterpart. Much to his chagrin, Eggman instead ordered him to leave Sonic to the Badnik Horde and track down Tails, Belle, and Kit, requesting Belle in particular to be kept intact. As the the trio began to escape in a shuttle they stole, Metal Sonic gave chase. After Belle pulled Sonic into the shuttle, Metal Sonic charged through the ship with a V. Maximum Overdrive Attack. This forced the ship to crash-land, not even halfway through the city.[27]

Overpowered[]

Looming over Sonic, Tails, and Belle, with the latter two supporting the former because of a leg injury, Metal Sonic prepared another V. Maximum Overdrive Attack, but missed the group despite Tails pausing to pull Kit from the wreckage. As they headed to an alleyway and plan their next move, Metal Sonic interrupted them by crashing through the wall. He ignored Belle's pleas to stop, only to have barrels and boxes rained down on him after Sonic kicked a platform with his good leg. As Metal Sonic freed himself and launched another attack, a now-refueled Kit used his hydrokinesis to pin Metal Sonic to the ground and bury him in debris. By the time he escaped it, the group was already near the outer walls. He yet another V. Maximum Overdrive Attack and charged directly at Sonic, but screeched to a halt when Belle stepped in between the two. Metal Sonic angrily slapped her aside to fight Sonic, but before he could, an explosion came from the side of Eggperial City's main tower. Sonic mocked him, telling him to run back to Eggman to make sure he was safe. Furious, Metal Sonic departed and sped off.[28]

Dr. Eggman repaired Metal Sonic after his fight and brought him along to track down Surge.[29] They arrived at Starline Base Sigma, where Sonic and Tails were already there looking for Surge and Kit. Without orders from Eggman, Metal attacked Sonic and the two got in a fight. Tails later came to Sonic's aid and Metal fought them both at the same time. After hearing Eggman cry out, Metal Sonic abandoned the fight and went to where Eggman was. Sure enough, Surge was about to finish off Eggman and Metal arrived just in time to stop her. Surge stopped Metal in his tracks, but Eggman kicked Surge off of him. Sonic and Tails then arrived at the scene and Surge fled. The two heroes and villains agree to a truce in order to stop Surge. While tracking her down, Eggman off-handily commands Metal not to help Sonic and Tails if Surge attacks only the heroes.[30]

Sonic, Tails, and Metal Sonic then get in an all-out fight against Surge and Kit. Metal was able to block a shot at Sonic by Surge. Sonic thanked Metal and told him to keep up the pressure. When Surge tried to attack Eggman, Metal Sonic came into to defend him, but it was a ruse by Surge to grab Metal. Metal Sonic then activated the Black Shield with Surge's arm still inside. Eggman gloated at Surge for underestimating his creation, but the tenrec utilized the Dynamo Cage to drain Metal Sonic of his power and causes him to deactivate. Eggman frantically worked to get Metal Sonic back online as the battle ragged on. Once it was over, he ordered Metal to retrieve the broken Dynamo Cage and Surge. As he went in to do it, Metal was wrapped up by water coils controlled by Kitsunami. Kit destroys the room everyone is in while escaping with Surge. Metal helps the doctor escape as the room collapses. They are buried under some rubble, but come out unharmed. Eggman orders Metal to call the Eggperial City, and they leave the Starline base to return to the Eggperial City.[31]

Urban Warfare[]

Metal Sonic returned with Dr. Eggman to Eggperial City and was with him in the central tower when the Diamond Cutters and Sonic infuriated the city.[32] He was put to use by Eggman when Tangle tried to escape him after he had captured Lanolin and Whisper in Spatial-Displacement Traps. Metal chased after Tangle after she fell out of the tower and sent a trap to capture her. Metal Sonic backed off when he couldn't find her, but she reappeared and Metal followed her from a distance. Tangle unknowingly led Metal right to Sonic and the other heroes. He sent a trap to capture one of them and engaged Sonic in battle. Silver managed to destroy the trap and he and Sonic were about to fight Metal, when Amy attacked Metal instead and buried him in rubble from the building they were on. Metal was able to get out of it and went back to the central tower, where Sonic, Amy, Tails, and Tangle were about to attack. He cut the cable to the elevator they were on and grabbed Sonic before Tails could fly him away. Tangle then wrapped her tail around Metal, blinding him and letting Sonic go.

Soon, Metal wound up in the control room with Eggman very upset at him. He managed to throw Tangle off him and started to fight Sonic again, but he wasn't able to hit him. After Eggman shot at Amy, Sonic got distracted and Metal threw a haymaker at him, knocking Sonic to the ground. However, Tails managed to turn off the limiters for the Giant Fake Chaos Emeralds, causing them to grow exponentially and nearly destroy the city. This forced Eggman to put the tower in mobile mode.[33] Metal Sonic stood by as Eggman trapped Sonic in a Spatial Trap. Eggman then commanded Metal to attack Amy and Tails. Tangle attempted to stop him, but Eggman grabbed her and held her at gunpoint. However, Tails also managed to turn off the city's computer, disabling the Spatial-Displacement Traps. Lanolin and Whisper soon appeared and Whisper send Eggman flying into Metal Sonic. Eggman ordered Metal to crush them before they escaped. Sonic came back before he could and he kicked Metal out of the tower. Metal Sonic wasn't finished yet and highjacked a Turtloid after the heroes escaped the tower. He used the Badnik to flyby and grab Sonic. He was then put under fire by Blaze and E-123 Omega. Sonic fought Metal and told him he needed to learn when to quit before kicking him into Omega's gun fire. He was directly hit and the city was destroyed shortly after, leaving his fate unknown.[34]

Sonic's 900th Adventure[]

Sonic suddenly appeared in a lab Metal Sonic was in with the Warp Topaz. Metal immediately took the gem and after Sonic pleaded for him to not take the Topaz, he smacked him aside and through a wall. Metal Sonic slowly attacked his counterpart, as Sonic appeared to be weak. This was a feign, however, and Sonic immediately rushed around him when Metal let his guard down. The Warp Topaz then had a surge of energy and Sonic took it from him just before it warped them somewhere else. They wound up in a desert where Sonic was previously with Knuckles. The energy of the Topaz destroyed one of Metal's hands and Sonic told him to go back to Eggman, taunting him by asking if he wanted to try to get the Topaz again. Metal left with his head held down.[35]
