Metal Overlord is the second boss in Shadow Generations. Here, Shadow fights Metal Overlord, who made his debut in Sonic Heroes, in the ocean.[1] Throughout the entirety of the battle, Shadow uses the Doom Surf to attack Metal Overlord with the debris in the water.
In order to gain access to Metal Overlord's boss fight, the player must complete the Challenge Acts of Kingdom Valley and Sunset Heights to obtain their respective Boss Gate Keys. After beating the game, the player gains access to a harder version of this boss fight with a slightly different arrangement of obstacles.
Boss guide[]
The overall fight against Metal Overlord is set in the ruins of the Final Fortress in the ocean. The entire battle sees Shadow use the Doom Surf ability, since there is no solid ground here. The player must hurl debris at Metal Overlord to damage him. Chaos Control is mostly inefficient in this boss fight, as Metal Overlord is unaffected by the ability.
Phase 1[]
In the first phase of the battle, Shadow chases Metal Overlord through the water, while avoiding laser fences and missiles. Sometimes, the player will get the chance to perform tricks off Trick Jump Panels and fly through Rainbow Rings, occasionally giving them an opportunity to strike at Metal Overlord's core directly for more damage.
At one point, Metal Overlord will attempt to swipe at Shadow from behind with his electrified tail, requiring precise jumps to avoid taking damage.
At another, the robot will launch missiles at Shadow that are either red or gray; the gray ones can be hurled back at Metal Overlord to damage him, while the red ones can only be repelled with Chaos Control in effect, and will damage Shadow if he simply touches it. During the missile section, the player can find a sphere of green light which can be used for Chaos Dash, launching Shadow airborne and in-range to instantly strike at Metal Overlord.
If the player takes too long in Phase 1 Metal Overlord will start to attract near by rubble to heal himself, while healing himself the player can homing attack the floating rubble to attack and prevent Metal Overlord from healing.
Phase 2[]
When Metal Overlord's Health Gauge is down to 50%, the second phase begins. The battle transitions from 3D to 2.5D, being the only time in the entire game where this happens, as well as the only boss with a 2D segment. Now, Metal Overlord flies above a whirlpool, and Shadow must continue launching debris at him while dodging homing missiles. Shadow can counter by firing back gray missiles and Crystal Attacks that Metal Overlord throws at him. Eventually, Metal Overlord dives underwater and reemerges with an Mako gunship, which Shadow must destroy with a Doom Spear. The player can then use Chaos Control to fire the debris back to the boss. This process repeats until the player completely drains Metal Overlord's Health Gauge.
At the end of the fight, the player must perform a Real-Time Interaction for Shadow to deliver a final kick to the core, destroying Metal Overlord.
Hard Mode Differences[]
Changes in hard mode include the following:
- Extra laser walls that Shadow must use Chaos spear on to deactivate them.
- Metal Overlord launches more red missiles than normal, but they can still be repelled with the use of Chaos control (Metal Overlord remains unaffected during Chaos control's duration).
- Metal Overlord knocks back the crystal one more time during Phase 2.
- Metal Overlord throws a tank at Shadow, which requires more than one hit to destroy and has falling debris that Shadow can knock back.
Checkpoints[]
There are three checkpoints throughout this whole battle. During Phase 1 there are two checkpoints which appear as Star Posts, located around the end of the missile sections. The other checkpoint is at the start of Phase 2.
Quotes[]
- "Trying to use Chaos Control? Ha! That power already belongs to me!"
- —Metal Overlord when Shadow uses Chaos Control.
- "I am the king of all creation! Nobody can defeat me! Not you! Not Sonic! Not anyone!"
- —Metal Overlord when he is about to throw the first oil tanker.
- "As if I could be challenged by an imposter like you!"
- —Metal Overlord when he is about to throw the second oil tanker.
Trivia[]
- In Sonic Heroes, the boss fight originally took place in the sky, whereas in Shadow Generations, the fight mostly takes place in the water, at the flooded ruins of Final Fortress.
- Metal Overlord's roar is reused from Sonic Adventure 2's Biolizard during Phase 2.
- One of Metal Overlord’s roar also uses the roar of the famous Kaiju Godzilla from the original 1954 Godzilla movie but however it can only barley be heard briefly and is mixed with the Biolizard's roar.
- This is the only boss battle in Shadow Generations that contains physical checkpoints.
- In addition, this is the only stage in the whole franchise in which the Star Posts can be used over and over again. When the player goes through the second lap during Phase 1, the turquoise light between the red posts will appear again, though position of post rods remain vertical and their lamps remain yellow.
- Shadow defeating Metal Overlord with a kick before exploding is similar to what Classic Sonic did to Metal Sonic in Sonic Generations, although this time with a kick to the damage core instead of his face.
- Metal Overlord is the only boss in Shadow Generations that Shadow does not directly fight in their original game, rather, Shadow fought his incomplete form Metal Madness alongside Rouge and Omega, while a Super Team Sonic fought against Metal Overlord.
- This boss makes Metal Sonic the only character to appear as a boss in all three Generations titles.
