Metal Robotnik (ブラックエッグマン Burakku Egguman?, lit. "Black Eggman") is an object that appears in Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie. It was a giant robotic mech version of Dr. Robotnik, created by the evil doctor. Robotnik claimed that Metal Robotnik was his own being and went rogue on him, conquering his peaceful hometown, Robotropolis. This was in an effort to lure Sonic to the Robot Generator so that Hyper Metal Sonic could be created. The doctor attempted to use Metal Robotnik to finish Sonic and Tails off beforehand, just for good measure.
Metal Robotnik is a giant red, gray, and black egg-shaped robot with red eyes and interchangeable arm attachments. It also has missile launchers built into its chest area and expandable wings and a jet-pack on its back.
Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie
Welcome to Robotropolis
Dr. Robotnik introduced Metal Robotnik as a rival of his that conquered Robotropolis with his demonic robots and sabotaged the city's Robot Generator, which generated power to the city. According to him, this would be set to cause a giant explosion the morning of the next day due to the excessive energy being produced. In reality however, this was a lie he made to lure Sonic into Robotropolis and copy his data to create Hyper Metal Sonic.
When Sonic and Tails approached the Ancient Relics, Robotnik, piloting Metal Robotnik, attacked them as soon as it sees them. It forced them off a bridge, where the duo tried to fool the doctor into thinking they were dead. However, Robotnik saw through this, fooling them into believing he fell for it, and surprised them as they tried to leave, where he started to pelt them with his glue weapon, sticking Tails to a nearby fence. Robotnik then fired some missiles at Sonic, but the hedgehog was able to grab and steer one of them back into the mech. Sonic, however, got stuck on the floor afterwards, which started to cave in and fill with water. Just as Metal Robotnik was about to shoot Sonic, Knuckles knocked the mech to the ground and freed Tails. During the battle with Knuckles, Metal Robotnik ran out of ammo, forcing Robotnik to pick Knuckles up and squeeze him. After Sonic was pulled out of the hole by Tails however, he sliced Metal Robotnik's arm off with a lethal attack and then impaled him twice as it tried to fly away. This caused it to explode and fall into the water far out of their view. Robotnik and Sara subsequently emerged from the vehicle, unharmed.
Sonic Vs. Metal Sonic!!
Later, Metal Robotnik came back one more time in nonfunctional form as Sonic, Tails and Knuckles reached Robotropolis. It appeared that Metal Robotnik came back as a ghost, until Robotnik's minions dropped him. It crumbled to the ground, making Robotnik emerge from inside it, revealing his true plan to get Sonic's data and put it in Hyper Metal Sonic.
Powers and abilities
Metal Robotnik was a highly powerful mech. It possessed great super strength, enough to easily destroy a bridge, and had rocket boosters and wings which granted it flight and let it move at speeds comparable to Sonic's.
Metal Robotnik came with a large assortment of armaments. Its fingers could convert into gatling guns and its arms had interchangeable attachments which including machine guns and pounding fists. Additionally, it could launch missiles from its waist area, powerful enough to level a small city area, and it could fire glue bombs from its rear.
Metal Robotnik was made of a tough polymer alloy armor, making it highly resilient to damage. In fact, Sonic was unable to even dent its armor with blunt attacks and it could take a direct hit from one of its own missiles and still function.

Books and comics
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Metal Robotnik appeared during the time Mobius Prime's history was altered by Chaos Knuckles. In this media, it was a manually controlled robot made by Robotnik to help in the capture of Princess Sara, but interference arrived in the form of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles after he captured the princess. After Metal Robotnik attacked Sonic and Tails, Knuckles flew in to their rescue, but somehow, duplicates of Metal Robotnik appeared to challenge them.
